Wed Apr 1722:02Daulton Varsho's Two Homers Not Enough In Loss
Toronto Blue Jays outfielder Daulton Varsho belted two home runs in Wednesday's game versus the division-rival New York Yankees, but it wasn't enough as his team fell 6-4. Varsho's first homer was a two-run shot that went 373 feet to right center field to score Davis Schneider in the second inning, and his second blast traveled 392 feet to give the Jays a temporary 3-1 lead during the seventh frame. The 27-year-old converted catcher had a strong spring training, and he's offering plenty of power with four round-trippers and eight RBI in 55 at-bats to begin the 2024 season. Even so, he's only batting .218 across 19 outings and will likely need to pick it up in the speed department (one stolen base) to overcome hitting in the lower part of Toronto's order. Varsho has a three-game series against the San Diego Padres starting on Friday, and in 21 games against San Diego since 2022, Varsho is batting just .147 with three bombs.

Mon Apr 816:35Daulton Varsho Riding Pine On Monday
Toronto Blue Jays outfielder Daulton Varsho is not in the team's starting lineup on Monday against the visiting Seattle Mariners. With Varsho on the bench in the series opener, Davis Schneider is getting the start in left field and is batting in the five-hole for the Blue Jays against Mariners right-hander Luis Castillo. Schneider has never faced Castillo in his career in what will be a difficult matchup for the infielder/outfielder. The 27-year-old Varsho's fantasy stock has been falling since his disappointing first year in Toronto in 2023, and losing catcher eligibility hasn't helped his cause at all. Through the first 10 contests of 2024, he's gone 4-for-30 (.133) with no home runs or RBI, four runs scored and eight strikeouts in 34 plate appearances.

Mon Mar 2518:32Daulton Varsho Scratched On Monday
Toronto Blue Jays outfielder Daulton Varsho was scratched from Monday's Grapefruit League lineup against the Pittsburgh Pirates to allow him to attend to a personal matter. Varsho wasn't around to close out the spring schedule, but he's expected to be back in the lineup for Opening Day on Thursday against the Tampa Bay Rays. The 27-year-old disappointed in his first year in Toronto in 2023, slashing .220/.285/.389 with 20 home runs, 61 RBI, 16 stolen bases and 65 runs scored in 581 plate appearances over 158 games played. He will at least be a regular in left field for the Jays in 2024 against right-handed pitching, which gives him depth value in mixed fantasy leagues in a strong lineup and hitter-friendly home park. The biggest negative for Varsho this year is that he'll no longer have catcher eligibility.

Fri Mar 801:09Daulton Varsho Drawing More Walks This Spring
Toronto Blue Jays left fielder Daulton Varsho went 3-for-3 with three RBI in his first game this Spring Training back on February 24. However, his output has dwindled since then as he's 0-for-10 over his last five games. On a positive note, he does have four walks, one stolen base, and just one strikeout during that span. We can't put a whole lot of stock into Spring Training performances, but it's still promising to see Varsho drawing walks at an 11.8 percent clip after turning in a career-worst 7.7 percent rate last season. He's started 150-plus games in each of the last two years and should remain an everyday player for the Jays in 2024.

Sat Sep 30 202321:26Daulton Varsho's Three RBI Not Enough In Key Loss
Toronto Blue Jays catcher/outfielder Daulton Varsho went 2-for-4 with a home run and three RBI in Saturday's 7-5 loss to the Tampa Bay Rays. While it's damaging loss for Toronto's wild card hopes, Varsho did his part with the bat. He smacked a third-inning solo jack to get his club on the board before plating two more runs on a go-ahead single during the fourth frame. Varsho is carrying a hot stick lately, hitting .262 with four homers, two triples, and nine RBI in 42 at-bats since Sep. 15. The hybrid backstop's first year with the Jays following an offseason trade was fairly ordinary, slashing .220/.286/.391 with 20 big flies, 68 RBI, and 16 stolen bases over 522 at-bats ahead of free agency. Varsho ranks outside the top 10 catchers in 2023, but he'll remain fantasy relevant if he retains that eligibility next year.

Wed Sep 6 202314:09Daulton Varsho Re-Enters Starting Lineup Wednesday
Toronto Blue Jays outfielder Daulton Varsho is back in the starting lineup Wednesday when his club takes on the Oakland A's and left-hander JP Sears. The lefty-swinging Varsho sat against another lefty in the A's Ken Waldichuk on Tuesday but will return to take on Sears on Wednesday afternoon. It's largely been a disappointing season for a player that entered 2023 with high expectations as Varsho is hitting just .220 with a .662 OPS across 137 games, production that's helped lead to an underwhelming 82 wRC+. While his 16 home runs and 15 stolen bases are palatable from a fantasy standpoint, he slugged 27 HR and collected 16 SB in his age-25 season last year and has failed to take the step forward fantasy managers were looking for this time around.

Tue Jul 25 202321:20Daulton Varsho On The Pine Tuesday
Toronto Blue Jays outfielder Daulton Varsho is starting Tuesday's game against left-hander Julio Urias and the Los Angeles Dodgers on the bench. The 27-year-old is in the midst of a down year, slashing .215/.275/.358 with 12 bombs, 40 runs, and 34 RBI over 100 games, but he still has 12 steals under his belt. Santiago Espinal will take his spot in the lineup, playing second base and batting seventh. The 2022 All-Star hasn't offered much with the bat this year, batting .231 with a single homer and a pair of stolen bases across 53 games. Fantasy managers should look elsewhere for offensive help.

Thu Jun 8 202316:12Daulton Varsho Getting A Breather Thursday
Toronto Blue Jays catcher/outfielder Daulton Varsho is taking the day off on Thursday against the Houston Astros with left-hander Framber Valdez on the mound. Varsho snapped a 10-game hitting streak on Wednesday, but he's gone 7-for-23 (.304) with three home runs and four RBI in seven games since the calendar flipped to June. The 26-year-old has actually hit for a better average against southpaws (.250) than against righties (.216) this year, but he's yet to go deep against a lefty. Overall, he's hitting just .222 (51-for-230) in his first year in Toronto with 11 home runs, 26 RBI and eight stolen bases for fantasy managers. Whit Merrifield is starting in left field and hitting seventh on Thursday, while Santiago Espinal is at the keystone and batting eighth against Valdez.

Tue May 23 202303:08Daulton Varsho Ends RBI-Less Drought With Four-Bagger
Toronto Blue Jays outfielder Daulton Varsho went 1-for-4 with a solo homer in a 6-4 loss to the Tampa Bay Rays on Monday. He was relegated to the seventh spot in the Jays order for his last start. The 26-year-old went 36 at-bats since May 13 without tallying a single RBI before Monday's ninth-inning blast to help make the bout more interesting. Varsho accumulated nine RBI from May 2 to May 7, so fantasy managers hope this recent dry spell is in the rearview mirror. The speedy fielder is still hitting a subpar .207 with a .652 OPS. Varsho's six stolen bases, however, keep him within striking distance of returning to the conversation of top-10 fantasy catchers where eligible.

Sun Apr 16 202312:43Daulton Varsho Taking A Day Off
Toronto Blue Jays catcher/outfielder Daulton Varsho is not in the starting lineup on Sunday against the Tampa Bay Rays. It will be Varsho's first day off of the season in his first year with the Blue Jays. The 26-year-old has so far hit .264 (14-for-53) with three doubles, one home run, four RBI, three stolen bases and 10 runs scored in 63 plate appearances and 15 games for Toronto and fantasy managers. He's extremely valuable in fantasy because of his power/speed combination with catcher eligibility. Jordan Luplow is in right field and is hitting eighth on Sunday, while Whit Merrifield gets the start in left field and hits sixth against Rays left-hander Shane McClanahan in the series finale.

Fri Apr 7 202318:37Daulton Varsho To Rest On Friday
Toronto Blue Jays catcher/outfielder Daulton Varsho (rest) is out of the starting lineup for Friday's game against the Los Angeles Angels. It's a well deserved day off for Varsho who has played in the first seven games to begin the season. Recently recalled Jordan Luplow will serve as the designated hitter and bat eighth against left-hander Patrick Sandoval. Fantasy managers should adjust their lineups accordingly with Varsho sitting out on Friday.

Fri Jan 13 202316:01Daulton Varsho To Make $3.05 Million In Toronto
The Toronto Blue Jays and catcher/outfielder Daulton Varsho avoided salary arbitration by agreeing to a one-year, $3.05 million deal on Friday. The Blue Jays upgraded their outfield depth and added a much-needed left-handed bat to their potent lineup when they acquired Varsho from the Arizona Diamondbacks this offseason. In just his third big-league season in 2022 with the D-backs, he hit .235/.302/.443 with a .745 OPS, career-high 27 home runs, 74 RBI, 79 runs scored and 16 stolen bases in 592 plate appearances and 151 games played. The 26-year-old provides defensive versatility at catcher and in left field, but he's expected to be Toronto's regular left fielder in 2023. The power-speed combination and the move to one of the better lineups in baseball have skyrocketed Varsho's fantasy value heading into next season.

Fri Dec 23 202217:10Blue Jays Acquire Daulton Varsho From D-Backs
The Toronto Blue Jays acquired catcher/outfielder Daulton Varsho from the Arizona Diamondbacks on Friday in exchange for catching prospect Gabriel Moreno and outfielder Lourdes Gurriel Jr., according to sources. The 26-year-old Varsho should see significant time in the outfield with the move to Toronto, and the move to the American League East and a very hitter-friendly ballpark in a potent offense will all add to Varsho's fantasy appeal heading into next season. He hit .235/.302/.443 with 27 home runs, 74 RBI, 79 runs scored and 16 stolen bases in 531 at-bats in his first full big-league season in Arizona in 2022. He will still have catcher eligibility in 2022, but he'll likely lose it going into 2024. Still, Varsho's power/speed combination in Toronto's dangerous lineup looks extremely appealing in fantasy moving forward.

Mon Aug 15 202211:10Ketel Marte, Daulton Varsho Injured Sunday
Arizona Diamondbacks infielder Ketel Marte (hamstring) and outfielder/catcher Daulton Varsho (jaw) both left Sunday's game against the Colorado Rockies early due to injuries. Marte exited with left hamstring tightness after running the bases in the ninth inning. Manager Torey Lovullo said the team is hoping it's nothing serious and that Marte will return to the starting lineup soon. Varsho was hit in the jaw by a baseball that was tossed to him as the outfielders were running into the dugout between innings. Lovullo said Varsho could have continued playing but he was removed as a precautionary measure. It sounds like both players should be available for fantasy managers soon, but it remains to be seen if they'll be available for the doubleheader against the San Francisco Giants on Monday.

Sat Jul 23 202209:38Daulton Varsho Stays Hot Friday With Three Hits
Arizona Diamondbacks catcher/outfielder Daulton Varsho had a big day at the dish on Friday, going 3-for-4 with a home run and three runs scored. Over his last 15 games, the 26-year-old has posted a .908 OPS with three home runs. The hot stretch has brought Varsho's sash line to .239/.305/.423, and he's added 13 HRs, 42 runs, 46 RBI, and five stolen bases. He hasn't produced as much value as fantasy managers had hoped, especially in the stolen base department, but he remains one of the better catcher options in all formats.

Arizona Diamondbacks catcher Daulton Varsho went without a hit in the 10-4 loss to the San Diego Padres on Wednesday. He was 0-for-5 with a pair of punch-outs. Varsho's now hitting .237 with nine home runs, 32 runs, 28 RBI, and four stolen bases across 64 games. After a strong start to the season, the 25-year-old has done almost nothing since the end of May. Over his last 30 games, Varsho's slashing .229/.276/.356 with three home runs and one stolen base. He's startable in two catcher leagues, but fantasy managers in shallower formats can bench him until he turns things around.

Wed Jun 8 202216:02Daulton Varsho Getting The Day Off On Wednesday
Arizona Diamondbacks catcher Daulton Varsho is absent from the starting lineup for Wednesday's game against left-hander Mike Minor and the Cincinnati Reds. Jose Herrera will be serving as the team's catcher for the game while outfielder Cooper Hummel will be in Varsho's usual leadoff spot. Varsho has been ice cold at the plate over the last few weeks. He's tallied just three hits over his last 28 at-bats dating back to May 27. The 25-year-old is slashing .243/.316/.427 with eight home runs, three stolen bases, 24 RBI and 27 runs over 53 games on the year. He remains a must-start catcher in all formats despite this recent slump.

Sat Jun 4 202212:21Daulton Varsho Sitting, Jordan Luplow Returns
Arizona Diamondbacks catcher Daulton Varsho is out of the starting lineup on Saturday against the Pittsburgh Pirates, while outfielder Jordan Luplow (foot) will return. Varsho is hitting a respectable .249/.325/.445 with eight home runs, 22 RBI, 27 runs scored and three stolen bases on the year, but he's gone 1-for-14 with four strikeouts in his last four games and could use a day off. Jose Herrera is doing the catching and is batting ninth on Saturday against Pirates right-hander Roansy Contreras. Luplow fouled a ball off his left foot on May 27 and pinch hit on Tuesday, but he's back in the lineup as the designated hitter and will bat sixth. Luplow does have six home runs in 65 at-bats, but he's also hitting .169.

Arizona Diamondbacks catcher Daulton Varsho (shoulder) was a late scratch for Saturday's game against the Los Angeles Dodgers due to shoulder soreness. He was initially in Saturday's lineup but was a late scratch. The 25-year-old left the game early on Friday with right shoulder soreness and remains day-to-day.
