Tue Mar 2619:16Orioles Sign Tony Kemp
The Baltimore Orioles signed infielder/outfielder Tony Kemp to an undisclosed major-league contract on Tuesday and designated third baseman Nick Maton for assignment in a corresponding move. Kemp was in spring training with the Cincinnati Reds but opted out of his minor-league deal and is now headed back to the American League after slashing just .209/.303/.304 with five home runs, 27 RBI and a career-high 15 stolen bases in 124 games with the Oakland Athletics in 2023. In addition to being able to play the outfield, the 32-year-old left-handed-hitting veteran can also fill in at second base for the Orioles. At best, Kemp is going to fill a reserve role for the O's in 2024 and isn't much of a fantasy asset. The former fifth-round pick of the Houston Astros in 2013 out of Vanderbilt is a career .238/.325/.352 hitter with only 35 homers in eight big-league seasons.

Fri Feb 2317:06Tony Kemp Joins Reds On Minors Deal
Free-agent outfielder Tony Kemp signed a minor-league deal with an invitation to major-league spring training on Friday with the Cincinnati Reds. Kemp will come to camp hoping to win a roster spot as a utility player for a Reds team that is already stacked with position players. The 32-year-old veteran left-handed hitter has hit .240/.330/.345 with 20 home runs, 114 RBI, 37 stolen bases and 172 runs scored for the Oakland Athletics the last two seasons. He's fallen off the last couple of seasons at the plate, though, and batted .209 (75-for-359) with five homers, 27 RBI, a career-high 15 stolen bases and 42 runs scored in 419 plate appearances and 124 games in 2023. Kemp will be facing an uphill battle to make the Opening Day roster for Cincy.

Mon Feb 519:45Tony Kemp Drawing Plenty Of Interest
Free-agent second baseman/left fielder Tony Kemp has drawn interest from the Toronto Blue Jays, New York Yankees, Boston Red Sox, Pittsburgh Pirates and Cincinnati Reds this offseason, according to sources. The 32-year-old veteran hit .238/.325/.352 with a .677 OPS, 35 home runs and 184 RBI in eight big-league seasons over 734 games. He's one of only five players with at least 2,000 plate appearances since 2016 with zero days spent on the injured list, joining Vladimir Guerrero Jr., Paul Goldschmidt, Nathaniel Lowe and Whit Merrifield. Kemp's durability is a great selling point for him as a free agent, although he hit just .209/.303/.304 with five home runs, 27 RBI and a career-high 15 stolen bases in 124 games with the Oakland Athletics in 2023.

Sat Sep 23 202313:48Tony Kemp Is Not In The Lineup On Saturday Against The Tigers
Oakland Athletics outfielder Tony Kemp (ankle) is not in the starting lineup on Saturday against the Detroit Tigers. The veteran outfielder sprained his right ankle during Friday's contest so he's likely dealing with some soreness on Saturday. Rookie Lawrence Butler is getting the start in center field and Esteury Ruiz is taking over in left while Kemp gets this one off. Ruiz is a cheap speed option in DFS and is worth getting in your lineups whenever he's starting.

Sat Sep 23 202310:58Tony Kemp Suffers Ankle Sprain On Slide Friday
Oakland Athletics outfielder Tony Kemp (ankle) was forced from Friday's 8-2 win over the Detroit Tigers after sustaining a right ankle sprain. The 31-year-old suffered the setback after sliding into second base during the sixth inning and had to come out of the contest, but not before coming around to score on a three-run Shea Langeliers homer. Esteury Ruiz entered for him during the seventh inning, singling in two runs and swiping two bags during the ensuing frame. A's skipper Mark Kotsay hopes Kemp can return this season, but they could simply keep the veteran out of play for the end of a lost season. The on-base merchant is slashing .209/.304/.304 with five home runs, 27 RBI, and 15 stolen bases in 418 trips to the plate. The speedy Ruiz is batting .318 (14-for-44) with 12 steals since Aug. 30, so he should be worth rostering in shallow leagues for those categories to finish things up in 2023.

Fri Aug 25 202312:53Tony Kemp Hits Fourth Home Run Of The Year
Oakland Athletics outfielder Tony Kemp did something in Thursday night's 8-5 win over the Chicago White Sox that he normally doesn't do, hit a home run. Kemp finished the game 2-for-4 with a home run a double, RBI and two runs scored. Outside of his 12 stolen bases this year, fantasy managers haven't gotten much out of the 31-year-old, as he's hitting just .217/.305/.321 with four homers, 13 doubles, three triples, 24 RBI and 36 runs scored in 347 plate appearances and 100 games in his fourth year in Oakland. He's been a bit better in the month of August, though, going 7-for-28 (.250) with a homer, three doubles, three RBI and three runs scored in 14 games (eight starts). Kemp can continue being ignored in mixed fantasy leagues.

Fri Aug 11 202320:09Tony Kemp Goes On Paternity List
The Oakland Athletics placed outfielder Tony Kemp on the paternity list on Friday and recalled rookie outfielder Lawrence Butler from Triple-A Las Vegas in a corresponding move. Kemp will most likely miss the entire weekend series against the Washington Nationals on the road. The 31-year-old has only been useful in deeper leagues for his speed (12 stolen bases) on a bad A's team this year. In his 284 at-bats, he's hitting only .211 (60-for-284) with just three home runs, 11 doubles, three triples, 22 RBI and 34 runs scored in 93 games. Butler, who is a top-five prospect for the A's per MLB Pipeline, is a much more attractive fantasy piece for his power/speed combination for the remainder of the season.

Thu Sep 8 202218:16Tony Kemp Back In Action Thursday
Oakland Athletics second baseman Tony Kemp (groin) is starting at second base and is hitting leadoff on Thursday against the Chicago White Sox and right-hander Dylan Cease. Kemp returns to the starting lineup after sitting out Wednesday with groin tightness. Fantasy managers in deeper leagues should shuffle the 30-year-old back into their starting lineups as he looks to move his current hitting streak to 10 games. He's gone 11-for-37 (.297) with no homers, six RBI and seven runs scored during his nine-game hitting streak. Overall, Kemp is hitting .227/.300/.309 with four home runs, 34 RBI, 45 runs scored and eight stolen bases in 471 plate appearances and 124 games.

Wed May 4 202214:57Tony Kemp In Wednesday's Starting Lineup
Oakland Athletics second baseman Tony Kemp is back in the lineup on Wednesday. Kemp got the day off on Tuesday but will hit leadoff against the Tampa Bay Rays and right-hander Corey Kluber. So far this season, Kemp is batting .234 with a .318 on-base percentage and two stolen bases in 88 plate appearances. Fantasy managers looking for streaming help at second base are probably better off looking elsewhere. Third baseman Sheldon Neuse and designated hitter Jed Lowrie round out the top third of Oakland's batting order.

Tue May 3 202218:39Tony Kemp Sitting Against Lefty On Tuesday
Oakland Athletics second baseman Tony Kemp is not in the starting lineup for Tuesday's game against left-hander Ryan Yarbrough and the Tampa Bay Rays. Chad Pinder will be leading off for the game with Sheldon Neuse covering the keystone. Kemp has been the team's primary leadoff hitter this year. Over 22 games, he's slashing .234/.318/.260 with two stolen bases and nine runs scored. He has a strikeout rate of just 12.5%, which ranks in the 91st percentile. Expect to see him back in the lineup against right-hander Corey Kluber on Wednesday.

Thu Sep 30 202112:14Tony Kemp Homers In Loss At Seattle On Wednesday
Oakland Athletics second baseman Tony Kemp went 1-for-4 with a solo home run in a loss to the Mariners on Wednesday. The homer was Kemp's seventh of the season, but the light-hitting infielder is still slashing under .400 as he's not known as a power threat. He does have seven steals and a 1:1 strikeout-to-walk ratio, but Kemp isn't much of a fantasy asset with one series left on the schedule for the now eliminated A's. He'll wrap up the season with a three-game set in Houston as nothing more than a punt-play in DFS if he's hitting near the top of the lineup.

Mon Sep 20 202120:25Tony Kemp Absent From Monday's Lineup
Oakland Athletics second baseman/outfielder Tony Kemp is starting Monday's game on the bench against the Seattle Mariners. Kemp is slashing .264/.378/.397 with six home runs and six stolen bases over 118 games. Chad Pinder will replace Kemp in the lineup, playing right field and batting seventh. Pinder has been receiving decent playing time as of late, starting four of the last six games, and is batting .276 with a .794 OPS against lefties this season. With southpaw Tyler Anderson on the mound for the Mariners, Pinder is a good streaming option in many leagues.

Thu Sep 16 202111:43Tony Kemp Stuffs The Stat Sheet Versus Royals
Oakland Athletics second baseman/outfielder Tony Kemp went 2-for-5 with two runs scored, an RBI, and a stolen base in a win over the Royals on Wednesday. Kemp has been a solid player for the A's with a .269/.374/.406 slash line, but he has less value in fantasy as he's been splitting time between second base and left field. Oakland seems to be rotating Kemp, Chad Pinder, and Jed Lowrie with two members of the trio starting on a given day with the third on the bench. Kemp has some value in very deep leagues, but most fantasy managers can disregard the speedy utility man.

Mon Aug 30 202108:34Tony Kemp Hits Big Home Run In Victory
Oakland Athletics second baseman/outfielder Tony Kemp pinch-hit in Sunday's victory versus the New York Yankees and went 1-for-2 with a game winning two-run home run off of Chad Green in the bottom of the eighth inning. Kemp has been playing a nice role for the Athletics this season and is hitting .263 with five home runs, 24 RBI and five stolen bases on the season. Kemp has seen an uptick in playing time with outfielder Seth Brown (COVID-19) going on the COVID-19 injured list earlier in the week. Kemp has been swinging a hot bat of late, but just doesn't get in the lineup enough to make an impact in most formats. He's best suited left on the waiver wire.

Sat Aug 28 202110:44Tony Kemp Collects Two Hits In Loss To Yankees
Oakland Athletics outfielder Tony Kemp went 2-for-3 as the leadoff hitter in a loss to the Yankees on Friday. Kemp did a good job setting the table for the Oakland offense, but the hitters behind him could get little done facing Yankee ace Gerrit Cole. Kemp has seen more playing time lately as his versatility gets him on the field at several positions, but he's still not much of a fantasy option. Kemp is batting .252 with a strong .369 on-base percentage, but that comes with almost no power as he's slugging under .400 with just four homers. Kemp is best left on waivers in most fantasy formats.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Yan Gomes hit a game-ending single in the ninth inning, Erick Fedde extended his scoreless streak to 20 innings and the Washington Nationals two-hit the first-place New York Mets in a 1-0 victory Friday night. Juan Soto opened the ninth with a walk and moved to third on Ryan Zimmerman’s single to right. Gomes then singled to left to beat Edwin Díaz (1-2). Brad Hand (4-2) pitched the ninth to close out Washington’s gem. The Nationals have won a season-high five straight. Fedde pitched seven dominant innings, allowing two hits and four walks while striking out six. The right-hander’s scoreless streak is the longest on the team this season. Fedde’s ERA is down to 3.33.
