The Phillies assigned McGuiness to minor league camp on Sunday, CSN Philadelphia reports.

McGuiness was 4-for-16 this spring. He could see time with the Phillies later this season if the team can trade Ryan Howard at some point.

McGuiness signed a minor league contract with the Phillies on Monday, Stephen Gross of the Morning Call reports.

McGuiness spent 2014 at Triple-A Indianapolis, batting .264/.358/.412 with 54 RBI and nine home runs, also taking 63 walks. He faces an uphill battle to make the Phillies' roster out of spring training, but a strong spring training could give him a slim chance.

The Pirates talked up McGuinness early on in camp, but he wound up batting just .240/.296/.320 with no homers during Grapefruit League play. With Andrew Lambo also struggling at first base, any talk of Gaby Sanchez possibly platooning should now go out the window.

Tom Singer of MLB.com writes that "the Pirates' early impression of Chris McGuiness is far too good for them to make a quick move for anyone else."

The potential "move" Singer is referring to is related to a report Sunday from Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe that the Pirates are scouting Red Sox outfielder/first baseman Mike Carp. Andrew Lambo has also reportedly looked good in his work at first base. Carp actually hit a two-run homer versus the Pirates Monday, but perhaps the Pirates will stay in-house as they seek a platoon partner for Gaby Sanchez at first.

Pirates acquired 1B Chris McGuiness from the Rangers for RHP Miles Mikolas.

McGuiness was designated for assignment by Texas last week to open up a 40-man roster spot for new outfielder Shin-Soo Choo. The 25-year-old hit fairly well at Triple-A in 2013 and could see action at first base next season in Pittsburgh. It has been a position of need all winter for the Bucs, who currently project to start Gaby Sanchez there with Travis Ishikawa and Andrew Lambo backing him up.

The move clears a spot for the newly-signed Shin-Soo Choo on the 40-man roster. McGuiness, 25, appeared in 10 games with the Rangers this past season and hit .246/.369/.423 with 11 home runs and 63 RBI over 104 games in Triple-A.

McGuiness had six hits and 13 strikeouts in 34 plate appearances with the Rangers for a .176/.176/.206 batting line. He may get another shot later this summer.

Rangers manager Ron Washington said Chris McGuiness will see the majority of the playing time at first base while Mitch Moreland (hamstring) is on the disabled list.

"McGuiness is going to get the majority of the time, the same time Moreland was getting," Washington said. "I'll pick and choose with him on lefties." The left-handed swinging McGuinness will start against righties, while Jeff Baker and possibly Lance Berkman figure to spell him against southpaws. The 25-year-old is worth adding in AL-only leagues.

McGuiness was taken by the Indians in last December's Rule 5 Draft but failed to crack Cleveland's Opening Day roster this spring and was returned to the Rangers in late March. The 25-year-old should see semi-regular playing time at first base while Mitch Moreland (hamstring) is sidelined. McGuiness was batting .275/.382/.477 with six homers and 34 RBI in 55 games at the Triple-A level.

The Indians will keep $25,000 -- or, half of $50,000 it took to draft him in December. McGuiness, 24, batted .268/.366/.474 with 23 homers at the Double-A level last season. The Rangers are surely glad to have him back.

MLB.com's Jordan Bastian reports that Rule 5 pick Chris McGuiness will not make the Indians' Opening Day roster, but the club would like to work out a trade with the Rangers in order to keep him.

McGuiness is batting just .195/.267/.244 for the Tribe this spring, but obviously they see something they like in the 24-year-old. He batted .268/.366/.474 with 23 homers at the Double-A level last season.

Chris McGuiness was named as the Arizona Fall League's 2012 MVP on Saturday after hitting .288 with four homers and a league-high 27 RBI.

The Rangers first baseman, acquired in the 2010 deal for Jarrod Saltalamacchia, also played exceptional defense throughout the fall league. The 24-year-old McGuiness hit .268/.366/.474 with 23 homers and 77 RBI for Double-A Frisco in 2012.

This trade appeared to be more of Texas losing faith in Saltalamacchia than getting knocked over by an offer. McGuiness, 22, hit .298 with 12 homers and 46 RBI in 282 at-bats for Class-A Greenville. He was a 13th-round pick in the 2009 draft.
