LOS ANGELES (AP) — The Los Angeles Lakers received their NBA championship rings Tuesday night in an empty arena that still felt filled with warmth from their families, friends and millions of fans worldwide. And while they put the blindingly brilliant jewelry on their fingers, the Lakers promised to hold a real party for their 17th championship as soon as everyone can attend. “I’m going to take a second to speak directly to Lakers fans: We miss you so much,” Lakers owner Jeanie Buss said. “The team misses you, but someday soon, we’ll be together. And when we are together, we have something special to celebrate.” Just 72 days after LeBron James, Anthony Davis and their teammates finished off the Miami Heat in the NBA bubble, the Lakers returned from the shortest offseason in league history to get their reward. The coaches, executives and 11 returning players from last season’s championship team received their rings at Staples Center in a brief, warm ceremony before their regular season opener... [More]

Tue May 22 201821:49Celtics hope return home can slow LeBron, Cavs in Game 5
BOSTON (AP) — The Celtics expected to see a different LeBron James in Cleveland after the Cavaliers fell into a 2-0 hole to open the Eastern Conference finals. Two games and back-to-back wins later , James has reminded everyone exactly why he's been to seven straight NBA Finals.Boston will be back in the embrace of its raucous fans at TD Garden for Game 5 on Wednesday. But a team that has thrived on youth this postseason suddenly looks disoriented without a go-to player and opposite a more veteran squad that has found a new attitude thanks to the fuel being provided by its biggest star.Celtics coach Brad Stevens said all you can do against James is "make it as hard as you can.""LeBron is the best player of this generation and he's just maintained that because of his commitment to improvement," Stevens said. "He's always been an unbelievable physical player. He's always been a savvy player. And he's always had, just like the natural instincts to make the right basketball play along with his... [More]

"It's not about me. Wed May 16 201815:17Celtics' Marcus Smart has been unflappable against Cavaliers
BOSTON (AP) — Celtics coach Brad Stevens has said what has carried his team through the NBA postseason is its ability to make "winning plays" with the game on the line. And more times than not, it's been Marcus Smart making them.Since returning from thumb surgery late in the first round, Smart has been unflappable and Boston's unquestioned deacon of toughness. From sacrificing his body diving for loose balls or keeping plays alive with a rebound , to causing deflections on defense, to popping up out of the crowd for a timely rebound or tip-in, Smart is the proud everyman for a once underdog Celtics team that has outworked the Cavaliers through the first two games of the Eastern Conference finals."That's me. That's how I was raised," said Smart, who was Boston's top performer off the bench in the Celtics' 107-94 Game 2 win with 11 points, nine assists, five rebounds and four steals. "I'm the youngest of four boys. My whole life I had to fight."I had to get down and do things in order to secure... [More]
Mon May 14 201818:16Lineup change possible as LeBron, Cavs look to bounce back
BOSTON (AP) — Put Kevin Love's name atop the list of the Cavaliers that walked out of Cleveland's 25-point Eastern Conference finals Game 1 loss to Boston a little staggered, but with an unbowed head. The reason: He's got a teammate by the name of LeBron James that's had a way of responding after lopsided playoff defeats.Just ask the Indiana Pacers. The Pacers stunned the Cavs at home in their first-round opener, rolling to an 18-point victory. In Game 2, James was all but unstoppable as he replied with a 46-point, 12-rebound performance."I expect him to have a big response," Love said of James on Monday. "He's always done it. Even before he came back to Cleveland and since I've been here he's always responded big. .... He's going to approach this game as one that he's going to have to lead and bounce back."Even if James does have a big Game 2 Tuesday night in Boston, he'll need some help — and the Cavaliers know it.Love said he thought the Cavs were a "little soft" in the first half in Game... Sun Mar 4 201800:29Soup-er man: Cavs' Smith back from soup-throwing suspension
INDEPENDENCE, Ohio (AP) — J.R. Smith's return from suspension was, ahem, soup-er. For one half.Smith scored all 19 of his points in the second half Saturday, but the struggling Cavaliers couldn't stop Denver's long-range shooting attack in a 126-117 loss to the Nuggets.Much like his season, Smith's comeback after he was benched by Cleveland for throwing a bowl of soup at Cavs assistant coach Damon Jones was strange. One of the NBA's least bashful shooters, Smith did not attempt a shot in the first half. But he let loose after halftime, making 7 of 8 shots before missing his last four."In the second half I just figured to hell with it, just be more aggressive," Smith said. "If they double me, try to get around them and then make a play. Just a different mindset, I guess."It's been an interesting 72 hours for Smith, who did not reveal his soup choice or the ingredients that steamed him so much he threw his soup at Jones following Thursday's shootaround. He sat out that night's game against... Sat Mar 3 201813:59Soup opera: Cavs' Smith mum on kind of soup thrown at coach
INDEPENDENCE, Ohio (AP) — J.R. Smith's soup choice remains unknown, and so do the ingredients that steamed him so much he threw a bowl of soup at assistant coach Damon Jones.Smith was suspended one game by the Cavaliers, and Saturday the temperamental guard addressed the latest drama in what has been a tumultuous season for the three-time defending Eastern Conference champions.Asked what he could share about the soup spat, Smith was as cold as gazpacho."Nothing," he said. And as for the kind of soup he flung?"Honestly," he said Saturday following the team's shootaround. "I don't even remember."Smith, who is expected to start on Saturday after serving his one-game ban Thursday against Philadelphia, refused to say if he agreed with the discipline. He said he spoke with his teammates about what happened but not with Jones, a former NBA player who has been on Tyronn Lue's staff for two seasons."It's not really my call," the 31-year-old said on the merits of his punishment. "More than anything,... [More]
