Tue Jun 27 202318:16Matthew Boyd To Undergo Tommy John Surgery
Detroit Tigers starting pitcher Matthew Boyd (elbow) has been placed on the 60-day injured list on Tuesday. That is not good news after Boyd exited early during Monday's start against the Texas Rangers due to elbow discomfort. Now, it appears the left-hander is set to miss the rest of the season due to a partial sprain of his left UCL. Boyd is expected to undergo Tommy John surgery. The Tigers rotation takes another hit with Eduardo Rodriguez (finger) and Tarik Skubal (elbow) already sidelined. Luckily, right-hander Matt Manning (foot) is set to return on Tuesday, so his return will soften the blow of Boyd. The expectation is that Boyd won't be able to pitch again until mid-season of 2024.

Mon Jun 26 202322:12Matthew Boyd Leaves Early With Elbow Discomfort
Updating a previous report, Detroit Tigers left-hander Matthew Boyd (elbow) left his start early on Monday against the Texas Rangers with left-elbow discomfort. Boyd only made it two-thirds of an inning in the first and allowed a run on a solo home run while striking out two. Fantasy managers will want to check back for updates on his status after the Tigers get the results of tests back either Monday night or Tuesday morning. The good news for Detroit is that if Boyd requires an injured-list stint, they have Matt Manning (foot) returning to the rotation on Tuesday and lefties Eduardo Rodriguez (finger) and Tarik Skubal (elbow) not far behind him. Boyd entered his start on Monday with a 5.37 ERA (4.25 FIP), 1.32 WHIP, 25 walks and 71 K's in 70 1/3 innings over his 14 starts.

Hinch and the Tigers' head trainer. He was replaced on the mound by Will Vest. Stay tuned as the Tigers are likely to update Boyd's status following Monday's game.

Wed Mar 29 202316:36Matthew Boyd To Start Monday Against Astros
Detroit Tigers left-hander Matthew Boyd is lined up to start the team's fourth game of the season on Monday on the road against the Houston Astros. Eduardo Rodriguez, Spencer Turnbull and Joey Wentz will start the first three games of the season in the opening series against the Tampa Bay Rays. Matt Manning will go on Tuesday against Houston. Boyd, a 32-year-old southpaw, made his return late last season after having flexor-tendon surgery on his left arm and was pretty impressive with the Seattle Mariners in a relief role. He'll be used as a starter in 2023, though, and likely workload restrictions are what will mostly keep his fantasy appeal limited.

Thu Dec 1 202211:31Matthew Boyd Agrees With Tigers
The Detroit Tigers and left-hander Matthew Boyd agreed to a deal on Thursday, pending a physical, according to sources familiar with the deal. MLB Network's Jon Heyman is reporting that the deal is for $10 million-plus. The 31-year-old southpaw spent seven seasons with the Tigers from 2015 to 2021 and returns to a team looking to overhaul its pitching staff under new president Scott Harris. Boyd signed with the San Francisco Giants in 2022 and was traded to the Seattle Mariners in early August. He made just 10 relief appearances (13 1/3 innings) but was great with a 1.35 ERA, 13 strikeouts and eight walks for the M's. Boyd didn't make his season debut until September due to injury, but when healthy, he could be an effective swing man for Detroit's pitching staff.

Thu Sep 1 202211:11Matthew Boyd Reinstated From Injured List
The Seattle Mariners reinstated relief pitcher Matthew Boyd (elbow) from the 60-day injured list on Thursday and recalled outfielder Taylor Trammell from Triple-A Tacoma with rosters expanding. Boyd will work exclusively in relief for the Mariners as he makes his 2022 debut in the big leagues. The 31-year-old left-hander had flexor tendon surgery last September and has been working his way back to the majors ever since. The good news is he fanned 14 in eight innings on his minor league rehab assignment, so he appears to be fully healthy and ready to go. Boyd will be a nice real-life piece of the bullpen with plenty of experience, but he's not really on the fantasy radar to close out the season.

Mon Aug 29 202214:57Matthew Boyd To Join Mariners In Detroit
Seattle Mariners left-handed pitcher Matthew Boyd (elbow) will reportedly be activated at some point for the team's upcoming series against the Detroit Tigers, according to The Detroit News' Chris McCosky. McCosky notes in his tweet that the left-hander will pitch out of the bullpen for the Mariners. A starter for most of his career in the Majors, the left-hander previously made 15 starts for Detroit last season. In those 15 starts, he turned in a 3.89 ERA, a 4.10 FIP, 67 strikeouts, and 23 walks in 78.2 innings for the Tigers.

Sat Aug 27 202211:15Matthew Boyd Tosses Scoreless Inning In Rehab Game
Seattle Mariners left-hander Matthew Boyd (elbow) tossed a scoreless and hitless inning in his latest minor league rehab outing for Triple-A Tacoma on Friday night, walking none and striking out two. Boyd has now made five rehab appearances for Tacoma and has allowed two earned runs and four hits while walking none and striking out 12 in seven innings pitched. The 31-year-old southpaw is getting close to being ready to make his 2022 season debut with the Mariners, where he'll provide Seattle's bullpen with a valuable and experienced relief arm. Boyd won't be much to look at for fantasy purposes, however, and he's never saved a game in his seven-year MLB career with the Toronto Blue Jays and Detroit Tigers.

Sat Aug 20 202211:27Matthew Boyd Throws Two Innings In Latest Rehab Start
Seattle Mariners left-hander Matthew Boyd (elbow) allowed two earned runs on two hits while walking none and striking out four in two innings pitched in his latest minor league rehab outing for Triple-A Tacoma on Friday. In his three outings so far with Tacoma, Boyd has allowed two earned runs on three hits while walking one and striking out seven in just four innings pitched. The 31-year-old southpaw was acquired from the San Francisco Giants at the Aug. 2 trade deadline, but he hasn't pitched in the majors in 2022 after having flexor tendon surgery last September. Based on his outings in the minors, it looks like the Mariners will use him in relief when he's ready to make his season debut in Seattle, so he'll be pretty useless in fantasy.

Sat Aug 13 202217:35Matthew Boyd Begins Rehab Assignment
Seattle Mariners pitcher Matthew Boyd (elbow) is expected to make his first rehab outing of the season with Triple-A Tacoma on Saturday, according to Chris McCosky of Detroit News. He has yet to pitch at any level this season due to a flexor strain in his left elbow. The 31-year-old southpaw last pitched in 2021, filling a rotation role for Detroit. He posted a 3.89 ERA, 1.27 WHIP, and .255 OBA along with 7.67 K/9 and 2.63 BB/9 through 15 starts. He signed with the Giants in March but was traded to the Mariners at the deadline. He will likely pitch out of the rotation upon his return to the majors.

Thu Aug 4 202221:40Matthew Boyd Throws Bullpen Session On Thursday
Seattle Mariners pitcher Matthew Boyd (elbow) threw a bullpen session with the Tacoma Rainiers on Thursday. The next step for the southpaw will be a rehab assignment. He has been sidelined all season as Boyd continues to work his way back from surgery on his flexor tendon last September. The 31-year-old went 3-8 with a 3.89 ERA, 1.27 WHIP, 67 strikeouts, and 23 walks in 78 2/3 innings over 15 starts. Boyd will most likely be used in a multi-inning relief role once activated from the injured list and is mainly an option in deep-league formats.

Tue Aug 2 202216:59Matthew Boyd Headed To Seattle
The Seattle Mariners acquired left-hander Matthew Boyd (elbow) from the San Francisco Giants on Tuesday. Boyd has yet to pitch in 2022 and was shut down in mid-June after he felt discomfort in his elbow while recovering from left flexor tendon surgery. The 31-year-old southpaw was cleared to resume throwing off a mound last week, though. In his last season with the Detroit Tigers in 2021, he went 3-8 with a 3.89 ERA, 1.27 WHIP, 67 strikeouts and 23 walks in 78 2/3 innings over 15 starts. It's unclear if Boyd will be an option for the Mariners rotation at some point late in the second half of the 2022 season.

Tue Jun 14 202209:16Matthew Boyd Experiences Elbow Soreness On Monday
San Francisco Giants left-handed pitcher Matthew Boyd (forearm) had his live batting practice session cut short on Monday. He was feeling some elbow discomfort while throwing. The 31-year-old underwent forearm flexor tendon surgery last September and has been working his way back slowly ever since. He began throwing bullpen sessions in late April and had been trending toward a rehab assignment, but the team will likely have to make some adjustments to his recovery plan now. Boyd spent the past six-plus seasons with the Detroit Tigers before signing with the Giants this offseason. Last year, over 15 starts, he went 3-8 with a 3.89 ERA and a 1.27 WHIP.

Mon Jun 13 202211:47Matthew Boyd To Throw Batting Practice Monday
San Francisco Giants left-hander Matthew Boyd (forearm) is continuing his rehab in San Francisco and is scheduled to throw a live batting practice session at Oracle Park on Monday. Boyd has been throwing 40-pitch bullpen sessions since late April and has been using all of his pitches. The 31-year-old southpaw had left flexor tendon surgery last September and could begin a minor league rehab assignment soon as long as his throwing session on Monday goes well. Boyd probably won't make his season debut for the Giants until later this month or in early July.

Tue Apr 12 202211:40Matthew Boyd Throwing Off A Mound
San Francisco Giants left-hander Matthew Boyd (elbow) continues to throw off a mound twice a week and is making good progress. Boyd had elbow surgery last September, and the Giants knew when they signed him to a one-year deal that he wouldn't be ready this year until sometime in June. The 31-year-old southpaw looks to be doing well in his rehab, though, but fantasy managers in mixed leagues can continue to ignore him for now. In 15 starts for the Detroit Tigers in 2021, Boyd had a 3.89 ERA, 1.27 WHIP, 67 strikeouts and 23 walks in 78 2/3 innings.

Thu Mar 17 202210:13Matthew Boyd Heads To Giants
The San Francisco Giants signed free-agent left-hander Matthew Boyd to a one-year, $5.2 million deal on Wednesday evening. The deal includes $2.3 million in incentives. Boyd becomes the fifth starting pitcher signed or re-signed by the Giants this offseason following Anthony DeSclafani, Alex Wood, Alex Cobb and Carlos Rodon. The 31-year-old southpaw had surgery to fix a flexor tendon in his left arm in September and isn't expected to be ready for game action until sometime this summer. In 15 starts for the Detroit Tigers before his injury in 2021, he had a 3.89 ERA and 1.27 WHIP while striking out 67 and walking 23 in 78 2/3 innings. Boyd will give San Fran some more rotation depth in the second half if he's healthy.

Sun Feb 13 202215:05Matthew Boyd Expects To Be Ready By June
Left-handed pitcher Matthew Boyd (elbow), who was designated for assignment by the Detroit Tigers just before the lockout began in early December, said he expects to be ready for game action in early June after having surgery last September to fix the flexor tendon in his left arm. The 31-year-old southpaw said his "elbow feels better than it ever has," and he's been throwing from up to 75 feet. Boyd expects to begin throwing bullpen sessions in the last two weeks of March. Interested teams may want to wait to make sure that his recovery is going smoothly before adding him to their roster when/if the lockout ends. Boyd obviously won't be a fantasy asset in single-year leagues to begin the 2022 season, but he could become worth a waiver-wire pickup, depending on his health and where he lands.

Tue Nov 30 202120:59Matthew Boyd Non-Tendered By Tigers
Starting pitcher Matthew Boyd is set for free agency, as the Detroit Tigers have opted not to tender him a contract for the 2022 season. The left-handed Boyd was estimated by Matt Swartz of MLB Trade Rumors to earn $7.3 million dollars through arbitration in the 2022 season. There's enough upside that he should have little trouble catching on with a new team, but he's coming off two forearm injuries that put an end to his 2021 season with only 78 2/3 innings pitched. For his career, Boyd has a 4.96 ERA and 1.33 WHIP with 759 strikeouts in 784 1/3 innings pitched. Other remaining left-handed starters on the open market include Clayton Kershaw, Carlos Rodon, and Yusei Kikuchi.

Fri Sep 24 202118:22Matthew Boyd Set To Have Season-Ending Surgery
Detroit Tigers starting pitcher Matthew Boyd (elbow) will undergo surgery to repair the flexor tendon in his left arm, Jason Beck of MLB.com reported. The 30-year-old southpaw was sidelined for more than two months this season due to discomfort in his left arm and has struggled since returning, going 1-4 in his last starts with a 6.10 ERA and surrendered 21 earned runs in the process. There is no timetable yet for Boyd to return to the mound, although the Tigers are optimistic he will be able to pitch next season.
