Wed Jul 5 202313:59Jimmy Cordero Suspended For Rest Of The Year
New York Yankees relief pitcher Jimmy Cordero has been suspended for the remainder of the 2023 season for violating the league's joint domestic-violence, sexual-assault and child-abuse policy. Cordero is now on the restricted list. The 31-year-old Dominican right-hander had been decent and had appeared in 31 games (one start) for the Yankees this year and posted a 3.86 ERA (3.11 FIP), 1.07 WHIP, 10 walks and a career-high 34 strikeouts in 32 2/3 innings pitched, but we won't see him again until 2024 if he gets another shot with a major-league team.

Mon May 15 202314:05Jimmy Cordero To Serve As Opener Against Blue Jays
The New York Yankees announced that right-hander Jimmy Cordero will serve as the opener for Monday's contest against the Toronto Blue Jays. Behind Cordero, Jhony Brito appears likely to serve as the bulk reliever, so he'll be the better DFS play to begin the week. The 31-year-old Cordero has been solid for the Yankees so far out of the bullpen, allowing only five runs on 10 hits (one homer) while walking three and striking out 17 in 16 innings in his 15 appearances in relief. This will be his first "start" in the big leagues, but he won't have any fantasy appeal in what will likely be just an inning or two of work against Toronto.

Sat May 6 202310:30Jimmy Cordero Hit With Loss Against Rays
New York Yankees relief pitcher Jimmy Cordero lost his first game of the season in Friday's 5-4 road defeat at the hands of the Tampa Bay Rays. Cordero surrendered one earned run on one hit while walking a batter in just one-third of an inning for the Yankees in the bottom of the seventh inning. It was a minor hiccup for the 31-year-old, who had been pitching well going into Friday's game. Overall, the Dominican right-hander has allowed only three runs on seven hits (one homer) while walking one and fanning 13 hitters in 11 1/3 relief innings so far this season. Cordero will look to bounce back with a scoreless frame in his next appearance.

Fri Dec 17 202111:37Yankees Sign Reliever Jimmy Cordero
The New York Yankees signed former Chicago White Sox and Philadelphia Phillies relief pitcher Jimmy Cordero to a minor league deal on Wednesday. The right-hander was recovering from Tommy John surgery that he had in March and did not pitch at all last season. The 30-year-old could be a nice high-upside, low-risk signing, but it's unclear when he might be ready to pitch for the Yankees. Cordero had one of the best chase rates in 2020 despite being among the leaders in exit velocity. He had a 6.08 ERA while striking out 22 hitters in 26 2/3 innings in 30 relief appearances for the White Sox in 2020. Cordero was allowed to sign during MLB's lockout because he ended the 2021 season off the 40-man roster of another team.

Tue Jul 6 202120:48Yasmani Grandal out 4-6 weeks with torn tendon in left knee
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Catcher Yasmani Grandal was placed on the 10-day injured list Tuesday by the Chicago White Sox with a torn tendon in his left knee. Grandal was injured during an at-bat in Monday's loss in Minnesota. Chicago estimated Grandal will be out approximately four to six weeks. “It was a twist that he made as he made his swing," White Sox manager Tony La Russa said. “Something got caught. It didn’t free up to make a turn on it. It got caught and something popped. I’m anxious to get a full diagnosis. He’s on his way to Chicago, maybe in Chicago already, and we’ll know more tomorrow.” Grandal was hitting just .188 as Chicago's starting catcher, but he had a .388 on-base percentage in 63 games to go with 14 home runs and 38 RBIs. Seby Zavala, 27, was recalled from Triple-A Charlotte and was with the team for Tuesday's game in Minnesota. Zack Collins started Tuesday at catcher. “He was as productive as any position player we have for the last month or so," La Russa said of Grandal.... [More]
Sun Oct 4 202019:23No days off puts stress on pitchers in Division Series, LCS
NEW YORK (AP) — Postseason games come at an unprecedented pace starting Monday in this year of the pandemic. Teams could play the Division Series over five straight days, take a single day off and then contest the League Championship Series on seven consecutive days. That could could stress closers such as Aroldis Chapman, Liam Hendriks and Kenley Jansen, and starters like Gerrit Cole and Walker Buehler. “I’m old school, I guess, but it’s all about winning. And if they needed me, I wanted them to put me in there, ” said Darold Knowles, who helped Oakland win the 1973 title by becoming the first to pitch in all seven World Series games. “I think that’s the way everybody feels now, but they’re so afraid they’re going to hurt somebody. And I understand that. I think it’s a little bit overdone.” No one has pitched in games for five straight days since Shawn Tolleson for Texas from Sept. 29 to Oct. 3, 2015, according to the Elias Sports Bureau. The last to pitch for seven straight days was San... [More]
Sat Sep 26 202016:55White Sox P Cordero suspended 3 games for hitting Contreras
CHICAGO (AP) — Major League Baseball suspended Chicago White Sox reliever Jimmy Cordero for three games Saturday and fined him an undisclosed amount for hitting the Cubs' Willson Contreras with a pitch. Manager Rick Renteria was suspended for one game, and he and pitching coach Don Cooper were also fined. Renteria, who served his suspension on Saturday, expected Cordero to appeal his punishment. “They did what they had to do,” Renteria said. “They have a protocol that they instituted this year. They're trying to stay consistent and follow it, so just abide by it.” Cordero, Renteria and Cooper were ejected from Friday's 10-0 loss by plate umpire Dan Bellino after Cordero hit Contreras with a pitch in the seventh inning. Cordero said after the game it was unintentional and he simply threw a bad pitch. Contreras hit a three-run shot off Dylan Cease in the third, then exited the batter’s box with sky-high bat flip. He also greeted White Sox utilityman Yolmer Sanchez, who pitched the ninth, with a solo shot for his eighth career multihomer game. The playoff-bound White Sox had lost six straight and were tied with Cleveland for second place in the AL Central behind Minnesota entering Saturday's game. ___ More AP MLB: https://apnews.com/MLB and https://twitter.com/AP_Sports
