DETROIT (AP) β€” A former clubhouse attendant has brought a discrimination lawsuit against the Detroit Tigers and former pitching coach Chris Bosio.In a complaint filed this week in Wayne County Circuit Court, Derrell Coleman II, who is black, accuses Tigers management of tolerating "a culture of racism" and says Bosio called him a "monkey" in June of 2018. Bosio was fired around that time.The suit says the 22-year-old Coleman has experienced mental anguish and emotional distress."When this allegation was first brought to the attention of club management, we took swift and immediate action," the Tigers said in a statement Friday. "We strongly refute the allegations against our organization made in Thursday's filing. (AP) β€” When Michael Fulmer arrived in the major leagues in 2016, his impact was impressive and immediate.Now, the Detroit right-hander will settle for steady progress.Three years after that sparkling debut season, Fulmer is at a bit of a crossroads. He won AL Rookie of the Year honors in 2016 but has struggled to return to that form, especially last year, when he went 3-12 with a 4.69 ERA. MINNEAPOLIS (AP) β€” The Detroit Tigers had to change their starting pitcher for their game at Minnesota after a mix-up with Jacob Turner.The Tigers had planned to go with Turner, but the right-hander hadn't met a required 10-day waiting period since being designated for assignment on Aug. 10.Instead, Detroit recalled left-hander Daniel Stumpf from Triple-A Toledo on Sunday and Buck Farmer made his first start of the season. DETROIT (AP) β€” Pitching coach Chris Bosio said Thursday he was fired by the Detroit Tigers for using the word "monkey," but insists he didn't say it in a racial or demeaning context.Bosio told USA Today he used the word while talking about pitcher Daniel Stumpf, who is white. Bosio said Stumpf is nicknamed "Spider Monkey" because of the faces he makes while lifting weights.Bosio said an African-American clubhouse attendant overheard the conversation.
