Tue Dec 12 202315:46Seth Lugo Goes To Royals On Three-Year Deal
Free-agent right-hander Seth Lugo agreed with the Kansas City Royals on a three-year deal worth $45 million on Tuesday. The third year of Lugo's deal with Kansas City will be a $15 million player option. The 34-year-old veteran cashed in on what will likely be the final big free-agent deal of his career after excelling in a full-time starting role with the San Diego Padres in 2023. Last year, Lugo went 8-7 with the Friars with a 3.57 ERA (3.83 FIP) and 1.20 WHIP with 36 walks and a career-high 140 strikeouts in 146 1/3 innings over his 26 starts. He'll be guaranteed a full-time starting role again in 2024 with the rebuilding Royals and will now reside in one of the best divisions in baseball for pitchers in the weak American League Central.

Tue Dec 5 202313:31Red Sox Going After Seth Lugo
The Boston Red Sox are stepping up their efforts on free-agent right-hander Seth Lugo, although four or five other teams, including the Atlanta Braves, are interested in his services as well. The Red Sox are expected to make an offer to Lugo at some point as they look to boost their starting rotation this offseason. Lugo declined his $7.4 million option for 2024 with the San Diego Padres after posting a 3.57 ERA and 1.20 WHIP in 146 1/3 innings as a full-time starter for the Friars this past season. Given how well he pitched in a starting role, Lugo should easily be able to top $7 million per year on what will likely the final big contract of his career. Lugo could still be valuable in mixed fantasy leagues as an innings-eater, but a move to the American League East will make it difficult to replicate the fine year he had in SD.

Thu Nov 2 202321:02Seth Lugo Declines Player Option For 2024
San Diego Padres right-hander Seth Lugo has declined his $7.5 million player option for the 2024 season on Thursday, according to sources. It doesn't come as a big surprise after Lugo had a very fine 2023 campaign in his first year in San Diego. He was a full-time starter and made a career-high 26 starts and posted a solid 3.57 ERA (3.83 FIP), 1.20 WHIP, 36 walks and a career-high 140 strikeouts for the Friars in 146 1/3 innings pitched. The 33-year-old should be able to find a much more lucrative long-term deal this winter after his performance in 2023, even at his age. Lugo will almost assuredly be looking for another situation where he will remain in the starting rotation all year long, but his versatility as a reliever should make him even more attractive to interested teams on the open market.

Mon Aug 7 202321:49Seth Lugo Roughed Up On Monday
San Diego Padres right-hander Seth Lugo was hit hard by the Los Angeles Dodgers in a 13-7 loss on Monday. Lugo allowed eight runs on eight hits over 3 1/3 innings while striking out two and walking two in the lopsided loss. He cruised through three scoreless innings before the Dodgers' bats woke up and hung an eight-spot on Lugo in the fourth frame. Lugo wound up taking the loss, dropping his record to 4-6, to go along with a 4.19 ERA, 1.26 WHIP, and 90 strikeouts over 92 1/3 innings of work. The 33-year-old will look to bounce back in his next start, which is scheduled for Sunday against the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Tue Jun 20 202320:00Seth Lugo Activated And Starting On Tuesday
The San Diego Padres reinstated right-hander Seth Lugo (calf) from the 15-day injured list on Tuesday and designated right-hander Nabil Crismatt for assignment in a corresponding move. Lugo will make his return and make the start on the road on Tuesday against the San Francisco Giants. He will not be a recommended fantasy streamer against the streaking Giants, mainly because he hasn't pitched in the big leagues since May 16 and didn't go on a minor-league rehab assignment. Expect Lugo's pitch count to be limited in his first game back. In his eight starts for the Friars before going on the injured list, Lugo had gone 3-3 with a 4.10 ERA (3.95 FIP), 1.37 WHIP, 11 walks and 38 strikeouts in 41 2/3 innings pitched.

Fri Jun 16 202309:34Seth Lugo Completes Sim Game Thursday
Before the first pitch of Thursday's matchup with the Cleveland Guardians, San Diego Padres starter Seth Lugo (calf) pitched in a simulated game, tossing 57 pitches over three innings. There's now a chance that the right-hander could return to the rotation next week when the club travels to San Francisco without making a rehab start. Lugo's been on the injured list since straining his left calf during his last start on May 16. Before the ailment, he pitched to a 4.10 ERA, 1.37 WHIP, and 21.3% strikeout rate across 41.2 innings of work. When Lugo does return, it'll likely push Ryan Weathers out of the rotation. The 23-year-old has almost no relevance in fantasy baseball, as he owns a 6.08 ERA with just 27 punchouts over 40 innings.

Thu May 18 202322:02Seth Lugo Lands On 15-Day Injured List
San Diego Padres right-hander Seth Lugo (calf) was placed on the 15-day injured list Thursday due to a left calf strain. He strained his calf while running to first base on a play that ended the second inning during his last start on Tuesday. The 33-year-old will miss the next few turns in the rotation. Lugo owned a (3-3) record with a 4.10 ERA, 1.37 WHIP, and a 38:11 K: BB across 41 2/3 innings before landing on the injured list. Ryan Weathers was recalled from Triple-A El Paso in a corresponding move to replace Lugo on the big league roster. Weathers owns a 3.42 ERA, 1.14 WHIP, and a 14:9 K: BB across 23 2/3 innings in the majors while tossing eight scoreless innings with an 8:7 K: BB in Triple-A. Fantasy managers searching for pitching can add Weathers in deep-league formats.

Wed May 17 202309:40Seth Lugo Unlikely To Make His Next Start
San Diego Padres starting pitcher Seth Lugo (calf) strained his calf while running to first base on a play that ended the second inning, according to AJ Cassavell of MLB.com, and he didn't come back out for the third. Before his exit, the right-hander was shelled, giving up five runs on four hits and two walks while striking out a pair against the Kansas City Royals. Manager Bob Melvin told reporters after the game that Lugo will most likely miss his next scheduled start. The 33-year-old is running a 4.10 ERA, 1.37 WHIP, and 21.3% strikeout rate with a 3-3 record, so fantasy managers won't be missing much if he takes a trip to the injured list. It's unclear who will take his spot in the rotation, so stay tuned for more updates on the situation.

Fri Apr 21 202308:57Seth Lugo To Make His Fourth Start On Friday
San Diego Padres right-hander Seth Lugo is set to make his fourth start of the season when he gets the ball for Friday's matchup with Zac Gallen and the Arizona Diamondbacks. The former New York Mets reliever is a full-time starter for the first time since 2017, but so far, he's adjusted nicely. Lugo owns a 2.70 ERA with a 1.32 WHIP, 24.3% strikeout rate and 7.1% walk rate. Volume hasn't been a problem, as he's pitched 16.2 innings over his three starts. Lugo is relevant in almost all fantasy leagues as long as he keeps producing.

Mon Apr 3 202300:49Seth Lugo Dominates Rockies In Win
San Diego Padres right-handed pitcher Seth Lugo shined over seven innings against the Colorado Rockies on Sunday, leading the Padres to a 3-1 win. Lugo stifled the Rockies lineup in his first start since 2020, allowing just four hits and striking out seven while not walking a batter. Lugo was efficient as well, needing just 93 pitches. If Lugo, who has been a great reliever for many years, can keep his effectiveness while starting games, he will be a great fantasy option while pitching for a very good Padres team that should give him run support. He is certainly someone to keep an eye on.

Tue Feb 14 202312:50Seth Lugo To Be Part Of Six-Man Rotation
The San Diego Padres were set to open spring training with five starters -- Yu Darvish, Joe Musgrove, Blake Snell, Nick Martinez and Seth Lugo -- but they had a desire to use a six-man rotation after it was successful in the early stages of 2022. The Padres signed right-hander Michael Wacha on Tuesday, and he's expected to slot into what will be a six-man rotation to begin 2023, including Lugo and Martinez, who both have a track record of success in the bullpen. Opening the year with six starters will ease the burden on the entire staff as they get settled in. The 33-year-old Lugo hasn't made a start since 2020 and hasn't been a full-time starter since 2017, so workload restrictions should be expected eventually, and he'll have to pitch well if he wants to stick in the rotation.

Mon Dec 19 202214:33Padres Finalizing Deal With Seth Lugo
According to a tweet from The New York Post's Jon Heyman on Monday morning, the San Diego Padres are reportedly finalizing a deal with free-agent pitcher Seth Lugo. The 33-year-old right-hander pitched to a 3.60 ERA and a 3.76 FIP in 62 appearances for the New York Mets last season. Pitching exclusively as a relief pitcher, the veteran logged 65 innings during the 2022 campaign. In those 65 innings, he registered 69 strikeouts to go along with 18 walks, three saves and 16 holds. According to The Athletic's Fabian Ardaya, Lugo's deal is for two years and $15 million and includes a second-year player option. He'll have a chance to start for the Friars, which is what he was looking for on the open market. The Los Angeles Dodgers and Washington Nationals were also interested in him.

Thu Dec 15 202218:46Phillies Interested In Seth Lugo As A Reliever
The Philadelphia Phillies are showing interest in free-agent right-hander Seth Lugo, but likely as a relief pitcher. Lugo prefers to start and has received a lot of interest this offseason for a rotation spot, with the San Diego Padres, Los Angeles Dodgers and Washington Nationals among his other suitors. The 33-year-old veteran was very solid for the New York Mets the last two years strictly as a reliever, posting a 3.56 ERA (3.77 FIP), a 1.22 WHIP, four saves and 124 strikeouts in 111 1/3 innings over 108 appearances out of the bullpen. Lugo wouldn't be a closing candidate in a revamped Phillies bullpen if he lands there. The best guess is that he's holding out for a starting gig elsewhere. He has made 38 career starts in seven major-league seasons, with his most recent start coming back in 2020.

Fri Dec 9 202213:22Seth Lugo Attracting Interest From Three Teams
The Los Angeles Dodgers, San Diego Padres and Washington Nationals are pursuing free-agent right-hander Seth Lugo. He's likely to be given a chance to start in 2023 and has flexibility to pitch in relief as well. The Nationals just signed swingman Trevor Williams on Friday, but they could also add Lugo to give them additional pitching depth. Lugo, 33, has served as an effective swingman for the New York Mets for the last seven seasons, and he went 3-2 with a 3.60 ERA (3.76 FIP), a 1.17 WHIP, three saves and a 69:18 K:BB in 65 innings over 62 relief appearances in 2022. He hasn't been as effective in recent seasons as he was in 2019, but he's very useful for his ability to start and pitch in relief.

Wed Dec 7 202214:35Seth Lugo Drawing A Lot Of Interest To Start
Free-agent pitcher Seth Lugo is reportedly "drawing a lot of interest to start," per a tweet from The New York Post's Jon Heyman on Wednesday morning. Lugo pitched as a reliever for the New York Mets last season, logging a 3.60 ERA and a 3.76 FIP in 65 innings. In those 65 innings, which came over the course of 62 appearances, the 33-year-old also logged 69 strikeouts, 18 walks, three wins, three saves and 16 holds. Of the right-hander's 275 career appearances in the majors, 38 have been starts, including seven most recently during the 2020 season. The Mets don't appear to be interested in Lugo as a starter, so he's unlikely to re-sign with them.

Mon Nov 14 202214:59Seth Lugo Reportedly Drawing Interest As A Starter
Free agent pitcher Seth Lugo is reportedly drawing interest from teams as a starting pitcher, per an article in The Athletic from Will Sammon. Lugo enjoyed a solid season out of the bullpen for the New York Mets in 2022, pitching to a 3.60 ERA and a 3.76 FIP in 65 innings of work. He also turned in 69 strikeouts compared to just 18 walks allowed while registering three saves, three pitcher wins, and 16 holds. As Sammon noted in his article, Lugo has 194.2 innings under his belt as a starter at the Major League level. As of now, New York's current bullpen options ahead of closer Edwin Diaz include the likes of right-handers Drew Smith, Stephen Nogosek, Yoan Lpez, John Curtiss, and Bryce Montes De Oca as well as left-hander Tayler Saucedo.

Tue May 3 202221:53Seth Lugo Records Second Save On Tuesday
New York Mets pitcher Seth Lugo allowed one hit across a scoreless inning to earn the save in Tuesday's Game 2 win over the Atlanta Braves. Edwin Diaz pitched Game 1 of Tuesday's doubleheader, and manager Buck Showalter turned to Lugo to close out the nightcap. The 32-year-old retired three of four hitters he faced to earn his second save of the season. He now owns a 3.48 ERA, 1.35 WHIP, and 10 strikeouts over 10 1/3 innings in 2022. Lugo has racked up two saves and four holds this year and is worth rostering in deep-league formats or leagues that rewards the category solds.

BOSTON (AP) — Rafael Devers hit two home runs, including a go-ahead blast in the fifth inning, to help the Boston Red Sox best New York Yankees ace Gerrit Cole for the second straight time at Fenway Park in a 6-2 victory Friday night. The Red Sox maintained their one-game AL East lead over Tampa Bay and increased their lead to nine games over the third-place Yankees.
