Fri Oct 13 202312:05James Kaprielian Outrighted By A's
The Oakland Athletics outrighted right-hander James Kaprielian (shoulder), left-hander Sam Long and catcher Carlos Perez to Triple-A Las Vegas on Thursday. Kaprielian cleared waivers after he was on the 60-day injured list this year following surgery to fix the posterior labrum in his right shoulder in August. It remains to be seen if the 29-year-old will be ready to go for the start of spring training in 2024. In 14 outings (11 starts) before his injury in 2023, Kaprielian went 2-6 with a rough 6.34 ERA (5.08 FIP), 1.59 WHIP, 31 walks and 57 strikeouts in 61 innings pitched in his fourth big-league season with the A's. He has a career 4.61 ERA (4.67 FIP), 1.35 WHIP and 282 K's in 66 outings (58 starts) in his four seasons in the majors.

Wed Aug 2 202318:29James Kaprielian Undergoes Season-Ending Surgery
Oakland Athletics starting pitcher James Kaprielian (shoulder) underwent successful right shoulder surgery on Wednesday. The right-hander is done for the season and is likely to miss time in 2024 as well. He was rehabbing his shoulder injury, but has decided to undergo arthroscopic surgery to repair a labrum injury. Before that, Kaprielian held a rough 6.34 ERA. 1.59 WHIP and 57/31 K/BB ratio through 11 starts with the A's. The expectation is that he'll be back in early 2024.

Sun Jul 23 202312:30James Kaprielian Throws Bullpen Saturday
Oakland Athletics right-hander James Kaprielian (shoulder) threw a 35-pitch bullpen session on Saturday, but there currently is no timetable for his return from a strained right shoulder. Right-hander Mason Miller (elbow) was also scheduled to throw all fastballs on Saturday after progressing from playing long toss to throwing off flat ground. The next step for both Kaprielian and Miller is to face live hitters before potentially going on minor-league rehab assignments. Miller is attempting to return from a UCL sprain he suffered in early May. When healthy, both Kaprielian and Miller should return to starting-rotation spots with the last-place A's, but that's probably not going to come until early August.

Fri Jul 14 202320:16Mason Miller, James Kaprielian To Throw Saturday
Oakland Athletics manager Mark Kotsay said that right-handers Mason Miller (elbow) and James Kaprielian (shoulder) will both throw off flat ground on Saturday. Miller, a 24-year-old rookie, is trying to return from a sprained UCL that put him on the injured list in May. Before the injury, he had impressed in his first four big-league starts, allowing eight earned runs on 14 hits while walking seven and striking out 22 in 21 1/3 innings. He will be a rotation option for the A's and fantasy managers in the second half. Kaprielian is dealing with a right-shoulder strain and received a cortisone injection earlier this month. There is no timetable for either pitcher's return to Oakland. Kaprielian has a rough 6.34 ERA (5.10 FIP), 1.59 WHIP, 31 walks and 57 K's in 14 outings (11 starts) over 61 innings in 2023.

Sun Mar 12 202321:16James Kaprielian Makes Spring Debut
Oakland Athletics starting pitcher James Kaprielian (shoulder) took the mound for the first time this spring on Sunday against the San Diego Padres. The right-hander struck out five batters over one 2/3 innings of work. However, he also walked three batters and allowed one hit as well. Kaprielian looked good as his fastball got up to 97 mph during this outing. The hope is that he feels good after this game and can continue on schedule for the rest of the spring. It sounds like Kaprielian should be able to be part of the Opening Day roster. Kaprielian has the potential to be a consistent option, but is more of a deep league target in fantasy leagues right now.

Thu Mar 2 202320:18James Kaprielian Throws On Thursday
Oakland Athletics starting pitcher James Kaprielian (shoulder) threw a two-inning simulated game on Thursday. This is the second time that Kaprielian has faced live hitters this spring. He threw 30 pitches in this one and mentioned he is hopeful to be ready in time for Opening Day. The 29-year-old is coming off surgery to repair the AC joint in his right shoulder. Kaprielian is hopeful to make his Cactus League debut sometime this next week. Kaprielian showed some nice flashes last season, but is more of a deep league option.

Sat Feb 25 202320:45James Kaprielian To Face Live Hitters On Sunday
Oakland Athletics starting pitcher James Kaprielian (shoulder) is scheduled to face live hitters on Sunday. The right-hander is set to throw a 20-pitch live batting practice session as he works his way back from offseason surgery. Manager Mark Kotsay mentioned Kaprielian will throw at least one more batting practice session before getting into spring training action. The 28-year-old underwent surgery to repair the AC joint in his right shoulder during the offseason. He should be able to get fully healthy in time for Opening Day. Kaprielian is more of a deep league option, but possibly he improves in 2023.

Fri Jan 27 202318:31James Kaprielian, Paul Blackburn Expected To Be Ready
The Oakland Athletics expect starting pitchers James Kaprielian (shoulder) and Paul Blackburn (finger) to be ready for spring training, according to general manager David Forst. It's the reason the team felt comfortable trading left-hander Cole Irvin to the Baltimore Orioles this week. Kaprielian had surgery to fix the AC joint in his right-shoulder in the offseason. The 28-year-old figures to be a fixture in the A's rotation after posting a 4.23 ERA (4.63 FIP), 1.34 WHIP and 17 percent strikeout rate in a career-high 26 starts in his third MLB season in 2022. Blackburn was excellent for Oakland before a finger caused him to be shut down in July. The 29-year-old was an All-Star last for the first time last year and went 7-6 with a 4.28 ERA (4.21 FIP), 1.26 WHIP and career-high 19.1 percent strikeout rate in a career-high 21 starts in his sixth season in Oakland.

Fri Sep 9 202218:36James Kaprielian Scratched From Start Friday
Oakland Athletics starting pitcher James Kaprielian (finger) has been scratched from his start Friday against the Los Angeles Angels with a middle right finger laceration. Kaprielian was set to make his return to the Athletics rotation after getting bumped out of it last week, but won't make his start after cutting a finger on his pitching hand. It is not yet known if the Athletics plan to start him later in the weekend or if he will be skipped. The 28-year-old had a tough go of it in August, posting a 1-4 record, 5.59 ERA, and 1.79 WHIP over 29 IP. Still, he could have been a somewhat appealing streaming candidate in deeper leagues against a bad Angels lineup. Alas, the Athletics will instead have a bullpen game on Friday, with Austin Pruitt opening.

Thu Sep 1 202211:56James Kaprielian Loses Ninth Game
Oakland Athletics starting pitcher James Kaprielian was hit with his ninth loss of the season in Wednesday's 5-1 defeat at the hands of the Washington Nationals. Kaprielian allowed five runs (two earned) on seven hits while walking one and striking out three in 5 2/3 innings of work. It was the 28-year-old's fourth straight losing decision, and he'll be happy to flip the calendar to September, as he finished the month of August with a 5.59 ERA, 1.79 WHIP, 23 strikeouts and 17 walks in 29 innings over his six starts. In 22 starts in 2022, the right-hander has a 3-9 record, 4.79 ERA (5.20 FIP), 1.42 WHIP, 76 strikeouts and 52 walks in 109 innings in his third major league season.

Sat May 7 202213:14James Kaprielian Starting Saturday
Oakland Athletics starting pitcher James Kaprielian will start vs. the Minnesota Twins on Saturday. Kaprielian was taken off the IL last week and had a rough start against the Cleveland Guardians on May 1st when he allowed four earned runs across just two innings pitched. Kaprielian had an up-and-down 2021 in which he posted a 4.07 ERA with a 9.82 K/9 across 119 1/3 innings pitched. He is not recommended as a streaming or DFS option today as the Twins are currently posting a 135 wRC+ mark against right-handed pitching over the previous two weeks, but he is someone to keep an eye on moving forward.

Sun May 1 202212:34James Kaprielian Activated And Starting On Sunday
The Oakland Athletics activated starting pitcher James Kaprielian (shoulder) from the injured list on Sunday in order for him to make his season debut against the Cleveland Guardians. No. 5 starter Adam Oller was optioned to Triple-A Las Vegas in a corresponding move. In three rehab starts in the minors for Las Vegas and Single-A Stockton, Kaprielian allowed 11 earned runs on 15 hits (three home runs) while walking five and striking out 13 in 13 2/3 innings. The 28-year-old right-hander didn't go more than four innings or 84 pitches in those rehab starts, either, so he'll likely be on a relatively short leash in his return to the majors. Despite the good matchup against Cleveland, Kaprielian will be a risky fantasy option in his season debut Sunday.

Wed Apr 27 202209:02James Kaprielian Gives Up Five Runs In Rehab Outing
Oakland Athletics right-handed pitcher James Kaprielian (shoulder) was roughed up in his rehab outing at Triple-A on Wednesday. He pitched four innings and allowed three hits, four walks and five earned runs while recording two strikeouts. He also hit a batter in the game. Kaprielian was sidelined with right shoulder inflammation this spring and he is in the midst of working his way back. This was his third rehab outing and his second consecutive one at Triple-A. His previous Triple-A start was also a rough one as he allowed nine hits and four earned runs over 4 2/3 innings. We may still see him make one more rehab outing before joining the A's and it's unclear whether he will have a spot in the rotation or if he will be pitching out of the bullpen for the club this year.

Mon Apr 18 202221:31James Kaprielian Will Make Next Rehab Start On Wednesday
Oakland A's right-hander James Kaprielian (shoulder) will make his next rehab start for Triple-A Las Vegas on Wednesday. Kaprielian was placed on the injured list at the start of the season after dealing with AC joint irritation during spring training. He made one previous rehab start last week with Low-A Stockton and allowed two runs over five innings of work. Kaprielian could be ticketed for a return to the Oakland starting rotation if his rehab appearance on Wednesday goes smoothly. The 28-year-old posted an 8-5 record with a 4.07 ERA with 123 strikeouts over 119 1/3 innings of work during the 2021 season.

Sat Apr 16 202210:39James Kaprielian Looks Good In Rehab Start
Oakland Athletics starting pitcher James Kaprielian (shoulder) looked good in his first rehab start on Friday for Low-A Stockton, allowing two earned runs and three hits while striking out six in five innings pitched. Kaprielian allowed two home runs but threw 41 of his 52 pitches for strikes. The 28-year-old right-hander is expected to make his next rehab start at a higher minor league affiliate sometime next week. Barring any setbacks along the way, he should be able to enter the A's starting rotation and make his season debut later this month. In 24 appearances (21 starts) in his second major league season last year, Kaprielian had a 4.07 ERA and 1.22 WHIP with 123 K's and 41 walks in 119 1/3 innings.

Thu Apr 14 202211:25James Kaprielian To Begin Rehab Assignment Friday
Oakland Athletics starting pitcher James Kaprielian (shoulder) is scheduled to pitch for Low-A Stockton in a rehab outing on Friday, his first rehab start as he builds back up from spring shoulder irritation, according to manager Mark Kotsay. Kaprielian threw 45 pitches in a simulated game in Arizona on Sunday and was excited about the throwing session. If the 28-year-old right-hander can avoid any setbacks, he could make his season debut before the end of April. Kaprielian was solid for the A's last year, sporting a 4.07 ERA, 1.22 WHIP, 123 strikeouts and 41 walks in 119 1/3 innings over 24 outings (21 starts).

Tue Apr 12 202208:28James Kaprielian Has A Successful Sim Game
Oakland Athletics pitcher James Kaprielian (shoulder) took part in a simulation game at one of the team's minor league complexes on Sunday. The right-hander threw 45 pitches and both Kaprielian and A's manager Mark Kotsay were happy with the results. Kotsay told the media, "Kap's right on track," and deemed Sunday "a good day." The 28-year-old was diagnosed with AC joint inflammation in his right shoulder this spring and he was placed on the injured list to open the season. He is scheduled to pitch again on Friday. If he continues to progress without any setbacks, we could see him make his 2022 debut in late April.

Tue Sep 21 202121:59James Kaprielian Likely Moving To Bullpen
Oakland Athletics right-hander James Kaprielian looks to be the odd man out of the rotation after Chris Bassitt (head) returns from the injured list on Thursday, according to manager Bob Melvin. It's not set in stone yet, and it depends on how Bassitt looks once he's back on the mound. Kaprielian is having a solid first full season in the majors, posting an 8-5 record and 3.80 ERA over 21 starts and 111.1 innings. The peripherals don't look as nice, though, as he's struck out 24.2% of the batters he's faced along with an 8.6 BB% and 17 HRs allowed. Still, he's been a good starter in many leagues, and this isn't the news that fantasy managers wanted to hear.

Sun Sep 19 202110:36James Kaprielian Fires Six Scoreless Innings In Surprise Start
Oakland Athletics starting pitcher James Kaprielian earned his eighth win of the season on Saturday night with six shutout innings versus the Angels. Where did that come from? Kaprielian had struggled mightily prior to this start as he had an ERA of 6.51 since July 27 and it was announced he would transition to a bullpen role. Daulton Jefferies was slated to make this start, but he was scratched with an elbow injury earlier in the day. Perhaps Kaprielian didn't overthink this start as it came as a surprise, perhaps he just dominated a weak Angels lineup, but either way, it was an encouraging outing from the 27-year-old rookie. Despite one good start, Kaprielian remains a high-risk fantasy option moving forward. He's scheduled to face the Mariners on Thursday.

Fri Sep 17 202112:47Daulton Jefferies To Start Saturday, James Kaprielian To 'Pen
Oakland Athletics starting pitcher James Kaprielian will transition to a bullpen role with Daulton Jefferies making the start on Saturday versus the Angels, according to Matt Kawahara of the San Francisco Chronicle. Kaprielian had a strong first half for Oakland, but he's hit a wall recently, pitching to a 6.51 ERA since July 27. The rookie right-hander had pitched more than double the innings he threw in both 2019 and 2020 so perhaps fatigue set in and a move to the bullpen could help Kaprielian as the A's battle for a Wild Card spot. Jefferies is an intriguing prospect, but he's made just one start this season and doesn't figure to go deep into the game on Saturday, making him a desperation streamer in the deepest of fantasy leagues. Kaprielian is droppable in redraft leagues.
