Fri Mar 1519:27Paul DeJong Plays Long Ball Friday
Chicago White Sox shortstop Paul DeJong slugged his third homer of the spring as part of a 3-2 win over the Chicago Cubs in Cactus League action on Friday. Signed to a one-year deal by the White Sox this offseason, DeJong is up to a .297 average with 13 RBI and a stolen base to go along with his three homers, producing a .928 OPS in the process. While the strong spring numbers are encouraging, DeJong has fallen off a cliff at the plate in recent seasons. Last season, he hit just .207 with 14 home runs and four stolen bases across 112 games between the Cardinals, Blue Jays, and Giants a season ago. He should begin the season as the club's everyday shortstop but prospect Colson Montgomery should take over at some point this season.

Tue Nov 21 202318:32Paul DeJong Agrees With White Sox
Free-agent infielder Paul DeJong agreed to an undisclosed one-year deal with the Chicago White Sox on Tuesday, pending a physical, according to a source. The rebuilding White Sox are taking a cheap flier on a former All-Star. The 30-year-old right-handed-hitting DeJong made the National League All-Star team in 2019 with the St. Louis Cardinals, when he hit .233/.318/.444 with a career-high 30 home runs, 78 RBI and nine stolen bases in 159 games. He hasn't even reached the 20-homer mark since then. In 112 contests with the St. Louis Cardinals, Toronto Blue Jays and San Francisco Giants in 2023, he went 77-for-372 (.207) with 14 homers, 38 RBI, 13 doubles, four stolen bases and 41 runs scored in 400 plate appearances. DeJong can provide a bit of pop but will certainly be a batting-average drain as a middle infield platoon option in deep-mixed and AL-only fantasy leagues.

Thu Sep 21 202321:24Paul DeJong Released Thursday
The San Francisco Giants placed shortstop Paul DeJong on unconditional release waivers on Thursday and recalled infielders Marco Luciano and Tyler Fitzgerald from Triple-A Sacramento in corresponding moves. Brandon Crawford (hamstring) also went on the 10-day injured list and won't return this year, so expect Luciano and Fitzgerald to split time at the 6 for the Gigantes the rest of the way. The 30-year-old DeJong spent time with the Giants, St. Louis Cardinals and Toronto Blue Jays in 2023, but he wasn't good in any of those stops, hitting a combined .226 (74-for-328) with 14 home runs, 37 RBI, four steals and 41 runs scored in 112 games. In just 18 games in San Francisco, he went 9-for-49 (.184) with a homer, five RBI and two runs scored.

Wed Aug 23 202321:49Paul DeJong Puts Together Strong Team Debut
San Francisco Giants shortstop Paul DeJong made his team debut versus the Philadelphia Phillies on Wednesday. The Giants signed the 30-year-old after he was designated for assignment by the Toronto Blue Jays. DeJong has struggled throughout a majority of the season, but put on a show during Wednesday's game. The right-handed slugger blasted a 400-foot home run in the fourth inning. He would follow that up with a pair of singles throughout the rest of the game. DeJong would finish his day 3-for-5 with four RBI in the win over Philly. DeJong has bad numbers on the season, but possibly a move to San Francisco will help spark his bat.

Wed Aug 23 202314:39Paul DeJong Making Giants Debut Wednesday
San Francisco Giants shortstop Paul DeJong will make his team debut Wednesday out of the nine-hole versus Philadelphia Phillies right-hander Michael Lorenzen. The Giants signed the veteran to a major league deal on Tuesday after he was designated for assignment by the Toronto Blue Jays as the club needed help up the middle with shortstop Brandon Crawford hitting the injured list with a forearm injury. DeJong enjoyed a solid bounce-back season with the Cardinals in 2023, hitting 13 homers alongside a .710 OPS across 81 games but fell off a cliff after being acquired by the Blue Jays at the trade deadline, going just 3-for-44 with 18 strikeouts and zero walks across 13 contests.

Tue Aug 22 202316:10Giants Sign Paul DeJong To Big-League Deal
The San Francisco Giants signed free-agent shortstop Paul DeJong to an undisclosed major-league deal on Tuesday, and he will join the team on Wednesday. DeJong began the 2023 campaign with the St. Louis Cardinals before being traded to the Toronto Blue Jays at the trade deadline earlier this month. Toronto released him on Monday, but it didn't take the 30-year-old veteran long to find a new home. The Jays cut him after he went 3-for-44 (.068) with 18 strikeouts in 13 games for them. Overall this year, he's hitting .211 (68-for-323) with 13 homers, 33 RBI, four steals and 39 runs scored in 94 games with the Cardinals and Jays. DeJong should at least see semi-regular playing time at the 6 in San Francisco as the Giants look for an upgrade over the struggling Brandon Crawford (forearm), who went on the injured list on Sunday.

Wed Aug 2 202317:05Paul DeJong Hitting Eighth In Blue Jays Debut
Toronto Blue Jays shortstop Paul DeJong, who was acquired from the St. Louis Cardinals at Tuesday's trade deadline, will start at shortstop and bat eighth in his debut with the team on Wednesday against Baltimore Orioles rookie right-hander Grayson Rodriguez. Toronto just placed Bo Bichette (knee) on the injured list on Wednesday, so DeJong figures to see regular playing time at the 6 until Bichette rejoins the big-league team. Bichette isn't expected to miss extended time, so DeJong's stay as the starting shortstop could be short-lived. The 30-year-old is hitting just .233/.297/.412 on the year, but he has some pop (13 home runs) and could be a nice short-term play in fantasy with an upgrade in lineup with the move from St. Louis to Toronto.

Tue Aug 1 202313:46Blue Jays Acquire Paul DeJong From Cardinals
The Toronto Blue Jays have acquired infielder Paul DeJong from the St. Louis Cardinals, according to Katie Woo of The Athletic. St. Louis was rumored to be exploring trades of many infielders, and DeJong is the first to go. Interestingly enough, this is the second trade between the Cardinals and Blue Jays in the last week; closer Jordan Hicks was also sent north of the border. DeJong should have an immediate role in Toronto after shortstop Bo Bichette left last night's game with a knee injury. He played 81 games for the Cardinals this year, slashing .233/.297/.412 with 13 homers, 6.9 BB%, and 28.4 K%. The 29-year-old is an above-average defender with 9.0 dWAR and 8.0 OAA in 2023. With that said, he lacks fantasy appeal for the time being.

Wed Apr 5 202318:41Paul DeJong To Begin Rehab Assignment On Thursday
St. Louis Cardinals shortstop Paul DeJong (back) will begin a minor league rehab assignment on Thursday. The right-handed slugger landed on the injured list to begin the season due to back soreness. The organization doesn't believe that DeJong is going to require a lengthy rehab assignment, but back issues can sometimes be difficult. Once he returns, Taylor Motter or Alec Burleson will likely end up in the minor leagues. Fantasy managers will have to check back for another update on DeJong.

Wed Jul 20 202220:55Paul DeJong Named International League Player Of The Week
St. Louis Cardinals shortstop Paul DeJong was named the International League Player of the Week on Tuesday. He led all International League hitters with three home runs, 11 RBI, and seven runs scored while posting a 1.273 OPS across six games. The Cardinals optioned DeJong to Triple-A Memphis on May 10. Since being demoted, the 28-year-old is slashing .236/.300/.511 with 14 homers, 47 RBI, 33 runs, and a stolen base in 46 games with Triple-A Memphis. He could be promoted later this summer if the Cardinals need infield depth. DeJong is a name for fantasy managers to keep an eye on in deep-league formats when he eventually returns to the big leagues. Edmundo Sosa, Tommy Edman, and Brendan Donovan continue to handle shortstop duties while DeJong is in the minors.

Tue May 10 202215:50Cardinals Send Paul DeJong To Triple-A
The St. Louis Cardinals optioned shortstop Paul DeJong to Triple-A Memphis on Tuesday, according to sources. The former All-Star was hitting just .130 with a .417 OPS over 77 at-bats to begin the season. Tommy Edman is expected to move to shortstop in the interim, at least until Edmundo Sosa is done with his minor league rehab assignment as he recovers from COVID-19. DeJong had a career-high 30 home runs in 2019, but he has regressed ever since and currently has a career-worst 29.1% strikeout rate. With Edman moving to shortstop temporarily, Brendan Donovan should get the first look at the keystone for St. Louis. Hopefully for those that have DeJong rostered in deeper formats, it won't be long before he regains some confidence at the plate and returns to the majors.

Tue Mar 22 202200:48Paul DeJong Expected To Regain Shortstop Job
St. Louis Cardinals shortstop Paul DeJong is expected to earn the Opening Day job, with new manager Oliver Marmol saying the starting shortstop job is his "to lose." Lose it is exactly what he did last season due to injuries and extended slumps, with Edmundo Sosa overtaking him in the second half of the season. DeJong will get the chance to start, but he may not see an extended look, as Sosa was somewhat effective in his opportunity, while DeJong has just a .673 OPS over the past two seasons.

Fri Sep 3 202119:17Paul DeJong Isn't Starting Friday
St. Louis Cardinals shortstop Paul DeJong is on the bench for a Friday matchup with the Milwaukee Brewers and right-handed starter Freddy Peralta. DeJong is hitting .198 with a .289 on-base percentage, 16 home runs, and three stolen bases in 349 plate appearances this season. He'll be replaced in the lineup by Edmundo Sosa. Sosa, who is batting seventh against the Brewers, is hitting .274 in 249 plate appearances. He's also posted a .352 on-base percentage, four home runs, and three stolen bases. The 25-year-old could be worth a look as a streaming option on Friday for fantasy managers in deeper leagues where on-base percentage is part of the scoring.

Sat Aug 21 202118:08Paul DeJong Not Starting Saturday
St. Louis Cardinals shortstop Paul DeJong will begin Saturday's game on the bench. DeJong is hitting .201 with a .292 on-base percentage, 16 home runs, and three stolen bases in 332 plate appearances this season. He's getting the day off with Edmundo Sosa stepping at shortstop against the Pittsburgh Pirates and left-handed starter Dillon Peters. Sosa is batting seventh against Peters. The 25-year-old is hitting .257 with a .327 on-base percentage in 213 plate appearances this season. He's also collected three home runs and three stolen bases. You're probably better off looking elsewhere for streaming help on Saturday.

Tue Aug 17 202115:06Paul DeJong Out Of Lineup Again
St. Louis Cardinals shortstop Paul DeJong is once again not in the lineup Tuesday against the Milwaukee Brewers. Edmundo Sosa will take DeJong's spot and bat eighth. DeJong has missed the past two games for an undisclosed reason. He is having another down year this season, slashing .201/.288/.396 with 16 HRs and three stolen bases. He is still a deep-league option as he should hit at least 20 HRs if he isn't out for extended time. Hopefully, fantasy managers will learn more about his absence soon.

Sun Aug 15 202111:50Paul DeJong On Bench Again Against Royals
St. Louis Cardinals shortstop Paul DeJong is out of the starting lineup Sunday against the Kansas City Royals and left-hander Kris Bubic. Rookie outfielder Lars Nootbaar is in right field and batting sixth, while Andrew Knizner is catching and hitting ninth for the Cards. DeJong, who is slashing .201/.288/.396 this season, was scratched from Saturday's lineup for undisclosed reasons, according to MLB.com. He's been a fantasy disappointment in 2021 but the career .243 hitter could perk up in the last month and half if he gets regular playing time. Check back for updates.
