Tue Mar 15 202221:01Rays Bringing Back Cody Reed
The Tampa Bay Rays have re-signed relief pitcher Cody Reed to a minor league contract. The club also invited the left-handed pitcher to Spring Training. Reed pitched just 9.2 innings for the Rays last year and posted a 3.72 ERA and a 1.448 WHIP with seven strikeouts. The 28-year-old will likely be one of many Rays relievers filtered up and down between Triple-A and the majors next year, but he's not someone likely to see high-leverage innings for the Rays at any point in the season.

Fri Apr 16 202102:28Ramírez helps Indians bounce back, beat White Sox 4-2
CHICAGO (AP) — Slumping slugger José Ramírez connected for a go-ahead, two-run homer off Lance Lynn in the sixth inning and the Cleveland Indians bounced back from being no-hit, beating the Chicago White Sox 4-2 on Thursday. After Carlos Rodón just missed a perfect game Wednesday night, there was a different kind of tension this time as the benches emptied in the bottom of the first. Adam Eaton singled and tried to advance when Indians right fielder Josh Naylor threw to third, hoping to get the lead runner. Eaton arrived ahead of the throw back to second, but was called out when his hand came off the bag while shortstop Andrés Giménez stood his ground and held the tag. Eaton grabbed Giménez’s leg, began barking and then pushed Giménez in the chest with two hands. Indians starter Aaron Civale plunked Eaton with a pitch in the upper arm in the third. Civale (3-0) allowed only a run — in the first — and five hits through six innings in his third straight strong start. Nick Wittgren and James... [More]

Fri Sep 18 202018:32Rays OF Meadows placed on injured list; could miss playoffs
BALTIMORE (AP) — Tampa Bay Rays outfielder Austin Meadows was placed on the 10-day injured list Friday with an oblique strain that will keep him sidelined into the postseason. The injury occurred while Meadows took a swing in the opener of Thursday's doubleheader against the Orioles. The Rays won both games to earn a berth in the AL playoffs, and they'll need a deep run to get Meadows back in the lineup. “We’re going to have to play really, really well to see him at any point the rest of the season," manager Kevin Cash said. Meadows is batting .205 with four homers and 13 RBIs. Last year he hit .291 with 33 home runs and 89 RBIs, so his bat is always welcome in the Tampa Bay lineup. “I don’t need to talk about how important Austin is," Cash said. To fill the roster spot, Tampa Bay selected left-hander Sean Gilmartin from its alternate site. In order to add Gilmartin to the 40-man roster, the Rays transferred pitcher Cody Reed (left pinky irritation) to the 45-day IL, ending his season.... [More]
Fri Aug 28 202023:07Yarbrough pitches into the 7th as Rays beat Marlins 2-0
MIAMI (AP) — Rays veteran Ryan Yarbrough and top Marlins prospect Sixto Sanchez matched zeroes into the seventh inning Friday night, with one difference.“He was throwing 100, and I wasn’t,” Yarbrough said. “A nice little contrast there.”There was also a contrast in bullpen performances. Yarbrough and two relievers combined on a five-hitter, and AL East leader Tampa Bay won its third game in a row by scratching out runs in the eighth and ninth to beat Miami 2-0. The 22-year-old Sanchez struck out 10 in seven scoreless innings in his second major league start, but the Rays broke through in the eighth when Yandy Diaz delivered a two-out RBI single. Michael Perez, a late addition to the Rays lineup, added a two-out run-scoring single in the ninth. Both teams were back on the field to start the series on Jackie Robinson Day after declining to play games Thursday in protest against racial injustice. The crafty Yarbrough threw mostly in the 80s, but blanked Miami for 6 2/3 innings before leaving... Wed Jul 29 202002:36Benches clear in testy rematch as Dodgers beat Astros 5-2
HOUSTON (AP) — Benches cleared Tuesday night during the Dodgers’ 5-2 victory over the Astros in the first game between the teams since it was revealed that Houston illegally stole signs en route to a 2017 championship that came at Los Angeles’ expense in the World Series. The fracas occurred after Dodgers reliever Joe Kelly threw high-and-tight pitches to Astros stars Alex Bregman and Carlos Correa in the sixth inning. Kelly threw an errant breaking ball over Correa’s head. Correa, who homered and finished with three hits, took off his batting helmet and stared Kelly down before continuing the at-bat. Kelly struck out Correa, then stuck out his tongue and made a face in his direction. Correa started walking toward him and the players exchanged words, prompting the benches to clear in the first such incident of this pandemic-delayed season. There was plenty of yelling and crowding — outlawed as MLB tries to play a 60-game season amid the pandemic — but no pushing or punches thrown.Order was... [More]
