Tue Mar 1912:19Blue Jays Name Jose Berrios As Opening Day Starter
Toronto Blue Jays manager John Schneider announced on Tuesday morning that right-hander Jose Berrios will make the team's Opening Day start on March 28 on the road against the Tampa Bay Rays. "He embodies what we're talking about when we talk about stuff, durability, teammate, professionalism. I was thrilled to give him that news this morning," Schneider said. Berrios gets the nod with ace Kevin Gausman (shoulder) working through shoulder issues in spring training. It won't be the easiest matchup for DFS purposes against Toronto's American League East rival on the road. The 29-year-old Puerto Rican hurler had a solid year in 2023 in his second year in Toronto, going 11-12 with a 3.65 ERA and 1.19 WHIP with 52 walks and 184 K's in 32 starts. Berrios isn't as intriguing as he once was in fantasy, but he still has a solid floor as a back-end starter.

Tue Mar 516:38Jose Berrios Tosses Three Scoreless Frames Tuesday
Toronto Blue Jays right-hander Jose Berrios was in fine form on Tuesday as he tossed three scoreless innings while allowing two hits and one walk against three strikeouts. It was his second outing of the spring and the veteran has yet to allow an earned run in five innings as he looks to build off an encouraging 2023 season, his second with the Blue Jays. The 29-year-old bounced back from a tough 2022 season and worked to a 3.65 ERA alongside a healthy 16.9% K-BB% across 32 starts. While he hasn't been elite throughout his eight-year MLB career, Berrios provides a solid floor and has been fully healthy throughout his career. He has posted an ERA of 3.89 or better in five of his last seven seasons and he rarely self inflicts harm thanks to a solid 7.1% career BB%.

Mon Oct 2 202322:25Jose Berrios To Start Game 2 Against Twins
Toronto Blue Jays right-hander Jose Berrios will start Game 2 of the wild-card series against his former team, the Minnesota Twins, on Wednesday. Right-hander Kevin Gausman will kick off the series on Tuesday in Game 1. The 29-year-old Berrios is coming into the playoffs looking to rebound after allowing eight earned runs on 12 hits (two homers) while walking three and striking out 16 in 11 2/3 innings in his last two starts of the regular season, both against the New York Yankees. In his lone start against Minnesota this year way back on May 28, Berrios got the win when he threw 5 2/3 scoreless innings while striking out five, but he also walked five batters. The Puerto Rican hurler went 11-12 on the year with a 3.65 ERA, 1.19 WHIP and 184 strikeouts in 189 2/3 frames over 32 starts.

Thu Sep 21 202314:10Jose Berrios Aiming To Take Down Division Rival Thursday
Toronto Blue Jays pitcher Jose Berrios will take aim at a division rival Thursday night when he takes on the New York Yankees in the Bronx. It's yet another crucial game for the Blue Jays, who have won five in a row, as they sit in the second Wild Card spot in the American League but remain just a single game ahead of both the Texas Rangers and Seattle Mariners. The right-hander has enjoyed a nice bounce-back season, working to a 3.49 ERA across 30 starts while he is coming off of a seven-inning shutout effort over the Red Sox his last time out. Berrios tossed six innings of three-run ball in his lone start against the Yankees this season but also owns a 5.52 ERA across six career starts at Yankee Stadium.

Thu Aug 24 202318:13Jose Berrios Looks To Keep Up Dominance Against Orioles
The Toronto Blue Jays and starting pitcher Jose Berrios look to take the rubber match of a three-game series against the Baltimore Orioles on Thursday. The 29-year-old has assembled quite the rebound campaign after allowing more hits (199) and earned runs (100) than any other American League hurler in 2022. Berrios brings into this one a solid 3.39 ERA, 1.21 WHIP, and 140 strikeouts in 146 innings this season, but he has been excellent versus Baltimore in the past. The right-hander is undefeated (10-0) with a 2.66 ERA, 1.06 WHIP, and 72 punchouts in 84 2/3 career frames opposing the O's. Season-long fantasy managers should be deploying Berrios in starting lineups despite what seems to be a difficult matchup.

Fri Aug 18 202321:41Jose Berrios Takes No-Decision In Loss
Toronto Blue Jays starting pitcher Jose Berrios pitched 5 2/3 innings of one-hit baseball against the Cincinnati Reds Friday night, allowing zero runs while walking four. He struck out eight and tallied 61 strikes over 100 pitches. Berrios has been helpful in the strikeout and ERA departments over his last seven starts but owns a 1.39 WHIP over that time, indicating he may be getting luckier than his 3.08 ERA shows.

Sun Jul 30 202317:41Jose Berrios Turns In A Strong Six Inning Outing Against Angels
Toronto Blue Jays starting pitcher Jose Berrios hurled six frames allowing just one earned run versus the Angels on Sunday. Despite fanning six Los Angeles batters, his teammates didn't help at the plate producing just two runs in a 3-2 extra-inning loss. Unfortunately, the 29-year-old had to settle with a no-decision. This season the right-hander has posted an 8-7 record and a 3.31 ERA in just over 131 innings thrown. It is also worth noting that Berrios has struck out 123 opposing batters in 22 outings.

Sat Jul 15 202300:36Jose Berrios Gives Up One Earned Run In A No-Decision Outing
Toronto Blue Jays starting hurler Jose Berrios pitched well against the Diamondbacks, although he did not factor into the decision. Berrios surrendered just one run on seven hits throughout 5 1/3 innings on the mound. The 29-year-old walked only one batter while striking out four. With this outing, he now boasts a record of 8-6 with a 3.41 ERA and a 1.16 WHIP. Berrios has had a commendable bounce-back season thus far. His next start will be against San Diego on Thursday.

Thu Jun 8 202315:00Jose Berrios Aims To Keep Cruising On Thursday
Toronto Blue Jays pitcher Jose Berrios will look to continue his recent dominance Thursday when he takes on the visiting Houston Astros. The veteran right-hander has surrendered just a pair of earned runs over his last three starts spanning 18 2/3 innings of work. He's allowed three earned runs or less in each of his last six starts and two earned runs or fewer in five of those six outings. The excellent stretch has lowered the 29-year-old's season-long ERA to 3.66 while he also sports a 3.71 FIP and 4.04 SIERA while limiting walks to just 7.5% of the hitters he's faced. He'll have his hands full against an Astros lineup that had heated up of late, ranking ninth with a .339 wOBA over the last two weeks.

Fri May 19 202312:22Jose Berrios Strikes Out Eight In Loss
Toronto Blue Jays starting pitcher Jose Berrios took the loss to the New York Yankees in Thursday's 4-2 defeat, but he struck out eight batters and walked just one in 6 2/3 innings. Berrios surrendered three runs on six hits (one home run) for the quality start. The effort was the 28-year-old right-hander's fourth quality start of the year, and he's been pretty solid for his fantasy managers since a rough outing against the Kansas City Royals in his first start of the season. In nine starts overall, he's gone 3-4 with a 4.61 ERA (3.60 FIP), 1.25 WHIP, 12 walks and 52 strikeouts in 52 2/3 innings. Fantasy managers would be ecstatic if Berrios can pull off another quality start in his next scheduled outing in a tough matchup against the first-place Tampa Bay Rays.

Thu May 18 202314:35Jose Berrios Looks To Continue Wave Of Strong Starts Thursday
Toronto Blue Jays pitcher Jose Berrios will look to stay in a groove Thursday when he takes on the New York Yankees in search of a series split. The right-hander has surrendered two earned runs or less in five of his last six starts as he continues to drive his ERA down toward his peripheral figures. While he still owns a 4.70 ERA on the season, Berrios also sports a 3.59 FIP, 3.78 SIERA, and a quality 17.1% K-BB% that combine to paint a prettier picture than his surface ERA suggests. Berrios has also turned in a 1.53 ERA in 17 2/3 innings at home this season versus a 6.67 figure across 28 1/3 frames on the road. He makes for a fine option on a small slate Thursday despite taking on a potent Yankees offense.

Sun May 7 202309:01Jose Berrios Strikes Out Seven In Third Victory
Toronto Blue Jays pitcher Jose Berrios gave up only two runs in 6.1 innings on his way to earning his third win on Saturday versus the Pirates. The 28-year-old punched out seven in the contest and has now encouragingly yielded two runs or less in four of his last five starts. His 4.91 ERA suggests he hasn't been particularly sharp overall, but a decent 1.24 WHIP implies Berrios has perhaps underachieved to a degree. A 41/8 K/BB ratio also indicates a rather strong balance for the two-time all-star, but Berrios braces now for a daunting tentative schedule forthcoming. The right-hander will face the Braves next, and then lines up against the Yankees and Rays to follow. Berrios, a popular buy-low fantasy asset entering the year, perhaps warrants sell-high consideration ahead of this difficult stretch.

Wed Apr 19 202311:35Jose Berrios Looking To Build On Last Start On Wednesday
Toronto Blue Jays starting pitcher Jose Berrios is scheduled to start Wednesday's game against Luis Garcia and the Houston Astros. After earning his first victory of the season in his last start, when he went five innings allowing one run and striking out six, he'll try to keep that momentum going. Overall, Berrios hasn't had much success across his three appearances, posting a 7.98 ERA and 1.50 WHIP. However, the right-hander owns a 27.7% strikeout rate, 4.6% walk rate, and a 2.36 FIP, so fantasy managers looking for a buy-low option can turn to the 28-year-old.

Wed Sep 28 202215:09Jose Berrios Struggles Tuesday Against Yankees
Toronto Blue Jays starter Jose Berrios struggled in his latest outing on Tuesday, surrendering nine hits, five earned runs and a pair of walks in 5 1/3 innings of work against the New York Yankees. The veteran didn't allow a home run and did strike out seven while logging 12 swinging strikes and a strong 39% CSW rate, but he allowed too many base runners. In 31 starts spanning 166 innings this season, Berrios has turned in a 5.37 ERA, a 5.24 FIP, 144 strikeouts and 42 walks. He's logged a win in 11 of those 31 starts.

Tue Aug 30 202200:33Jose Berrios Delivers Mediocre Start Monday
Toronto Blue Jays starting pitcher Jose Berrios turned in an OK start in Monday's 5-4 extra-innings win over the Cubs. Berrios pitched 5 2/3 innings, allowing four runs on 10 hits and a walk with four strikeouts. The 28-year-old has been one of fantasy's bigger disappointments this season and now has a 9-5 record with a 5.32 ERA through 26 starts. Fantasy managers who have stuck with Berrios have probably already been picking and choosing their matchups carefully, but he does draw a strong matchup in his next start at the Pirates.

Fri Aug 19 202200:31Jose Berrios Strikes Out Nine In Victory
Toronto Blue Jays starting pitcher Jose Berrios struck out nine batters on Thursday as his club defeated the Yankees 9-2 from the Bronx. The right-hander allowed two runs (one earned) on six hits and a walk over 6 2/3 innings as he improved his record to 9-5 on the season. Berrios gave up both his runs in the third frame after he led the inning off with a walk, hit-by-pitch, and then a throwing error of his own, but thankfully he was able to limit the damage. Berrios has had his ups and downs in 2022 as he sits with a 5.39 ERA and 1.37 WHIP on the year, but managers will still want to roll him out in his next start versus the Red Sox next week.

Sat Aug 6 202201:35Jose Berrios Knocked Out In Fourth Inning
Toronto Blue Jays starting pitcher Jose Berrios couldn't escape the fourth inning on Friday, giving up five runs on six hits and two walks in 3 2/3 innings. He struck out one batter. This outing breaks a streak of six starts in which Berrios allowed three earned runs or less. He now has an 8-4 record with a 5.19 ERA, 1.35 WHIP, and 107 strikeouts in 118 innings across 22 starts this year. It's been a disappointing campaign for the right-hander, and for the fantasy managers who are invested in him.

Wed Jul 6 202221:13Jose Berrios Notches Quality Start On Wednesday
Toronto Blue Jays starter Jose Berrios completed six innings of work while giving up one run to earn the quality start against the Oakland Athletics on Wednesday. He struck out six, walked one, and allowed four hits on the day but didn't earn the win. Berrios is now 6-4 with a 5.44 ERA and 1.39 WHIP while also striking out 73 across 89.1 innings pitched. It's been a very inconsistent season, and an impressive start against the lowly Athletics doesn't mean the 28-year-old's turned things around.

Tue Jun 21 202215:10Jose Berrios Struggles Against The White Sox
Toronto Blue Jays starting pitcher Jose Berrios allowed nine hits and six earned runs in four innings against the Chicago White Sox in his most recent start on Monday. The veteran also allowed three home runs and a walk while registering a strikeout. It was an unideal start for Berrios, who had previously pitched to a 2.45 ERA, a 3.22 FIP, and a pair of wins in his last three starts spanning 22 innings. He only registered two singing strikes and a CSW rate of 19% against Chicago. For the season, the 28-year-old owns a 5.11 ERA, a 4.91 FIP, 63 strikeouts, and 18 walks in 75.2 innings of work.

Thu Jun 16 202213:31Jose Berrios Goes Seven Strong Innings Wednesday
Toronto Blue Jays starting pitcher Jose Berrios threw seven strong innings against the Baltimore Orioles Wednesday, allowing three runs on three hits and no walks while striking out eight batters. He was deprived of the win when the bullpen blew the lead in the top of the eighth inning. Berrios has now gone at least seven innings in all three of his June starts, and has delivered quality starts in five of his last six trips to the mound. He owns a somewhat pedestrian 4.65 ERA and 1.23 WHIP for the season, but the outlook looks much better for the rest of the way, making him a solid buy-low if the window is still open.
