Thu Apr 1812:16Nick Pivetta To Throw Bullpen On Saturday
Boston Red Sox right-hander Nick Pivetta (elbow) is throwing at 120 feet on Thursday and Friday and is scheduled to throw a bullpen session on Saturday. Pivetta is on the 15-day injured list due to a right-elbow sprain, and while he's making progress in his throwing program, he still has a ways to go and will eventually need to go on a minor-league rehab assignment before returning to Boston's starting rotation. Fantasy managers definitely shouldn't expect the 31-year-old to make it back before the calendar flips to May, but Pivetta should be stashed after looking excellent in his first two starts of 2024. He allowed just one earned run on eight hits (one home run) while walking one and striking out 13 in 11 innings pitched for a 0.82 ERA.

Sat Apr 1300:22Nick Pivetta Will Resume Throwing Saturday
Boston Red Sox starting pitcher Nick Pivetta (elbow) is going to test his arm and play catch on Saturday. After Pivetta was diagnosed with a flexor strain in his right elbow on Tuesday, it's encouraging to hear he's ready to resume throwing. The 31-year-old right-hander was off to a spectacular start before the Red Sox shut him down, striking out 13 over 11 innings while surrendering only one run and one walk in two starts. Pivetta has a chance to return before April ends, but it remains to be seen if he'll require a rehab assignment before doing so. It's unclear who will join the club's rotation in the interim, as Boston still hasn't formally listed a probable pitcher for Saturday's matchup versus the visiting Los Angeles Angels, so there isn't a clear fantasy beneficiary of Pivetta's absence.

Tue Apr 916:00Nick Pivetta Has "Mild Strain"
Boston Red Sox general manager Craig Breslow said that right-hander Nick Pivetta (elbow) has a "mild strain" of the flexor tendon in his right arm and could return from the 15-day injured list when he's eligible. The Red Sox wanted to take advantage of the early season schedule to give Pivetta some time off. The 31-year-old is going to miss the next two weeks, but fantasy managers that have him rostered need to keep him in an IL spot until he returns. Pivetta has been excellent in the early going, allowing only an earned run on a solo home run while walking one and fanning 13 in 11 innings over his first two starts in 2024. It's unknown who will take his rotation spot in the short term, with Cooper Criswell, Chase Anderson and Josh Winckowski all being candidates for a few spots starts.

Tue Apr 912:16Nick Pivetta Lands On Injured List
The Boston Red Sox placed right-hander Nick Pivetta (forearm) on the 15-day injured list (retroactive to April 6) on Tuesday due to a flexor strain and recalled left-hander Brennan Bernardino from the minors in a corresponding move. It's tough news for the Red Sox and Pivetta, who had given up just one run with 13 strikeouts and only one walk in 11 innings over his first two starts of the season. Hopefully, he'll only be away from the team for the minimum amount of time, but flexor-tendon injuries can end up being pretty serious. Bernardino will give the Red Sox another left-handed arm in the bullpen. It's unclear who will replace Pivetta in Boston's starting rotation, but names like Josh Winckowski, Cooper Criswell and Chase Anderson could all be options. Stay tuned for more information.

Thu Apr 401:39Nick Pivetta Shuts Down Oakland Again
Boston Red Sox starting pitcher Nick Pivetta helped his team complete a series sweep in Wednesday's 1-0 win over the Oakland Athletics, hurling five scoreless innings on five hits and one walk with three strikeouts. After being saddled with a tough-luck loss in last Friday's 1-0 defeat to the Seattle Mariners, Pivetta contributed to the second shutout victory of Boston's season. On top of that, the 31-year-old Canadian right-hander is now undefeated with a shiny 0.71 ERA and 44 strikeouts in six career appearances against Oakland. Pivetta will take a 0.82 ERA and 0.82 WHIP with 13 punchouts over 11 frames in 2024 into a difficult matchup versus the division-rival Baltimore Orioles and ace Corbin Burnes next Wednesday. Over 23 innings against the O's since 2022, Pivetta owns a 2.35 ERA and 29 strikeouts.

Wed Feb 2118:26Nick Pivetta To Make Spring Debut On Tuesday
Boston Red Sox right-hander Nick Pivetta is scheduled to make his Grapefruit League debut on Tuesday against the St. Louis Cardinals. Pivetta pitched as a starter and reliever in 2023 but appears to be a lock for the Opening Day starting rotation this year. The 31-year-old Canadian finished his year strong and ultimately went 10-9 with a 4.04 ERA (3.96 FIP), a 1.12 WHIP, one save, 50 walks and 183 strikeouts in 142 2/3 innings over 38 appearances (16 starts). Fantasy managers should have reservations about him in a starting role, though, after he had a 4.66 ERA and 1.22 WHIP with 29 walks and 105 strikeouts in his 16 starts. Going deep into games could be an issue as well. At best, consider Pivetta as an option to fill out your starting rotation in deep-mixed leagues.

Tue Sep 12 202312:11Nick Pivetta Starting Game 1 Of Doubleheader
Boston Red Sox right-hander Nick Pivetta is getting the nod on the bump for Game 1 of a doubleheader on Tuesday against the visiting New York Yankees. Monday's scheduled starter for the Red Sox, Kutter Crawford, will be pushed back to the second game of Tuesday's twin bill. Now that lefty James Paxton (knee) has been shut down for the rest of the year, Pivetta will finish the season in Boston's rotation. The 30-year-old will be making his 13th start of 2023 on Tuesday. He's gone 9-8 with a 4.54 ERA, 1.23 WHIP, one save and 150 K's in 117 innings over 34 outings. Pivetta hasn't been as good in his 12 starts, posting a 5.87 ERA while allowing 64 hits (15 home runs), walking 26 and striking out 72 in 61 1/3 frames.

Mon Jul 31 202302:02Nick Pivetta Starting Monday
Boston Red Sox right-handed pitcher Nick Pivetta will start on Monday against the Seattle Mariners. Pivetta has been working mostly in a bulk relief role for the Bo-Sox, but he has had a few shorter outings as well. He hasn't been pitching every fifth day either, so his role has been very unconventional. Pivetta has been excellent since being moved to the bullpen, though, pitching to a 1.96 ERA in 41 innings of work. If this start on Monday signifies a change in his role, it could mean he becomes more viable in fantasy. He might be worth a flier in standard or deeper leagues to see if he can replicate the success he found out of the bullpen.

Tue Jul 18 202302:06Nick Pivetta To Remain In Bulk-Reliever Role
Despite making Boston Red Sox history in Monday's shutout win over the Oakland Athletics, right-hander Nick Pivetta will pitch again in a bulk-relief role on Sunday night against the New York Mets. "At one point, probably, he needs to start because we're going to play (16) in a row. For now, this is the structure we like," manager Alex Cora said. The Red Sox will play 16 games in a row, starting on Aug. 15. The 30-year-old struck out a franchise-high 13 hitters in relief in six scoreless innings as the bulk reliever on Monday against the last-place A's, but he'll continue in his long-relief role for now. Pivetta came into his excellent performance on Monday with a 4.83 ERA (4.72 FIP), 1.29 WHIP, 31 walks and 81 K's in 69 innings over 22 outings (eight starts) for Boston. The Canadian has been much better out of the bullpen, posting a 2.79 ERA with 39 K's in 29 innings in 14 outings since his last start on May 16.

Wed May 17 202323:43Nick Pivetta Moving To Multi-Inning Relief Role
Boston Red Sox manager Alex Cora said that right-hander Nick Pivetta is heading to the bullpen to serve as a multi-inning reliever. "It's where we're at. We're getting healthy. We have a lot of starters. Just dominate your role. We've seen him do it before," Cora said. Left-handed veteran James Paxton is healthy for now and youngster Brayan Bello has earned his spot in the starting rotation, so the struggling Pivetta becomes the odd man out. With the move to a multi-inning relief role, Pivetta can probably be dropped in most fantasy formats for the time being. The 30-year-old Canadian is currently sporting a rough 6.30 ERA (5.78 FIP), 1.55 WHIP, 19 walks and 42 strikeouts in 40 innings over his eight starts for Boston.

Wed Feb 22 202315:03Nick Pivetta Expected To Skip World Baseball Classic
Boston Red Sox right-hander Nick Pivetta (illness) is expected to have to drop out of the 2023 World Baseball Classic due to an illness that has set him back a few days. Pivetta was looking like a potential ace for Team Canada. The 30-year-old dealt with COVID-19 last week and has been slow to bounce back in spring training with the Red Sox. He should be fine for Opening Day of the 2023 season in his third full season with Boston. In 2022, Pivetta went 10-12 with a 4.56 ERA (4.42 FIP), 1.38 WHIP and 22.6 percent strikeout rate in a career-high 179 2/3 innings over 33 starts. Pivetta's velocity and strikeout rate dropped last year, which led to him allowing more hard contact. He should be assured a rotation spot in Beantown, but he's very hard to trust on a start-to-start basis.

Tue Sep 6 202211:11Nick Pivetta Eyeing A Return Wednesday
Boston Red Sox right-hander Nick Pivetta (calf) tested his injured left calf with a bullpen session at Tropicana Field on Monday. As long as there are no ill effects from the side session, Pivetta will take his regular spot in the starting rotation on Wednesday against the Tampa Bay Rays. The 29-year-old left his previous start early on Friday against the Texas Rangers with a left calf contusion when he was hit by a comebacker. In 27 starts for the Red Sox in 2022, Pivetta has gone 9-10 with a 4.37 ERA (4.13 FIP), a 1.33 WHIP, 145 strikeouts and 56 walks in 150 1/3 innings pitched. It looks like fantasy managers will have him available to them this week in the series finale against the Rays. He's the lone Boston pitcher this year to make off of his starts, and it looks like that won't change this week.

Fri Sep 2 202221:50Nick Pivetta Leaves Friday's Start Early
Boston Red Sox right-hander Nick Pivetta left his Friday start against the Texas Rangers with a left calf contusion. Pivetta allowed one run on four hits over three innings while striking out two and walking two before the injury. He suffered the injury while making a play in the field in the third inning and was replaced on the mound by Tyler Danish for the top of the fourth. After Friday's game, the Red Sox should give a clearer indication as to whether Pivetta will be able to make his next scheduled start, which is tentatively set for Wednesday against the Tampa Bay Rays.

Sun Jul 17 202207:41Nick Pivetta Surrenders Seven Runs In Saturday's Loss
Boston Red Sox pitcher Nick Pivetta (8-7) allowed seven runs on seven hits and three walks while striking out four over 4 1/3 innings in Saturday's 14-1 loss to the New York Yankees. He picked up his seventh loss of the season. The right-hander struggled right out of the gate, yielding four runs in the first frame, including a three-run shot to Matt Carpenter. He kept the Yankees off the scoreboard the next three innings until New York tacked another three runs in the fifth frame. The 29-year-old has struggled mightily over his last three starts, allowing 20 earned runs while posting a 13.50 ERA across 13 1/3 innings during that stretch. Pivetta enters the All-Star break with a 4.50 ERA, 1.26 WHIP, and 104 strikeouts across 108 innings in 2022.

Mon Jun 13 202209:43Nick Pivetta Bumped Up To Tuesday For Next Start
Boston Red Sox starting pitcher Nick Pivetta will start the team's next game on Tuesday against the Oakland Athletics. Nathan Eovaldi (back) was originally slated to start Tuesday's game, but the team placed him on the 15-day injured list on Sunday. Rich Hill is now pitching on Wednesday against the A's and the team has yet to announce a starter for Thursday's series finale. Pivetta has posted quality starts in six of his last seven outings. He's 5-5 with a 3.78 ERA and a 1.14 WHIP on the year.

Thu May 19 202200:45Nick Pivetta Tosses Complete Game
Boston Red Sox starting pitcher Nick Pivetta was able to go the distance against the Houston Astros on Wednesday. He gave up a leadoff home run to Jose Altuve, but Pivetta settled in after that. Pivetta went nine innings, allowing two hits, one earned run, and struck out eight in the victory. This marks his second career complete game and a much needed outing to give the Boston bullpen a rest day. Pivetta has surprisingly been solid over his last three starts. Fantasy managers might actually be able to trust him as a streaming option for his next start.

Fri Apr 15 202221:58Nick Pivetta Roughed Up On Friday
Boston Red Sox right-hander Nick Pivetta had a rough outing in an 8-4 loss to the Minnesota Twins on Friday. Pivetta allowed four runs over two innings of work while striking out two and walking two. He gave up one homer, a two-run shot off of the bat of Miguel Sano in the second inning. Pivetta has not been great for the Red Sox through his first two starts of the season, allowing eight runs over seven innings of work while striking out six. He will look to get back on track next time out when he faces the Toronto Blue Jays on Wednesday. He will not be a recommended fantasy option for that start.

Wed Mar 16 202219:12Nick Pivetta Destined For No. 2 Starter Role
Boston Red Sox pitcher Nick Pivetta is expected to occupy the No. 2 role in the rotation coming out of Spring Training, according to Ian Browne of MLB.com. With Eduardo Rodriguez in Detroit and Chris Sale (rib) sidelined, Pivetta will see his usage increase this season. He should pitch on April 9th against the Yankees after Nathan Eovaldi gets Opening Day. From there on, offseason additions Michael Wacha and Rich Hill will find themselves in the mix. In 2021, Pivetta went 9-8 with a 4.53 ERA, 26.5 percent strikeout rate, and 9.8 percent walk rate through 31 games (30 starts). The 29-year-old remained strong down the stretch, allowing just four runs over 13.2 innings in the postseason. He found himself used as both a starter and long reliever in October.

Wed Oct 20 202114:42Nick Pivetta Strong For Five Innings In Game 4
Boston Red Sox starting pitcher Nick Pivetta got the nod to start Game 4 of the ALCS against the Houston Astros, and he delivered a very strong performance with just one run allowed on two hits and two walks in five innings of work. He struck out three batters, and the only blemish came on a home run from Alex Bregman in the top of the first inning. Pivetta has delivered a 2.63 ERA and 1.02 WHIP with 14 strikeouts in 13 2/3 innings across three appearances this postseason, and he's quickly establishing himself as a reliable option to eat up innings under pressure, whether that be as a starter or out of the bullpen.

Mon Oct 11 202111:52Nick Pivetta Takes Win In Heroic Relief Appearance
Boston Red Sox starting pitcher Nick Pivetta was expected to be the starter in Monday's Game 4 against the Tampa Bay Rays, but that will no longer be the case after he was pressed into relief duty in Boston's 6-4 extra-inning victory Sunday. Pivetta came on to start the top of the 10th inning, and he was the only pitcher manager Alex Cora needed the rest of the way, as he battled through four shutout innings with only three hits and a walk allowed. He struck out seven batters, and was the benefit of some good luck in the top of the 13th to earn the win. He's unlikely to appear for the rest of the series, though heavy usage is no guarantee of rest in the playoffs.
