Thu Jan 2514:39Yankees Ink Luis Torrens To Minor-League Pact
The New York Yankees have signed catcher Luis Torrens to a minor-league deal. The 27-year-old was not tendered a qualifying offer by the Seattle Mariners and elected to become a free agent in November. He also appeared in a combined 24 games at the Triple-A level between the Mariners and Washington Nationals organizations. Torrens does have 271 big-league games under his belt in parts of six seasons and has hit .227 with 19 home runs and a .643 OPS across 807 plate appearances between the Padres, Cubs, and Mariners.

Tue Oct 31 202316:06Easton McGee, Adam Oller, Luis Torrens Outrighted
The Seattle Mariners outrighted right-handers Easton McGee (elbow) and Adam Oller and catcher Luis Torrens to Triple-A Tacoma on Tuesday. McGee had Tommy John surgery on his right elbow in May and is expected to be sidelined into the second half of the 2024 campaign. The 25-year-old has thrown 9 2/3 scoreless innings with a walk and three K's in two outings (one start) in the last two years with Seattle and the Tampa Bay Rays. Oller, 29, gave up 24 runs (22 earned) in just 19 2/3 innings over nine games (one start) for the Oakland Athletics in 2023 with 12 walks and 13 strikeouts. Torrens, 27, played in 18 games with the M's and Chicago Cubs this year and went 7-for-28 (.250) with no homers and four RBI in just 30 plate appearances at the big-league level.

Thu Jan 26 202313:35Luis Torrens Signs Minor-League Deal With Cubs
Free-agent catcher Luis Torrens signed a minor-league deal with the Chicago Cubs on Wednesday that includes an invite to major-league spring training. Torrens spent the 2022 season with the Seattle Mariners and hit .225/.283/.298 with a .581 OPS, three home runs, 15 RBI and 13 runs scored in 166 plate appearances and 55 games. The 26-year-old will provide catching depth in Chicago behind Yan Gomes and Tucker Barnhart, but he won't be much of a fantasy option if he's on the big-league roster at any point. In his five-year big-league career, Torrens has a .226/.288/.354 slash line with a .642 OPS, 19 home runs, 75 RBI and 66 runs scored in 251 games played.

Seattle acquired Casali (oblique) and Matthew Boyd (elbow) from the Giants before the trade deadline in exchange for right-hander Michael Stryffeler. Casali will serve as Seattle's top backup catcher to Cal Raleigh after slashing .231/325/.370 with four homers and 14 RBI across 41 games in 2022.

The Seattle Mariners placed catcher Luis Torrens (shoulder) on the injured list on Monday. Fellow catcher Andrew Knapp was called up from Triple-A to fill his roster spot. Torrens injured his shoulder during the team's brawl with the Los Angeles Angels on Sunday. The 26-year-old hasn't been able to produce much offensively so far this year. After hitting 15 home runs and slashing .243/.299/.431 in 2021, he has gone without a homer in his first 36 games of 2022 while hitting .222/.280/.241.

Tue Apr 19 202218:45Luis Torrens To Land On COVID-19 Injured List
The Seattle Mariners will be placing catcher Luis Torrens on the COVID-19 injured list. The team will recall first baseman Mike Ford in a corresponding move. No reason has been given yet for why Torrens is heading to the COVID-19 injured list. Mariners beat writer Daniel Kramer reports that the team will be without some staff members for Tuesday's game as well, suggesting that their absence could be related to Torrens' move to the COVID-19 injured list. Torrens has appeared in four games so far this year and he's gone 3-for-13 at the plate. The team still has catchers Cal Raleigh and Tom Murphy to hold things down while Torrens is out.

Mon Oct 4 202113:24Luis Torrens Doubles, Scores Twice Sunday
Seattle Mariners catcher Luis Torrens scored two runs Sunday as he went 2-for-4 with a double in a 7-3 loss to the Los Angeles Angels that left the Mariners on the outside looking in at the AL playoff picture. Torrens played in 108 games this season, slashing .243/.299/.431 with 15 homers, 39 runs scored, and 47 RBI. He'll carry catcher eligibility into 2022 despite appearing most often as a designated hitter. That will make him a back-end consideration in two-catcher formats.

Wed Sep 29 202111:08Luis Torrens Has Three Hits, Scores A Run
Seattle Mariners catcher Luis Torrens had a three-hit game Tuesday against the Oakland Athletics. He also scored a run. Torrens has become a mainstay in the Seattle lineup, and now has multi-hit performances in three of his past four games. He's slashing .361/.375/.459 in September, and while he has just one home run in that time, his 15 homers in 329 at-bats this year are enough to make him worth a look in two-catcher formats.

Tue Sep 28 202111:32Luis Torrens Drives In Two Monday
Seattle Mariners catcher Luis Torrens got the start at designated hitter and batted fifth Monday against the Oakland Athletics and lefty Cole Irvin, and he came through with two hits and two RBI. Torrens has slashed .314/.358/.430 over his last 30 games, and he now has 15 homers and 47 RBI in 325 at-bats this season. Torrens could be a solid play in daily formats the rest of the season against lefties, as he has earned his way into the middle of the lineup.

Fri Sep 24 202112:31Luis Torrens Delivers Two-Run Pinch-Hit Homer
Seattle Mariners catcher Luis Torrens appeared as a pinch-hitter in Thursday's game against the Oakland Athletics and delivered a two-run home run off relief pitcher Jake Diekman. It was Torrens' 15th long ball of the year in 313 at-bats. Torrens has been swinging the bat well lately, slashing .350/.372/.475 in his last 40 at-bats across 15 games. He could be a worthwhile addition in two-catcher formats, but even that might be a stretch, as he doesn't see much playing time against righties.

Sat Sep 18 202100:38Luis Torrens Continues Swinging Hot Bat
Seattle Mariners catcher Luis Torrens had another strong game Friday night against the Kansas City Royals, going 2-for-3 with a walk, an RBI, and a run scored. Torrens has been stronger against left-handed pitching all season, but this outing was notably against the right-handed Jon Heasley. Torrens is now slashing .318/.365/.466 in his last 30 games and 88 at-bats. Playing nearly every day at designated hitter, those numbers could make him a viable option in two-catcher formats, especially if his platoon splits start to even out.

Sat Aug 28 202111:40Luis Torrens Drives In Four Runs Friday
Seattle Mariners catcher Luis Torrens was responsible for much of the offense against the Kansas City Royals Friday night, going 1-for-3 with a double, two walks, and a sacrifice fly, totaling four RBI for the day. Torrens has cooled off after an outstanding June and July with just a .210/.254/.355 slash line in August, but he's playing every day and has tons of pop with 14 home runs in 256 at-bats. Fantasy managers in two-catcher leagues should take note.

Tue Aug 24 202123:56Luis Torrens Drives In Two Tuesday
Seattle Mariners catcher Luis Torrens had a nice game against the Oakland Athletics Tuesday, going 2-for-4 with a double, two RBI, and a run scored. While eligible at catcher, Torrens is garnering nearly every-day at-bats at designated hitter. He's produced a .706 OPS with 14 homers in 251 at-bats this season, so while he wouldn't have equity in single-catcher leagues, he might make a good add for a power-desperate fantasy manager in a two-catcher format.

Wed Aug 18 202101:19Luis Torrens Hits 14th Homer
Seattle Mariners catcher Luis Torrens added another home run to his total Tuesday night, hitting his 14th long ball off of Texas Rangers relief pitcher Brett Martin in a 3-1 victory. Torrens went 2-for-4 in the game while batting seventh as the designated hitter. He now has a modest five-game hitting streak going, with seven hits, including a double and two home runs, in his last 18 at-bats. Torrens doesn't offer a very strong batting average, with a .220 number for the year, but he offers plenty of pop to catcher-desperate fantasy managers.

Sun Aug 15 202111:24Luis Torrens Drives In Five
Seattle Mariners catcher Luis Torrens provided plenty of offense against the Toronto Blue Jays Saturday, going 2-for-4 with a home run, a double, and five RBI. The three-run shot was his 13th of the season in just 224 at-bats. Though Torrens is primarily listed as a catcher, he's spending most of his time at designated hitter and first base. He won't help fantasy managers much in batting average, with just a .214 mark for the season, but he could be worth an add in two-catcher leagues for managers in need of some cheap power.

Wed Aug 11 202118:50Luis Torrens Out Of Wednesday's Lineup
Seattle Mariners catcher Luis Torrens isn't starting on Wednesday. The Mariners will match up with left-hander Kolby Allard and the Texas Rangers but will do so with Torrens on the bench. The 25-year-old is hitting .206 with a .278 on-base percentage and 12 home runs in 237 plate appearances this season. He's been seeing more starts at designated hitter and first base as of late due to Cal Raleigh's promotion. Jake Bauers is starting at designated hitter in place of Torrens and batting ninth against Allard. Bauers is hitting .214 with a .286 on-base percentage, three home runs, and two stolen bases in 253 plate appearances this season. Fantasy managers are probably better off looking elsewhere for streaming help.

Wed Aug 4 202111:58Luis Torrens Gets First Career Start At Third Base
Seattle Mariners catcher Luis Torrens will shift positions and cover the hot corner for Wednesday's game against the Tampa Bay Rays. He was originally a shortstop out of Venezuela, but has played primarily as a catcher in the MLB. However, he does often take groundball drills in the infield, so Torrens should be comfortable at third base. He'll bat sixth versus lefty Josh Fleming on Wednesday. Torrens has 12 long balls on the year, so he might have some low-end streaming appeal in this matchup.
