Sat Jun 12 202102:16DeGrom exits with elbow injury in Mets' 3-2 win over Padres
NEW YORK (AP) — Jacob deGrom was pulled from a do-it-all gem with right flexor tendinitis, a troubling diagnosis for the New York Mets that clouded a 3-2 victory over the San Diego Padres on Friday night. DeGrom (6-2) faced the minimum over six innings and ripped a two-run single, giving him five RBIs this season — compared to four earned runs allowed. He struck out 10 in the abbreviated outing. DeGrom left after 80 pitches and extending his scoreless streak to 22 innings. He had a no-hit bid until Wil Myers beat the shift with a weak grounder in the fifth. Billy McKinney drove in a run with the first of his two doubles in the fifth, and deGrom followed with his two-run hit. San Diego dropped its third straight. Blake Snell (2-3) allowed three runs in four-plus innings, and the Padres couldn’t do enough damage against New York’s bullpen. CUBS 8, CARDINALS 5 CHICAGO (AP) — Anthony Rizzo hit a tying home run in the sixth inning on the 14th pitch of his at-bat against Daniel Ponce de Leon.... [More]

Fri Dec 11 202018:04Rangers re-sign pitcher Jimmy Herget, dump OF Scott Heineman
ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — The Texas Rangers re-signed right-hander Jimmy Herget to a major league contract and designated outfielder Scott Heineman for assignment Friday. The 27-year-old Herget's salary will be $700,000 while on the major league roster and $150,000 if he is assigned to the minor leagues. Herget became a free agent when the Rangers didn't offer him a contract by the Dec. 2 deadline. Herget was 1-0 with a 3.20 ERA in 20 appearances, including one start, for the Rangers during the 60-game season in 2020. He was second on the staff in appearances and relief innings (18 2/3). Herget was with Cincinnati in 2019. Heineman appeared in 24 games over two stints with the Rangers last season, hitting .154 with a homer and seven RBIs.. ___ More AP MLB: https://apnews.com/MLB and https://twitter.com/AP_Sports

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Right-hander Joe Gatto agreed to a one-year contract on Thursday with the Texas Rangers, who brought back outfielder Scott Heineman with a one-year deal just one day after allowing him to become a free agent. Gatto would earn the $570,500 major league minimum if he is in the big leagues and $93,000 while in the minors. Heineman would make $595,000 if in the majors and $180,000 while in the minors. The 25-year-old Gatto was selected by the Angels with the 53rd overall pick in the second round of the 2014 amateur draft. He made two appearances during spring training this year and did not pitch after the coronavirus shutdown. He has a 28-31 record with a 4.80 ERA in 86 starts and 36 relief appearances in the minors and has never appeared in the major leagues. Heineman, who turns 28 on Friday, hit .154 with one homer and seven RBIs for the Rangers this year. Wed Dec 2 202021:07Injured Santana allowed to become free agent by Rangers
ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Switch-hitting outfielder Danny Santana will continue his rehab from elbow surgery as a free agent after the Texas Rangers didn't offer him a contract before Wednesday's deadline. The Rangers also didn't offer contracts to right-hander Jimmy Herget and outfielder Scott Heineman, making them free agents. Santana was the Rangers player of the year during the 2019 season in a utility role, and went into 2020 as the team's starting center fielder. But he played only 15 games this year and was on the injured list twice before surgery on his right elbow in September 9. He isn't expected to be ready for the start of next season. General manager Jon Daniel said the team wanted more time to evaluate Santana as he continues his rehab. “He’s been a pro for the two years he’s been with us and the door remains open depending on a variety of factors,” Daniels said. Santana went to spring training in 2019 as a non-roster player before hitting .283 with 28 homers and 81 RBIs, with at least five starts at every infield and outfield position. He hit .145 with a homer and seven RBIs this year. Herget (1-0, 3.20 ERA) pitched in relief in 19 of his 20 games. Heineman hit .154 with a homer and seven RBIs in 24 games. ___ More AP MLB: https://apnews.com/MLB and https://twitter.com/AP_Sports

Wed Sep 2 202001:28Chapman's 1st save seals Yankees' 5-3 win over Tampa Bay
NEW YORK (AP) — Yankees closer Aroldis Chapman threw a 101 mph fastball near the head of pinch-hitter Michael Brosseau while closing out his first save of the season, prompting the benches to empty after New York ended a six-game losing streak against the Tampa Bay Rays with a 5-3 victory Tuesday night.Chapman’s first pitch to Brosseau with two outs in the ninth inning whizzed past Brosseau’s head, and umpires met before issuing warnings to both benches amid a budding rivalry that’s been dominated this season by Tampa Bay. Chapman struck out Brosseau to end it, and Brosseau began walking toward the visiting dugout before turning back to exchange words with someone on the Yankees. The dugouts and benches emptied and players gathered near home plate, but they mostly kept their distance before dispersing to their respective clubhouses.DJ LeMahieu homered twice, and Gio Urshela hit a tiebreaking, three-run Little League homer in the sixth inning as New York beat the Rays at Yankee Stadium for... Fri Aug 21 202002:24Trout sees another high-and-tight heater from SF reliever
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Angels star Mike Trout flinched after yet another high-and-tight fastball from San Francisco reliever Shaun Anderson, prompting a warning from the plate umpire Thursday night in the Giants’ 10-5 win over Los Angeles. Two days earlier in Anaheim, Trout was upset when Anderson twice threw near his head in the ninth inning. After that game, Giants manager Gabe Kapler said he was giving Anderson, a 25-year-old with control issues, some needed work after not pitching for a while. This time, the three-time AL MVP turned his head after another heater sailed up and in. Angels manager Joe Maddon loudly cursed and complained before emerging from the dugout to continue — after this week’s previous episode, Maddon said of Anderson: “That’s just a young man that’s not ready to be here, that’s all that is.”A few people in the Giants barked back as Maddon came onto the field and the umpires conferred in the infield, prompting the warning from plate ump Lance Barrett.Once play resumed,...
