Thu May 13 202115:36Kelenic, Gilbert headline major roster shuffle for Mariners
SEATTLE (AP) — Jerry Dipoto couldn't help but chuckle when Jarred Kelenic went deep in his first at-bat at the Triple-A level. It was yet more evidence Kelenic was ready for the big leagues. “I laughed out loud when he had a homer in his first Triple-A at-bat off a lefty, because that’s about as appropriate to how Jared Kelenic accepts challenges as you can imagine,” Dipoto said Thursday. “And I’m sure he’s going to be up for this next one, which is facing the best pitchers in the world night after night.” Kelenic and right-handed pitcher Logan Gilbert are making their debuts for the Mariners on Thursday night as Seattle takes the next step in its rebuilding project. Kelenic is expected to start in left field, while Gilbert will start on the mound as Seattle opens a four-game series with Cleveland. “Players, sometimes they hit the ground running, and sometimes they don’t. The major leagues are difficult,” Dipoto said. “But there’s never any more excitement than with the anticipation of... [More]

Wed Apr 7 202114:33James Paxton heads to IL as Mariners await MRI results
SEATTLE (AP) — The Seattle Mariners placed left-handed starter James Paxton on the 10-day injured list Wednesday with a forearm strain in his pitching arm. Seattle also put starting left fielder Jake Fraley on the 10-day IL with a left hamstring strain he suffered while making a diving catch in Tuesday’s loss to the Chicago White Sox. Manager Scott Servais said both players underwent MRIs on Wednesday morning and the team was still awaiting results. Paxton left in the second inning after just 24 pitches, grimacing after throwing a 92 mph fastball to Andrew Vaughn. It was the first start of his second stint with Seattle. “Leaving last night he was a little bit more optimistic that it wasn’t anything too serious. I know he woke up today and it’s stiff as expected,” Servais said of Paxton. “Really, it’s hard to speculate until you know exactly what’s going on there and the only way you’re going to know is you get the reading on the MRI.” Seattle recalled outfielder Braden Bishop and right-hander... Tue Mar 9 202116:37Taylor Trammell may end up being Mariners' left fielder
For all the attention on the Seattle Mariners' decision-making surrounding top prospect Jarred Kelenic, there is another young outfielder who seems more likely to be on the club’s opening day roster. Taylor Trammell has never played above Double-A. But with Kelenic sidelined by a knee injury and a couple of other outfielders struggling early in spring training, Trammell could have a shot at being on the field when the Mariners open the season on April 1 against San Francisco. “I think he fits in very well with our group,” manager Scott Servais said. “He’s comfortable. He now has been around us long enough he understands our language and our verbiage and what we value. He fits right in with that.” The 23-year-old Trammell is on the third organization of his career despite regularly being regarded as one of the top 100 prospects in baseball. He was one of the main pieces when Seattle traded Austin Nola and a pair of relievers to the San Diego Padres last season as the Mariners continued to... [More]

Wed Aug 19 202018:54Mariners designate former All-Star Vogelbach for assignment
SEATTLE (AP) — The Seattle Mariners have designated Daniel Vogelbach for assignment barely a year after he was an All-Star selection. The Mariners made the move Wednesday before the start of a five-game homestand. Vogelbach was hitting .094 with only five base hits and two home runs since the season began. He had yet to play a game in the field this season at first base and was reduced to only being a designated hitter. “Vogey is kind of locked in (to one spot). We tried to play him some at first base last year, not his strength. His strength is in the batter’s box and hopefully hitting it over the fence, but he doesn’t bring a whole lot other than the bat,” manager Scott Servais said. “When the bat is your big carrying tool, you have to hit. It’s a do-good league. Where we are at right now, we’re just going to give some of those at-bats and opportunities to some other players.” A year ago, Vogelbach had a strong first half to the season, hitting 21 home runs and driving in 51 runs before...
