The Philadelphia Phillies swung a trade with the Houston Astros Friday, acquiring catcher Garrett Stubbs in exchange for minor league outfielder Logan Cerny. In a separate transaction, the Phillies claimed pitcher Kent Emanuel off waivers from Houston. Stubbs is expected to fill a back-up role behind starting catcher J.T. Realmuto for the Phillies. He hasn't produced much at the big-league level, slashing .182/.238/.247 over three seasons. Emanuel had a bumpy 2021, undergoing elbow surgery as well as being suspended for using a performance-enhancing substance, though he's denied any transgression. He may miss the start of the season, but figures to be a bulk reliever and depth starting option.

HOUSTON (AP) — Houston third baseman Alex Bregman was placed on the 10-day injured list on Thursday with a strained left quadriceps. Bregman was injured in the first inning of a win against Texas on Wednesday night while running to first base when he grounded into a double play. He pulled up a few steps before first base and hobbled off the field after the play before heading to the clubhouse. Astros manager Dusty Baker said there isn't currently a timetable for his return. “We really don’t know,” Baker said. “He’s being evaluated by doctors today. Even when they do tell us, to tell you how long it’s going to be, it’s merely a guess." Bregman is hitting .275 with seven homers and 34 RBIs this season. HOUSTON (AP) — The Houston Astros have placed second baseman Jose Altuve, third baseman Alex Bregman, designated hitter Yordan Álvarez, catcher Martín Maldonado and infielder Robel Garcia on the injured list because of COVID-19 health and safety protocols. General manager James Click made the announcement on Wednesday, hours before the Astros were to wrap up a three-game series with the Detroit Tigers. Click said he couldn’t say if a player had tested positive for COVID-19 or been exposed to someone who had and that the length of each player's absence would be determined by contract testing that is being performed. Click was asked if the situation could have caused the game to be postponed. “We’ve been in close contact with Major League Baseball throughout the day about that possibility," he said. “They don’t believe that there is a health-safety reason not to play.
