Mon Apr 2211:44Spencer Turnbull Heading To The Bullpen Soon
Philadelphia Phillies pitcher Spencer Turnbull will head to the bullpen after Wednesday's start against the Cincinnati Reds. Turnbull has had a solid start to the season with an ERA of 1.23 in 22 innings pitched. He has allowed three runs through four games with 10 hits, 22 strikeouts, and seven walks. The return of Taijuan Walker (shoulder) is expected to happen during this weekend's series against the San Diego Padres. This will allow the Phillies to monitor Turnball with his move to the bullpen. With having pitched less than 57 innings since 2019, the Phillies would like to keep their pitching rotation safe and healthy. Turnbull should be held onto in deep-leagues while adding Walker. He went 15-6 in 2023 with a 4.38 ERA in 31 starts, adding a nice depth to rosters.

Fri Apr 1922:04Spencer Turnbull Takes No-No Into Seventh Inning On Friday
Philadelphia Phillies starting pitching Spencer Turnbull took a no-hitter into the seventh inning and recorded a win in the Phillies 7-0 victory on Friday night. Turnbull struck out six and only yielded one hit to Gavin Sheets to end his no-hit bid. The righty bounced back from a so-so start in his last outing against the Pittsburgh Pirates and continued a very strong start to his 2024 campaign. Turnbull now has a 1.23 ERA in four starts and is posting up a 0.77 WHIP. Fantasy managers are certainly going to be interested in adding Turnbull if he's available on the waiver wire. By expected stats we can expect some negative regression to come his way, but at a 3.39 xERA the negative regression won't hit him too hard. Turnbull is worth the addition to your roster, even if it's just stashing him for a little longer. His next start will be Wednesday at Great American Ballpark against the Cincinnati Reds.

Tue Apr 900:49Spencer Turnbull Tosses Quality Start Monday
Philadelphia Phillies starting pitcher Spencer Turnbull looked sharp once again in Monday's 5-3 extra-innings win over the Cardinals. Turnbull pitched six scoreless innings, allowing just two hits and a walk with six strikeouts. He also hit a batter. The 31-year-old has yet to allow a run in his first two starts and has 13 strikeouts and just one walk in 13 IP. Turnbull is currently rostered in 25% of leagues, but that could start to rise if he continues to pitch well. He will face a test in his next projected start against a strong Pirates lineup.

Mon Feb 1212:13Spencer Turnbull Joins Phillies
Free-agent right-hander Spencer Turnbull signed a one-year, $2 million deal with the Philadelphia Phillies on Sunday that includes $2 million in incentives. Turnbull missed all of the 2022 season due to injury and only made seven starts for the Detroit Tigers in 2023 because of another injury. The 31-year-old will head to camp with the Phillies this year hoping to win a back-end starting rotation spot in spring training. He has a minor-league option remaining as well, so there's a chance he could find himself opening up the 2024 season at Triple-A Lehigh Valley as rotation depth in the minors. In his five big-league seasons with the Tigers, Turnbull has been decent with a 4.55 ERA (3.82 FIP), a 1.36 WHIP and a 21.3 percent strikeout rate in 302 1/3 innings over 61 outings (60 starts). If he ends up starting for the Phils, he'll be an option in NL-only leagues for pitching depth.

Mon Oct 2 202312:54Spencer Turnbull Expected To Enter Next Season As A Starter
The Detroit Tigers expect right-hander Spencer Turnbull to enter the 2024 season as a starting pitcher. "We expect him to prepare as a starter this offseason and show up to Lakeland ready to compete for a job in our rotation," president of baseball operations Scott Harris said. Turnbull only made seven starts for Detroit in 2023, going 1-4 with a rough 7.26 ERA (5.55 FIP), 1.68 WHIP, 15 walks and 24 strikeouts in 31 innings pitched after missing all of the 2022 campaign due to Tommy John surgery. He made eight starts on the farm and wasn't effective down there, either. If the 31-year-old has a regular offseason and shows up healthy to spring training in 2024, he could be in line for a bounce-back season in what could be his final year with the Tigers.

Wed Aug 23 202314:11Spencer Turnbull Activated, Optioned To Triple-A
Detroit Tigers pitcher Spencer Turnbull (neck) has been activated from the 60-day injured list and subsequently optioned to Triple-A Toledo. The right-hander missed the entirety of the 2022 season following May 2021 Tommy John surgery and made just seven starts with the Tigers in 2023 before hitting the shelf. Those seven outings did not go Turnbull's way, however, as he turned in a 7.26 ERA across 31 innings of work while posting a minuscule 6.2% K-BB% in that time. His rehab assignment didn't go as planned, either, as Turnbull posted a 7.71 ERA across four starts with Toledo after tossing a solid 3.60 ERA across a pair of starts at High-A. It appears the Tigers will give Turnbull some additional time in the minors to get things turned around.

Mon Jul 24 202312:23Spencer Turnbull To Make Two Rehab Starts This Week
Detroit Tigers right-hander Spencer Turnbull (neck) will make minor-league rehab starts for High-A West Michigan on Tuesday and Sunday this week, according to manager A.J. Hinch. Turnbull will take the next step in his rehab after facing live hitters for a week. The 30-year-old will most likely need several more rehab starts after this week to build up his arm since he's been sidelined since early May. After his two starts for West Michigan this week, the Tigers will most likely move him to either Double-A Erie or Triple-A Toledo. Turnbull won't be guaranteed a starting-rotation spot in Detroit when he's healthy, as he was 1-4 with a rough 7.26 ERA, 1.68 WHIP and 24 strikeouts in 31 innings over seven starts before his injury.

Fri Jul 14 202321:32Spencer Turnbull Will Toss Batting Practice Saturday
Detroit Tigers starting pitcher Spencer Turnbull (neck) will toss a live batting practice session on Saturday. The right-hander missed all last season because of Tommy John surgery. Unfortunately, he returned this year but was limited to only seven starts before landing on the 60-day injured list because of a neck injury. Even worse, he was sitting on a 1-4 record with a miserable 7.26 ERA before going on the shelf. But at least he's making progress, although he needs to make amends with fantasy managers once he eventually returns.

Wed Jun 28 202314:38Spencer Turnbull To Throw Touch-And-Feel Bullpen This Week
Detroit Tigers pitcher Spencer Turnbull (neck) has been cleared to throw a touch-and-feel bullpen session later this week as he works his way back from a neck injury. It's been a turbulent season for the right-hander, as he returned from Tommy John surgery only to make seven starts of 7.26 ERA baseball across 31 innings of work. Turnbull was roughed up for five earned runs across 4 2/3 innings on May 6 against the Cardinals and was placed on the 15-day injured list shortly thereafter. He is one of the numerous injuries to the Tigers pitching staff at the moment, but a healthy Turnbull posted a 2.88 ERA across nine starts in the 2021 season before undergoing his Tommy John procedure.

Sat May 13 202314:47Spencer Turnbull Placed On 15-Day IL
Detroit Tigers starting pitcher Spencer Turnbull (neck) landed on the 15-day injured list on Saturday, retroactive to May 7. The right-hander hasn't had a good year thus far, amassing a 1-4 record with a 7.26 ERA (seven starts). As a result, he was recently optioned to Triple-A Toledo, although he'll now head to the IL instead. It's unknown what's exactly causing the neck discomfort. However, it's not good news for a guy who missed the 2022 season because of Tommy John surgery.

Thu Apr 6 202309:27Spencer Turnbull Toes Rubber Versus Red Sox Thursday
Detroit Tigers starting pitcher Spencer Turnbull will take the ball Thursday for the Tigers' home opener versus the Boston Red Sox. The right-hander made his first regular-season start since May of 2021 last week against the Rays but was rocked for seven runs on eight hits and three walks across just 2 1/3 innings of work. He also hit a batter and threw a wild pitch in the outing. Turnbull's 2021 Tommy John surgery came just weeks after he threw a no-hitter in Seattle while he pitched to a stout 2.88 ERA in nine starts before undergoing the knife. He also worked to a 3.97 ERA in the shortened 2020 season but his elbow failed him when he was emerging as a front-end big-league starter. The 30-year-old has allowed two earned runs in eight innings across two starts in his career against the Red Sox.

Mon Feb 27 202320:02Spencer Turnbull Throws Versus Live Hitters
Detroit Tigers starting pitcher Spencer Turnbull (elbow) took the mound to face live hitters on Monday. This marks the second time that the right-hander has thrown batting practice this spring. The 30-year-old appears to be getting closer to making his Spring Training debut. It sounds like Turnbull has fully recovered his Tommy John surgery that forced him to miss all of the 2022 season. Turnbull was great during his nine starts in 2021 before undergoing surgery. The hope is that Turnbull returns to his 2021 form, which would quickly make him a popular fantasy option.

Thu Jul 28 202209:11Spencer Turnbull Won't Pitch In 2022
Detroit Tigers right-hander Spencer Turnbull (elbow) underwent Tommy John surgery last July. While there had been speculation that he could make a return to the majors in late 2022, Tigers manager A.J. Hinch recently put a rest to that scenario. Hinch told the media on Wednesday that Turnbull will not pitch in 2022. He stated that Turnbull would have needed to be rushed in order to make one or two starts in September and that type of approach wouldn't have been worth it for either Turnbull or the team.

Wed Jul 7 202113:18Tigers put Cameron on IL, transfer no-hit Turnbull to 60-day
ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Detroit Tigers rookie center fielder Daz Cameron was placed on the 10-day injured list Wednesday with a sprained right big toe, and right-handed starter Spencer Turnbull was transferred to the 60-day injured list. Cameron got hurt when he ran into the wall when tracking flyballs before the start of a three-game series in Texas. The IL move was retroactive to Monday, when he was scratched from the starting lineup before the series opener. Turnbull, who threw a no-hitter at Seattle on May 18, has been on the IL since after his last start on June 5 because of a strained right forearm. Manager A.J. Hinch said Turnbull (4-2, 2.88 ERA in nine starts) returned from his rehab in Florida and joined the team in Texas to be reevaluated by Rangers team physician Dr. Keith Meister on Wednesday. “In his throwing program, he’s taking a step backwards. He’s still feeling symptoms, they’ve reemerged,” Hinch said. “So we’ve got to go back through the battery of tests. ... But it looks... [More]
