Tue Feb 1319:46Marlins Invite Yonny Chirinos To Spring Training
The Miami Marlins signed free-agent right-hander Yonny Chirinos to a minor-league deal on Tuesday with an invitation to big-league spring training. Chirinos spent 2018-23 with the Tampa Bay Rays, so new general manager Peter Bendix is familiar with Chirinos already. The 30-year-old veteran has appeared in 69 games (38 starts) at the major-league level and has produced a 106 ERA+ and 1.20 WHIP. In 20 appearances (nine starts) for the Rays and Atlanta Braves in 2023, he had an offspeed run value in the 87th percentile, a ground-ball percentage in the 71st percentile and a walk percentage in the 65th percentile while posting a career-worst 5.40 ERA (5.43 FIP) and 1.39 WHIP while walking 27 and striking out 53 in 85 total innings. Chirinos hasn't really been effective since 2019 and will be battling for a roster spot in Miami in 2024.

Mon Aug 21 202312:12Yonny Chirinos Goes On Injured List, Allan Winans Recalled
The Atlanta Braves placed right-hander Yonny Chirinos (elbow) on the 15-day injured list (retroactive to Aug. 20) with right-elbow inflammation on Monday and recalled right-handed pitching prospect Allan Winans from Triple-A Gwinnett in a corresponding move. Chirinos hasn't looked good in five starts for the Braves, allowing 23 earned runs on 33 hits (five homers) while walking seven and striking out 22 in 22 1/3 innings. Winans, the team's No. 30 prospect per MLB Pipeline, will replace Chirinos in the starting rotation and will start on Monday against the division-rival New York Mets. The 28-year-old rookie has allowed just two earned runs while striking out 14 in 11 1/3 innings in his first two big-league starts, making him intriguing in a two-start week.

Mon Jul 31 202314:26Yonny Chirinos To Start Again For Braves On Wednesday
Atlanta Braves right-hander Yonny Chirinos will make his second start for the team this Wednesday against the Los Angeles Angels. Chirinos didn't have a great debut for Atlanta last Friday, allowing four runs on six hits while walking one and striking out three in just 3 2/3 innings, but he'll get at least one more start this week. The 29-year-old Venezuelan probably isn't going to go very deep in this one and has only struck out 34 hitters in 66 1/3 innings of work in 2023 over 16 appearances (five starts) for the Braves and Tampa Bay Rays, so there isn't much fantasy upside here. The Angels are also a more formidable matchup for fantasy purposes given their recent acquisitions of first baseman C.J. Cron and outfielder Randal Grichuk.

Fri Jul 28 202316:27Yonny Chirinos Making Braves Debut Friday
Right-hander Yonny Chirinos will be making his Atlanta Braves debut on Friday when he draws the start against the visiting Milwaukee Brewers. Chirinos ended up with Atlanta after he was designated for assignment by the Tampa Bay Rays last weekend. The 29-year-old right-hander won't be much of a streamer against the first-place Brewers in fantasy. He's unlikely to go very deep in his first traditional start for the Braves to kick off their weekend series. In 15 appearances (four starts) for the Rays in 2023, Chirinos had a 4.02 ERA (5.52 FIP), 1.24 WHIP, 20 walks and 31 strikeouts in 62 2/3 innings. The weak strikeout rate alone should turn off most fantasy managers, and he's unlikely to make many more starts, if any at all, for the Braves.

Mon Jul 24 202312:17Braves Claim Yonny Chirinos Off Waivers
The Atlanta Braves claimed right-hander Yonny Chirinos off waivers from the Tampa Bay Rays on Sunday, and he'll be used as a starter with his new team. Chirinos pitched effectively in three of the four starts he made for the Rays this year and pitched into the sixth inning in each of those starts. In a corresponding move to make room for Chirinos on the roster, right-hander Michael Soroka was optioned to the minors. In 15 appearances for Tampa this year, Chirinos had a 4.02 ERA (5.52 FIP), 1.24 WHIP, 20 walks and 31 strikeouts in 62 2/3 innings pitched. The 29-year-old may see a start this week, but it remains to be seen how many more starts he'll make with the Braves once lefty Max Fried (forearm) returns soon from the injured list.

Mon Jul 17 202314:04Rays Designate Yonny Chirinos For Assignment
The Tampa Bay Rays designated right-hander Yonny Chirinos for assignment on Monday. Chirinos gets the boot off the team's 40-man roster to begin the week after going 4-4 with a 4.02 ERA (5.52 FIP), 1.24 WHIP, 20 walks and 31 strikeouts in 62 2/3 innings pitched over 15 appearances (four starts) for the Rays. In 4 2/3 frames of relief against the Kansas City Royals on Sunday, he allowed three runs on three homers while walking none and striking out one. Chirinos really struggled in his four starts this year, allowing 17 runs (15 earned) on 23 hits while walking eight and fanning 10 in 21 innings. The Rays won't need the 29-year-old now that left-hander Shane McClanahan (back) has returned from the injured list.

Thu Jun 29 202309:23Zack Littell Opening On Thursday, Yonny Chirinos To Follow
Tampa Bay Rays righty hurler Zack Littell will start Thursday's matchup against Brandon Pfaadt and the Arizona Diamondbacks, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports. The 27-year-old won't be out there for very long, as he hasn't thrown more than 2 2/3 innings in any appearance this season. It'll be Yonny Chirinos who gets the bulk of the innings on Thursday. The five-year veteran has posted a 3.91 ERA, 1.14 WHIP, and 11.6% strikeout rate with a 3-3 record over 11 games and four starts this season. Chirinos doesn't have much value in most leagues, and fantasy managers should only roster him in deep and AL-only formats.

Sun Jun 25 202310:08Yonny Chirinos Shelled For Season-Worst Eight Runs
Tampa Bay Rays right-handed pitcher Yonny Chirinos threw 5 1/3 innings, giving up eight runs on nine hits and two walks in Saturday's 9-4 loss to the Kansas City Royals. The 29-year-old struck out three batters and took his third loss of the season. Despite being one of Saturday's top streaming options on the slate, Chirinos busted in dramatic fashion in a favorable situation. The soft-tosser holds a large discrepancy between his ERA and xERA this year and the floodgates opened up in this one. Chirinos carries a deceptive 3.91 ERA and 1.14 WHIP considering his dreary 23:16 K:BB over 48 1/3 innings. Fantasy managers might want to think twice before turning to the righty in another seemingly decent spot scheduled against the Seattle Mariners on Friday.

Thu Jun 8 202312:52Yonny Chirinos Called Up To Start Thursday
The Tampa Bay Rays recalled right-hander Yonny Chirinos from Triple-A Durham on Thursday and optioned pitcher Cooper Criswell to the minors in a corresponding move. Chirinos will make the start on Thursday in the series finale against the Minnesota Twins, pushing Tyler Glasnow back to Friday against the Texas Rangers. Chirinos has been very solid for the Rays this year, going 2-1 with a 2.79 ERA (4.67 FIP), 0.97 WHIP, 11 walks and 11 strikeouts in 29 innings over seven appearances (one start). However, the 29-year-old Venezuelan hurler has been a bit lucky and allowed three runs while walking four in 5 1/3 innings in his lone start on May 5 against the New York Yankees. Chirinos will be a poor streaming option that probably won't provide much length.

Tue May 16 202312:18Jalen Beeks To Open, Yonny Chirinos Serving As Bulk Reliever
Tampa Bay Rays left-hander Jalen Beeks will once again serve as the team's opener on Tuesday against the New York Mets, with right-hander Yonny Chirinos expected to work the bulk innings in relief. Beeks has gone at least two innings in five of his outings this year, including in his last two appearances, but the 29-year-old southpaw won't be of any use as a DFS streamer as the opener. Chirinos will be making his fourth appearance after joining the Rays' rotation, but three of his four outings have been as the bulk reliever. The 29-year-old has a solid 2.22 ERA and 0.99 WHIP in 24 1/3 innings, but he's walked 10 and struck out only nine in his six appearances. Chirinos will be a shaky fantasy play against the Mets.

Wed May 10 202312:30Yonny Chirinos To Serve In Bulk Role Against O's
Tampa Bay Rays pitcher Jalen Beeks will serve as the opener on Wednesday against the Baltimore Orioles, while right-hander Yonny Chirinos will serve in the bulk role. Chirinos made his first start of the season last weekend and allowed three runs on three hits while walking four in 5 1/3 innings against the New York Yankees. But the 29-year-old entered that outing with a pristine 0.64 ERA and 0.57 WHIP in 14 relief innings, so he's pitched great for the most part in 2023. The Rays will likely continue to use Chirinos in both roles as the season progresses. He'll obviously be more attractive as a streamer on Wednesday than Beeks, but it's also not the greatest of matchups.

Tue Sep 6 202216:20Yonny Chirinos Activated From Injured List
The Tampa Bay Rays activated right-hander Yonny Chirinos (elbow) from the 60-day injured list on Tuesday and placed right-hander Drew Rasmussen on the paternity list in a corresponding move. Chirinos has Tommy John surgery in August of 2020 and hasn't pitched in the big leagues since. In three different minor league stops during his rehab outing, he had a 5.12 ERA and 1.24 WHIP while striking out 14 and walking six in 19 1/3 innings over nine appearances (five starts). Given the 28-year-old's long layoff, he's unlikely to be used all that often down the stretch, but he could serve as the bulk pitcher behind JT Chargois on Tuesday against the Boston Red Sox after Rasmussen was scratched.

Sat Aug 20 202211:20Yonny Chirinos Tosses Three Innings At Triple-A
Tampa Bay Rays right-hander Yonny Chirinos (elbow) made his first minor league rehab start with Triple-A Durham on Friday and allowed an earned run on one hit while walking two and striking out one in three innings of work. Chirinos hasn't pitched in the big leagues since 2020, when he made just three starts for Tampa. Since he's been out for such an extended period of time, he'll likely require more time in the minor leagues, and it remains to be seen if he'll be an option for the Rays rotation down the stretch. In 2019, the 28-year-old had a 3.85 ERA, a 1.05 WHIP and a 114:28 K:BB in 26 appearances (18 starts). It's a long shot that Chirinos will provide any fantasy value in 2022.

Sat Mar 19 202210:51Rays Place Yonny Chirinos On 60-Day Injured List
The Tampa Bay Rays placed right-hander Yonny Chirinos (elbow) on the 60-day injured list on Friday to make room for outfielder Luke Raley, whom the Rays acquired in a trade with the Los Angeles Dodgers. Chirinos had Tommy John surgery in August of 2020 and is also recovering from surgery last September to fix a broken elbow. The valuable swing man is unlikely to be ready until closer to midseason, so he isn't fantasy relevant in spring drafts. The 28-year-old made just three starts for Tampa in 2021. Chirinos has been effective in his three seasons with the Rays, posting a 3.65 ERA and 1.59 WHIP with 199 strikeouts and 57 walks in 234 1/3 innings over 47 outings (28 starts).

Mon Feb 22 202114:54Archer eager to re-establish himself with AL champion Rays
Chris Archer is back in familiar surroundings, eager to re-establish himself with the Tampa Bay Rays. The 32-year-old right-hander is three seasons removed from a being a two-time All-Star and the ace of a rotation the AL champions are revamping after losing to the Los Angeles Dodgers in the World Series last fall. Archer, who was with Tampa Bay from 2012 to 2018, signed a one-year, $6.5 million contract to rejoin the Rays after missing all of the 2020 pandemic-shortened season with the Pittsburgh Pirates while recovering from surgery to relieve symptoms of neurogenic thoracic outlet syndrome. The Rays, who have made the playoffs the past two seasons, traded him to the Pirates on July 31, 2018, as part of a deal that brought Tampa Bay right-hander Tyler Glasnow, outfielder Austin Meadows and minor league pitching prospect Shane Baz. Archer hasn’t pitched in a major league game since August 2019. He went 6-12 with a 4.92 ERA over 33 starts with Pittsburgh and is excited to have a second... [More]
Sat Jan 16 202100:58AL champion Rays avoid arbitration with Glasnow, 3 others
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) — The Tampa Bay Rays agreed to terms on contracts for next season with four of the team’s six arbitration-eligible players, including right-handed pitcher Tyler Glasnow. Outfielder Manuel Margot, infielder Joey Wendle and right-hander Yonny Chirinos also reached agreements Friday, leaving first baseman Ji-Man Choi and left-hander Ryan Yarbrough as the only members of the AL champions heading to arbitration hearings. Choi, who's seeking $2.45 million while the Rays are offering $1.85 million earned the $427,148 prorated portion of his scheduled $1,150,000 salary and earned bonus while playing solid defense and batting .230 with three homers and 16 RBIs in 42 games last season. He hit .250 with two homers and four RBIs in 40 at-bats during the postseason. The Rays are offering Yarbrough $2.3 million after the left-hander made the $214,259 prorated portion of his $578,500 salary for last season. Yarbrough, a candidate for the starting rotation in 2021, is asking $3.1... [More]

Thu Oct 1 202016:57Yankees vs. Rays: the Savages vs. the Stable
NEW YORK (AP) — The Stable vs. The Savages. Just another way to say top-seeded Tampa Bay and the No. 5 Yankees meet in the best-of-five AL Division Series starting Monday at neutral site San Diego. Tampa Bay players wear blue T-shirts with four horses lined up behind a fence, a reference to Rays manager Kevin Cash declaring “I’ve got a whole damn stable full of guys that throw 98 miles an hour” in response to Aroldis Chapman throwing a 101 mph pitch near Mike Brosseau’s head on Sept. 1. New York sold “Savages in the Box” shirts for $29.99 each last year, memorializing manager Aaron Boone’s infamous comment on his batters during a profane rant at rookie umpire Brennan Miller in a July 18 doubleheader opener against the Rays. “That’s the entertainment business of it. At the end of the day, it’s series like this that make the statement, not anything else,” Yankees slugger Giancarlo Stanton said Thursday. Tampa Bay swept two games from Toronto in the first round for its first postseason series... [More]
