Fri Mar 1519:09Nestor Cortes Gets Opening Day Start
New York Yankees left-hander Nestor Cortes has been tabbed as the club's Opening Day starter against the Houston Astros on the road on March 28. It was recently reported that Marcus Stroman did not wish to alter his spring schedule to line up for Opening Day, and manager Aaron Boone said Carlos Rodon was not a candidate. With Gerrit Cole (shoulder) on the shelf, it's Cortes who dealt with his fair share of injuries last season, limiting him to just 12 starts. He worked to a 4.97 ERA and a 17.7% K-BB% in that time, just one season after breaking out with a 2.44 ERA across 28 starts in the 2022 campaign. ATC is projecting a bounce-back in 2024 for the 29-year-old, who projects for a 3.97 ERA and a quality 17.8% K-BB% across 26 outings (23 starts) this season.

Thu Mar 700:05Nestor Cortes Jr. Lasts Four Innings In Latest Spring Start
New York Yankees starting pitcher Nestor Cortes Jr. allowed just one hit a solo home run during Sunday's Spring Training game against the Detroit Tigers. He also issued just one walk, struck out three batters, and lasted four innings, which was an increase over his previous start (2.2 innings). Despite the somewhat mixed results, there's no denying that Cortes pitched much better this Sunday than he did a week earlier against the Minnesota Twins (two runs, seven hits). Fantasy managers should consider the fact that RotoBaller's MLB experts rank Cortes 62nd among pitchers and 230th overall for 2024.

Fri Feb 1613:29Nestor Cortes Expects To Be Ready For Opening Day
New York Yankees left-hander Nestor Cortes (shoulder) expects to be ready for the start of the 2024 regular season. He arrived to the team's spring training facilities early because he wasn't getting over the hump with regards to his rehab for a left-shoulder strain that ended his 2023 campaign early, but the team's training staff has since helped him get there. Cortes is feeling good in camp now and is currently scheduled to pitch in one of the team's exhibition games in Mexico City on March 24-25. The 29-year-old southpaw made just 12 starts in 2023 due to his shoulder injury and doesn't have a ton of fantasy upside as more of a crafty soft-tosser who relies more on inducing weak contact. Coming off injury, Cortes should be considered a late-round flier for fantasy managers.

Thu Feb 1517:15Nestor Cortes Throwing Off A Mound
New York Yankees left-hander Nestor Cortes (shoulder) said that he's already thrown four live batting practice sessions in spring training as he prepares for the start of the 2024 regular season. The 29-year-old southpaw made his first All-Star team in 2022 but made just 12 starts in 2023 in his third year in the Bronx due to a left rotator-cuff strain. But it appears that he has had a pretty normal offseason and should be ready for Opening Day, barring any setbacks. Cortes struggled when he was on the mound last year, going 5-2 with a 4.97 ERA (4.49 FIP) and 1.25 WHIP while walking 20 and striking out 67 in 63 1/3 innings. The crafty left-hander could bounce back with better health in 2024, but the soft-tosser has less room for error than most pitchers and relies more on deception and inducing weak contact.

Fri Aug 11 202320:14Nestor Cortes Won't Throw For 3-4 Weeks
New York Yankees left-hander Nestor Cortes (shoulder), who landed on the 15-day injured list on Friday, said he won't throw for the next three to four weeks, but he's still hoping to return this year. "It's definitely tough. If we're going to make a run at it, we need everyone healthy, not only myself but Carlos Rodon and all the other pitchers," Cortes said. The 28-year-old southpaw just returned for a stint on the IL and looked great last weekend, but now he's dealing with a left rotator-cuff strain and might not be able to make it back at all to close out the season. It's been a disappointing, injury filled 2023 for Cortes after he made his first All-Star team in 2022. Fantasy managers that have been hanging onto Cortes in deep-mixed leagues can probably let go at this point.

Fri Aug 11 202316:12Nestor Cortes Goes Back On Injured List
The New York Yankees placed left-hander Nestor Cortes (shoulder) on the 15-day injured list (retroactive to Aug. 8) on Friday with a left rotator-cuff strain and recalled right-handers Jhony Brito and Randy Vasquez from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre in corresponding moves. Cortes looked good in his first start back from the injured list last Saturday, but he'll now return to the IL after just spending over a month with a left-shoulder strain. It's obviously pretty terrible news for the Yankees and Cortes, and there's certainly a chance that he won't be able to make it back before the end of the 2023 regular season. The 28-year-old Cuban southpaw has an ERA just south of 5.00 on the year with 67 strikeouts in 63 1/3 innings over his 12 starts. Brito is most likely to take Cortes' spot in New York's rotation, at least in the short term.

Wed Aug 2 202322:55Nestor Cortes To Start Saturday
New York Yankees left-hander Nestor Cortes (shoulder) will return from the 60-day injured list and start on Saturday against the Houston Astros, according to manager Aaron Boone. Left-hander Carlos Rodon will go on Sunday. Cortes was originally to make his final minor-league rehab start on Wednesday, but he instead rejoined the Yankees and is ready to return this weekend. The 28-year-old southpaw hasn't pitched in the big leagues since late May due to a left rotator-cuff strain, so fantasy managers may want to temper expectations in his first start back, especially in a tough matchup against Houston. But Cortes is worth a pickup in deep-mixed leagues for those needing pitching depth the rest of the way.

Wed Aug 2 202317:09Nestor Cortes To Start This Weekend
New York Yankees left-hander Nestor Cortes (shoulder) said he will start for the Yankees this weekend against the Houston Astros. Cortes was supposed to make his final minor-league rehab start on Wednesday for Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, but he has instead rejoined the Yankees and will return from the injured list to start this weekend. The 28-year-old southpaw has been sidelined since late May with a strained left rotator cuff, so tossing him right back into starting lineups this weekend in a tough matchup against Houston wouldn't be the most prudent move. Cortes hasn't been at his All-Star form from a year ago, but he has the ability to help fantasy managers in deep-mixed leagues the rest of the season in New York's starting rotation.

Mon Jul 31 202309:28Nestor Cortes Jr. To Make Another Rehab Start
New York Yankees starting pitcher Nestor Cortes Jr. (shoulder) is set to make another minor league rehab start on Monday. The left-hander looked sharp during his second rehab start on Friday. It appears the team wants to give Cortes one more start before bringing him back to the big league rotation. The 28-year-old only threw 49 pitches during his last outing, so they probably want him to increase that this time around. Fantasy managers should expect Cortes to be ready after his next rehab start.

Sat Jul 29 202312:26Nestor Cortes Looks Good In Second Rehab Start
New York Yankees left-hander Nestor Cortes (shoulder) looked sharp in his second minor-league rehab start on Friday for Double-A Somerset, throwing four scoreless innings over 49 pitches while allowing two hits, walking one and striking out five. The 28-year-old southpaw is expected to make his third and final rehab start at some point next week before rejoining New York's starting rotation in August. Before landing on the injured list, Cortes was 5-2 with a 5.16 ERA with 59 strikeouts over 59 1/3 innings over 11 starts. He wasn't as strong as he was when he was an All-Star in 2022, but Cortes thinks he can regain that form down the stretch this year as the Yankees look to get out of the cellar in the American League East.

Fri Jul 28 202320:46Nestor Cortes Making Another Rehab Start Friday
New York Yankees left-hander Nestor Cortes (shoulder) is making another minor-league rehab start on Friday for Double-A Somerset. Manager Aaron Boone said the team will likely have Cortes throw in another rehab game before they activate him from the injured list. The 28-year-old southpaw made his first rehab start last Sunday and gave up a run on four hits while striking out four in 2 1/3 innings for Somerset. As long as he doesn't have any setbacks in his final two rehab starts, Cortes could return to the team's starting rotation in early August. Cortes hasn't pitched for the Yankees since May 30 and was 5-2 with a 5.16 ERA, 1.29 WHIP and 59 strikeouts in 59 1/3 innings (11 starts) at the time of his injury. He could be an option for those in deep-mixed leagues once he's back.

Wed Jul 19 202321:00Nestor Cortes Making First Rehab Start Sunday
New York Yankees manager Aaron Boone said that left-hander Nestor Cortes (shoulder) will make his first minor-league rehab start on Sunday, not Saturday, and Boone expects Cortes to need three starts before rejoining the team's starting rotation. Barring a setback in the minors, Cortes should be able to come off the injured list when he's first eligible on Aug. 3. The 28-year-old Cuban southpaw will be looking to get back to his All-Star form of 2022 when he returns in the second half for the Yanks. He has a disappointing 5.16 ERA (4.61 FIP) and 1.29 WHIP in 11 starts in 2023, he's also walked only 19 and struck out 59 in 59 1/3 innings, and there will be time for him to finish off the year strong if he can avoid getting hurt again.

Sat Jul 15 202312:51Nestor Cortes Expects To Rejoin Rotation First Week In August
New York Yankees left-hander Nestor Cortes (shoulder) threw 20 pitches in a live batting practice session at Yankee Stadium on July 9 and said he "definitely didn't feel any pain," noting his work to correct his arm path and increase mobility seems to be working. He threw another live BP session at the team's spring training complex on July 13 without any issues. The 28-year-old southpaw is scheduled to throw to live hitters again on Monday, and manager Aaron Boone said after that, Cortes will likely begin a minor-league rehab assignment. Barring setbacks, Cortes expects to rejoin the starting rotation in the first week of August. He's been on the 15-day injured list since June 8 with a left rotator-cuff strain, and he thinks it may have been caused by hurrying back from a spring hamstring injury.

Sun Jul 9 202316:14Nestor Cortes "Pain-Free" After Simulated Game
New York Yankees starting pitcher Nestor Cortes (shoulder) participated in a simulated game on Sunday morning, throwing 20 pitches. Things turned out well, with the left-handed reporting afterward he was "totally pain-free." The 28-year-old, who was recently moved to the 60-day injured list, has been out of the mix since early June because of shoulder soreness. His next step will be to face live hitters on Thursday before tossing again on Monday. Fortunately, Cortes is moving in a favorable direction, although he's still not expected back until the first week of August. Of course, fantasy managers will remain optimistic he'll play better than he did early in the season.

Fri Jul 7 202317:19Carlos Rodon Activated, Nestor Cortes Moved To 60-Day IL
The New York Yankees officially activated left-hander Carlos Rodon (back) from the 60-day injured list on Friday and transferred left-hander Nestor Cortes (shoulder) to the 60-day injured list in a corresponding move. Rodon will make his long-awaited debut for the Yankees on Friday against the visiting Chicago Cubs. An All-Star the last two years with the San Francisco Giants, Rodon is a fantasy ace when healthy and could push fantasy squads over the top in the second half of the season if he can stay on the field. Cortes is making progress from a left-shoulder injury, but fantasy managers won't be getting him back until Aug. 3 now. The 28-year-old southpaw will face live hitters this weekend and may not be far from a minor-league rehab assignment.

Sun Jul 2 202315:40Nestor Cortes To Throw Another Bullpen Monday
New York Yankees left-hander Nestor Cortes (shoulder), who threw his first bullpen session on Friday since landing on the injured list on June 8, will throw another bullpen on Monday. Cortes was able to throw 20 pitches in his bullpen on Friday, mostly consisting of his fastball and cutter. The 28-year-old southpaw is feeling better while trying to recover from a left rotator-cuff strain, but it's highly unlikely that he'll return to the Yankees' starting rotation before the All-Star break in mid-July. Cortes still needs to face live hitters and go on a minor-league rehab assignment, and there just isn't enough time before the break. He hasn't been as good as last year when he made his first All-Star team, and he had a 5.47 ERA with 10 walks and 24 K's in 26 1/3 innings over five starts in May before he landed on the IL.

Sun Jul 2 202300:52Nestor Cortes Scheduled For Another Bullpen Session
New York Yankees starting pitcher Nestor Cortes (shoulder) threw in the bullpen on Friday. Fortunately, things went well, with the left-hander reporting he didn't experience any pain. According to manager Aaron Boone, Cortes is scheduled for at least one more bullpen session, which may come as early as Monday, before advancing to live batting practices and, eventually, a rehab assignment. Cortes certainly lost a step in 2023 and was sitting on a 5.16 ERA before going down. Although he probably won't be back prior to the All-Star break, he's at least moving in a positive direction.

Fri Jun 30 202321:49Nestor Cortes Throws Bullpen Friday
New York Yankees left-hander Nestor Cortes (shoulder) threw a bullpen session on Friday before the team's game against the St. Louis Cardinals. Cortes has been on the injured list for three weeks with a left rotator-cuff strain, and he's just now back to throwing bullpen sessions. The next step will be facing live hitters before a minor-league rehab assignment, but there probably isn't enough time for him to return to New York's starting rotation before the All-Star break in mid-July. After making his first All-Star appearance in 2022, the 28-year-old southpaw has struggled a bit this year to the tune of a 5.16 ERA (4.59 FIP), 1.29 WHIP, 19 walks and 59 strikeouts in 59 1/3 innings over his 11 starts.

Wed Jun 28 202312:06Nestor Cortes To Throw Bullpen Session Soon
New York Yankees left-hander Nestor Cortes (shoulder) is set to throw a bullpen session on Friday or Saturday, which will be his first since he was shut down with a rotator-cuff strain in the first week of June. The Yankees have increasing confidence that a cortisone injection will be enough to cure Cortes' shoulder issue. "Everything feels really good," Cortes said Tuesday after a light day of throwing. "I feel like I've about turned the corner from feeling like 'Ehh' to now feeling great." He has stretched out to throwing from 105 feet and will continue to build up his volume before getting on the mound. If he continues to progress as hoped, Cortes could be back with the Yankees in mid-to-late July.

Sun Jun 25 202300:33Nestor Cortes May Toss From A Mound Soon
According to Yankees manager Aaron Boone, left-hander Nestor Cortes "is about a week away" from throwing from a mound. The 28-year-old has been battling shoulder inflammation, an injury that landed him on the injured list nearly a month ago. Cortes, who is 5-2 with a 5.16 ERA and 59 strikeouts in 2023, has some hurdles to clear before he's ready to return. But in the meantime, fantasy managers should keep him stashed, especially since he could turn things around once he's 100%.
