Wed Jul 7 202116:58Orioles 3B Franco placed on IL with ankle injury
BALTIMORE (AP) — The Orioles have placed third baseman Maikel Franco on the 10-day injured list with a problematic ankle sprain that left the team shorthanded when he was unable to play. Franco missed four straight games — including an entire series against the Angels — after hurting his right ankle in a game at Houston on June 30. Manager Brandon Hyde hoped to have him back Wednesday, but Franco wasn't healthy enough to suit up against Toronto. “We've been playing with just the infielders that were on the field,” Hyde said. “If something happens, we would have be creative. We felt like he's just not ready to go yet. The ankle is still bothering him.” Signed as a free agent in March, Franco is batting .221 with nine homers and 42 RBIs in 77 games. Infielder Kelvin Gutierrez was recalled from Triple-A Norfolk to fill out the infield. ___ More AP MLB: https://apnews.com/hub/MLB and https://twitter.com/AP_Sports
Sat Jul 3 202113:27Royals ship INF Kelvin Gutierrez to Orioles for cash
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Royals traded infielder Kelvin Gutierrez to the Baltimore Orioles for cash on Saturday. The 26-year-old Gutierrez appeared in 38 games for the Royals this season, hitting .215 with four doubles, two triples, a homer and eight RBIs. He ultimately was caught in a numbers game as the Royals went with a different combination of infielders and Gutierrez was designated for assignment on June 28. Gutierrez was signed out of the Dominican Republic by the Nationals in 2013, then traded to Kansas City in 2018 in a four-player deal that sent closer Kelvin Herrera to Washington. He made his big league debut the following year, appearing in 20 games, but was limited to four games last season due to injuries. Orioles third baseman Maikel Franco is day-to-day with a right ankle injury after rolling it Wednesday in Houston. Franco has been doing rehab work and manager Brandon Hyde said recently he could be ready off the bench. ___ More AP MLB: https://apnews.com/hub/MLB and https://twitter.com/AP_Sports
Sun Jun 27 202118:50Gallo homers again, Lyles strong as Rangers beat Royals 4-1
ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Joey Gallo homered again, Jordan Lyles pitched seven strong innings after getting bumped from the rotation for one start, and the Texas Rangers finished a three-game sweep with a 4-1 victory over the Kansas City Royals on Sunday. The last-place Rangers have won three consecutive games for the first time since sweeping Houston at home from May 21-23, which they followed with an 0-9 trip on the way to tying a franchise record with 16 straight road losses. Texas is headed on the road again this time, a six-game trip that starts Tuesday at Oakland. The Rangers had a 3-19 slide after the sweep of Houston but now have won five of seven. “I’ve told this team many times, we’re obviously young, there’s obviously a lot of growth and development going on,” manager Chris Woodward said. “At the same time, we’re competitive. We want to win. What we went through before was kind of important for us to get through and come out the other side.” Whit Merrifield had an RBI single among... [More]

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Royals reinstated outfielder Jorge Soler from the injured list and optioned infielder Kelvin Gutierrez on Monday before starting their final homestand with three games against the St. Louis Cardinals. Soler was hopeful that he could return for the final week of the season after hurting his oblique. The slugger has failed to match his breakout 2019 season, when he played all 162 games and hit a club-record 48 homers, but has still hit .235 with eight homers and 22 RBIs for a club that is in rebuilding mode.
