Sun Apr 709:23Michael King Earns Second Win Saturday
San Diego Padres starting pitcher Michael King cruised to his second win of the season on Saturday in a 4-0 win over the Giants. Jurickson Profar staked him four runs in the top of the first inning with a grand slam, then King went seven strong innings allowing just four hits and one walk while striking out four. It was certainly cleaner than his last outing in which he also faced the Giants, when the 28-year-old lasted just four innings and walked seven batters. King came over from the Yankees in the offseason and was somewhat of a sleeper pick in fantasy drafts after posting some great numbers as a starter down the stretch in 2023, twirling a 2.23 ERA, 1.14 WHIP, and a 25.8% K-BB% over 40 1/3 IP. Hopefully this start gets him back on track for 2024 and the command issues are behind him.

Wed Mar 1314:59Michael King Excelling In Cactus League Action
San Diego Padres right-hander Michael Kinghas been very good in limited Cactus League action this spring. The 28-year-old has yet to allow an earned runs with four strikeouts against zero walks in five frames to begin his spring. Acquired from the Yankees in a trade that sent superstar Juan Soto to the Bronx, King worked to a tidy 2.75 ERA across 49 appearances (nine starts) in the 2023 season, one year after posting a stellar 2.29 ERA in 34 relief outings with the Yankees in the 2022 campaign. All told, King sports a 3.38 ERA across 115 outings (19 starts) in the big leagues and ATC projects him to toss a 3.59 ERA alongside an 18.4% K-BB% across 24 starts and 32 appearances in the 2024 campaign. His fantasy stock is certainly on the rise as he projects to be the No. 3 starter for the Padres in the upcoming season.

Thu Jan 1122:54Michael King Avoids Arbitration With New Club
New San Diego Padres right-hander Michael King and the team agreed to a one-year, $3.15 million deal for 2024 on Thursday to avoid salary arbitration. King was part of the package sent to San Diego when the New York Yankees acquired outfielder Juan Soto in December. The 28-year-old was moved from the bullpen to the starting rotation in 2023 in the Bronx and delivered to the tune of a strong 2.75 ERA and 1.15 WHIP with 127 strikeouts in 49 outings (nine starts) over 104 2/3 innings pitched. He's expected to stay in a starting role for the Friars in his first year with the team and will have plenty of fantasy appeal with an upgrade in home ballpark. No matter what role King had in 2023, he was effective with a nearly 30 percent strikeout rate.

Wed Dec 6 202323:37Padres Acquire Michael King, Kyle Higashioka, Others From Yankees
The San Diego Padres officially sent outfielders Juan Soto and Trent Grisham to the New York Yankees in a blockbuster trade on Wednesday in exchange for right-handers Michael King, Drew Thorpe, Jhony Brito, and Randy Vasquez, and catcher Kyle Higashioka. The Padres cleared payroll space and acquired some much-needed pitching help with this massive deal. King, 28, could give the team a solid mid-rotation starter, but he struggled in the big leagues before 2023 and has already dealt with a major elbow injury. Thorpe, 23, was the Yankees' No. 5 prospect and could be a rotation option down the line, but he has yet to pitch above Double-A. Brito, 25, doesn't miss many bats and is likely ticketed for a relief role after struggling as a starter in the majors. Vasquez, 25, has durability questions but could serve as a back-end starter for the Friars. And Higashioka, 34, has some decent power and should serve as ... [More]

Sat Oct 14 202316:40Michael King To Remain In Starting Rotation
New York Yankees pitcher Michael King is expected to remain in the starting rotation entering next season. The right-hander moved into the rotation in mid-August of this season. He posted an impressive 1.88 ERA, 1.10 WHIP and 48/9 K/BB ratio across 38 1/3 innings (eight starts) down the stretch of the season. It's a small sample size, but the Yankees like what they've seen from the 28-year-old. He could be a viable option for the Yankees in the rotation next season. Fantasy managers should consider King a possible under-the-radar pickup for 2024.

He threw 101 pitches, 75 for strikes. King has pitched well enough as a starter to set himself up for a spot in the New York rotation next year, and he's given fantasy managers something to look at in the offseason. Thu Sep 14 202312:51Michael King Built Up For 85-90 Pitches For Thursday's Outing
New York Yankees right-hander Michael King is built up to go around 85 to 90 pitches in his start on Thursday against the division-rival Boston Red Sox, according to pitching coach Matt Blake. King's last four appearances have been starts and he went 79 pitches in his last outing while striking out nine in five innings of work against the first-place Milwaukee Brewers. Of his 45 appearances for the Yankees this year, he's only made five starts, but he's been great in those five starts. In 18 2/3 innings over his five starts, King has a 1.93 ERA on six runs (four earned) and 17 hits (one homer) while walking three and striking out 24. The 28-year-old also has six saves and a 2.82 ERA and 1.13 WHIP on the year, making him a fine streaming option in fantasy against Boston to close out the series.

Wed Aug 30 202316:26Michael King To Make Another Start Sunday
New York Yankees right-hander Michael King is lined up to make another start for the Yankees this Sunday against the Houston Astros on the road. King has earned another start for the Bombers after pitching four scoreless innings while striking out five during a 61-pitch outing against the Detroit Tigers on Tuesday. The 28-year-old has been excellent in his fifth year in the Bronx, as he's sporting a sharp 2.96 ERA (3.36 FIP), 1.15 WHIP, six saves, 25 walks and a career-high 87 strikeouts in 73 innings over 43 appearances (three starts). In his three starts, he's given up just three runs (two earned) while striking out 11 in 8 2/3 innings. King could go a bit deeper in his fourth start this Sunday, but the matchup is a much scarier one against the 'Stros.

Wed Jun 14 202300:42Michael King Earns Fourth Save Of Season Tuesday
New York Yankees relief pitcher Michael King earned his fourth save of the season in Tuesday's 7-6 win over the Mets. King came on to pitch the ninth inning up by one and shut the door with a 1-2-3 inning and a strikeout. King has seen more use in high-leverage situations this season alongside Clay Holmes, who got the Yankees out of an eighth-inning jam in Tuesday's game. King has pitched well overall, converting four of six save opportunities with a 2.19 ERA in 37 innings pitched. While Holmes came into the season as the team's primary closer, it does appear that King may see a number of save opportunities himself, making him worth a roster spot in at least all roto leagues at this time.

Tue May 16 202300:37Michael King Earns Four-Out Save Monday
New York Yankees relief pitcher Michael King rebounded from his last appearance and picked up his third save of the season in Monday's 7-4 win over the Blue Jays. King came in to pitch the eighth inning up by three with two outs and runners on second and third. He got out of the jam with a groundout and stayed on to pitch the ninth, delivering a 1-2-3 inning on three more groundouts. The 27-year-old has stepped into higher-leverage situations lately after Clay Holmes failed to perform well in the closer's role and has converted all three save opportunities with a 2.38 ERA and a 9.53 K/9 rate. Additionally, the Yankees have not been afraid to have him pitch multiple innings. Based on his performance and increased role, King looks like the arm to roster in fantasy leagues at this time.

Wed May 3 202300:42Michael King Earns Five-Out Save Tuesday
New York Yankees relief pitcher Michael King certainly earned his second save of the season in Tuesday's 4-2 win over the Guardians. King entered the game in the top of the eighth inning up by one with one out and a runner on first. He quickly ended the half with two strikeouts and stayed in to pitch the ninth. He got the first two outs on a strikeout and groundout, allowed a walk, and got the final out on a groundout. The 27-year-old has pitched quite well this season, compiling a 1.56 ERA with a 10.38 K/9 rate. Clay Holmes has been inconsistent as the team's primary closer and had another meltdown in Monday's loss, so fantasy managers should keep an eye on King.

Fri Apr 28 202308:05Michael King Converts Thursday's Save Opportunity
New York Yankees right-hander Michael King got the save opportunity in Thursday's game against the Texas Rangers. He pitched the last 2.1 innings of the contest, allowing no runs or hits while striking out two and walking one to preserve the 4-2 lead, picking up his first save of the season. King has been a trustworthy arm thus far in the Yankees pen, posting a 1.72 ERA, 26.2% strikeout rate, 1.15 WHIP, and one hold across 15.2 innings. Clay Holmes, who owns a 3.72 ERA himself, is the club's closer, so fantasy owners can't expect the 27-year-old to earn many more saves. But King's probably a great asset in hold leagues for the remainder of the season.

Thu Jan 26 202313:24Michael King Expects To Be Ready For Opening Day
New York Yankees relief pitcher Michael King (elbow) said that he expects to be ready for Opening Day after missing the final two-plus months of last season with a fractured right elbow. If healthy in 2023, King will likely be used as a multi-inning stopper in the Yankees' bullpen in the later innings in front of closer Clay Holmes. Before he was hurt in 2022, King was excellent for the Yanks, going 6-3 with a 2.29 ERA (2.23 FIP), 1.00 WHIP, his first career save, 66 strikeouts and 16 walks in 51 relief innings over a career-high 34 relief appearances. The 27-year-old right-hander may be eased in initially, but he should carry plenty of value in fantasy leagues that reward holds.

Sat Jul 23 202208:25Michael King Fractures Elbow, Likely Done For The Year
New York Yankees right-hander Michael King (elbow) has been diagnosed with a fractured right elbow and he is expected to miss the remainder of the 2022 season. King suffered the injury during Friday night's game against the Baltimore Orioles. It occurred during a pitch to Ramon Urias in the eighth inning. King instantly started favoring his right arm after the pitch. He was removed from the game after being looked at by trainers. King has been fantastic this season, pitching to a 2.29 ERA and a 1.00 WHIP while recording 16 holds across 34 appearances. The Yankees will now need to lean more on other relievers like Jonathan Loaisiga and Aroldis Chapman in front of closer Clay Holmes, though it's also likely the team adds another solid bullpen arm before the trade deadline.
