Wed Dec 6 202323:23Yankees Complete Trade To Acquire Juan Soto, Trent Grisham
The New York Yankees have completed a blockbuster trade on Wednesday night to acquire outfielders Juan Soto and Trent Grisham from the San Diego Padres in exchange for right-handed pitchers Michael King, Drew Thorpe, Jhony Brito, and Randy Vasquez, and catcher Kyle Higashioka. The 25-year-old left-handed-hitting Soto will head to the Bronx and join slugger Aaron Judge in the middle of the Yankees' lineup as they look to get back to the postseason in 2024. Now the question will becomes, will the Yankees lock Soto up to a massive long-term contract extension to keep him around past the 2024 campaign? Soto hit .275 with a career-high 35 homers, 109 RBI and an MLB-leading 132 walks last season for the Padres, and it's not crazy to think his numbers at Yankee Stadium will improve. Grisham, after hitting under .200 in 2023, will become a fourth outfielder/defensive replacement in pinstripes.

Wed Dec 6 202316:13Trent Grisham Expected To Be Shipped To Yankees
Only medicals and minor details remain as the New York Yankees look to acquire outfielder Juan Soto from the San Diego Padres, and a deal is expected to be done fairly soon. Once the deal is complete, the Yankees will also receive outfielder Trent Grisham to back up their revamped started outfield of Soto, Aaron Judge and Alex Verdugo. The Padres are expected to receive pitchers Michael King, Drew Thorpe, Jhony Brito and Randy Vasquez and catcher Kyle Higashioka in return in this blockbuster deal. The 27-year-old Grisham will become a fourth outfielder for the Yankees if the trade is completed after hitting under .200 with 13 home runs, 50 RBI, 15 stolen bases and 154 strikeouts in 555 trips to the plate over 153 games played.

Tue Aug 15 202318:16Trent Grisham Sitting Out On Tuesday
San Diego Padres outfielder Trent Grisham is absent from Tuesday's starting lineup versus the Baltimore Orioles. Normally, Grisham is in there against right-handed starters, but it appears he'll get a rest day here. Instead, Ben Gamel will cover right field and bat ninth versus right-hander Jack Flaherty. Fantasy managers should adjust their lineups accordingly with Grisham on the bench. The expectation is that he'll return after this rest day.

Mon Jun 5 202321:14Trent Grisham Scratched Monday
San Diego Padres outfielder Trent Grisham (back) was scratched from his team's lineup ahead of a Monday night matchup against the Chicago Cubs. Grisham is dealing with back spasms, which will hold him out of the series opener against the Cubs. The Padres will turn to Fernando Tatis Jr. in center field while Brandon Dixon will play right. Stay tuned to see if Grisham is able to return to action by Tuesday.

Tue May 30 202323:53Trent Grisham Gets Two Hits, Steals A Few Bags
San Diego Padres outfielder Trent Grisham went 2-for-3 with two stolen bases and a run scored as the team ran away late from the Miami Marlins 9-4 on Tuesday. The southpaw has always shown reverse platoon splits, but Grisham got his knocks versus righties in this one. The center fielder is especially victimizing left-handed pitching for a 317/.429/.585 slash line in 41 at-bats this year. Grisham is a regular player for the Friars, but the two-time Gold Glover is mostly in there for his defensive acumen. The 26-year-old is hitting just .196 with five home runs, 14 RBI, and three stolen bases on 168 at-bats this season. Grisham draws walks at a high 15% clip, but he is not worth rostering in fantasy outside of the deepest of leagues.

Sat May 13 202318:35Trent Grisham Absent From Saturday's Starting Lineup
San Diego Padres outfielder Trent Grisham is taking a spot on the bench to begin Saturday's game against the Los Angeles Dodgers. The Gold Glove caliber fielder is slashing .205/.322/.378 this season with four long balls, 17 runs, and 12 RBI. With lefty Julio Urias on the bump, the left-handed Grisham will hand things over to Adam Engel, who's batting ninth. The 31-year-old has played just two games this year after dealing with an injury. Engel doesn't have a hit yet, but he wasn't much of a threat with the bat in 2022, batting .224 with two homers across 119 games. It's better to stay off of him in favor of a better offensive threat.

Tue May 2 202321:07Trent Grisham Getting A Rest Tuesday
San Diego Padres outfielder Trent Grisham is absent from Tuesday's starting lineup to take on Graham Ashcraft and the Cincinnati Reds. Grisham has appeared in 29 games this season and has been a solid power provider with four homers and a .440 slugging percentage, but he's still just batting .220 with no stolen bases. Jose Azocar will play centerfield instead and bat ninth. The 26-year-old is limited with the bat, as he owns a .256/.275/.308 slash line after posting a .257 average and .629 OPS last season, but he does have five steals across 19 contests. Fantasy managers can leave Azocar on the waiver wire unless steals is a crucial target.

Thu Mar 30 202321:54Trent Grisham Batting Leadoff For Thursday's Opening Day
San Diego Padres outfielder Trent Grisham is leading off the batting order for Thursday's Opening Day game against the Colorado Rockies. The 26-year-old struggled mightily at the dish in 2022, batting a league-worst .184. Although, he still provided 17 homers and seven stolen bases over 152 games with 58 runs and 53 RBI. Grisham also had a fantastic Spring Training, where he slashed .271/.357/.604 with four home runs. If this is a trend that'll continue, fantasy managers might want to think about picking up the lefty on the waiver wire. Grisham will likely contribute double-digit dingers and steals while playing every day, and batting first for one of the best lineups in baseball means plenty of counting stats.

Fri Jan 13 202315:56Trent Grisham Avoids Salary Arbitration
The San Diego Padres and outfielder Trent Grisham avoided salary arbitration on Friday by agreeing to a one-year, $3.175 million deal. Grisham struggled to make contact regularly in his third year with the Friars in 2022, finishing with a .184/.284/.341 slash line, career-low .626 OPS, career-high 17 home runs, 53 RBI, 58 runs scored and seven stolen bases in 524 plate appearances over a career-high 152 games played. The 26-year-old was a liability at the plate, but he did show some signs of life in the postseason and also won his second Gold Glove award on defense. Needless to say, Grisham's fantasy value has dropped significantly heading into 2023, and there's a good chance he'll be benched this year if he doesn't improve.

Thu Dec 29 202222:46Padres Could Trade Ha-Seong Kim, Trent Grisham
The San Diego Padres have publicly downplayed the possibility of trading infielder Ha-Seong Kim or center fielder Trent Grisham this offseason in order to acquire more starting pitching. However, industry sources have indicated that the Padres are open to discussing either player -- Grisham, in particular. The Miami Marlins are a team that could make sense as a trade partner, and San Diego has expressed interest in right-hander Pablo Lopez. He's not eligible for free agency until after 2024. Yu Darvish, Blake Snell, Nick Martinez and Seth Lugo can all test free agency after 2023. Grisham's value plunged in 2022 after he hit .184, including .199 against fastballs. Kim showed improvement from his first MLB season, but he's always likely to be known as a glove-first player.

Mon Oct 10 202211:47Trent Grisham Stays Hot In Game 3 Win
San Diego Padres outfielder Trent Grisham stayed hot in the Game 3 win over the New York Mets on Sunday in the National League Wild-Card Series, going 2-for-2 with an RBI, run scored and a walk in the 6-0 shutout win. Grisham hit an embarrassing .184/.284/.341 with 17 home runs, 53 RBI, 58 runs scored and seven stolen bases in 451 at-bats during the regular season, but he's been a different hitter so far in three postseason games in 2022. In the three games against the Mets over the weekend, he went 4-for-8 with two home runs, three RBI, two walks, two hit by pitches and five runs scored to help the Padres advance to the NL Division Series this week against the division-rival Los Angeles Dodgers. They'll need him to stay hot in order to take down the favored Dodgers.

Mon Jul 25 202211:29Trent Grisham Dealing With Back Stiffness
San Diego Padres outfielder Trent Grisham (back) was held out of Sunday night's lineup against the New York Mets due to lingering back stiffness after his collision with Mets right-hander Chris Bassitt on Saturday. Manager Bob Melvin said that Grisham was available off the bench on Sunday, but he didn't get into the game. Esteury Ruiz received the start in center field with Grisham on the bench in the series finale in New York. Grisham does have 10 home runs on the season, but he's hitting a very disappointing .190/.290/.337 with 34 RBI, 37 runs scored and four stolen bases in 352 plate appearances and 93 games to this point. Fantasy managers should consider him day-to-day for now.

Fri Jul 15 202200:06Trent Grisham Homers, Swipes A Bag
San Diego Padres outfielder Trent Grisham did a bit of everything Thursday, going 1-for-3 with a home run, a walk, two runs scored, and a stolen base in an 8-5 loss to the Colorado Rockies. Grisham now has nine homers and four steals on the season. It's been a disappointing season for the lefty swinger, with just a .629 OPS in 287 at-bats, but he's slashing an encouraging .225/.347/.450 in July, making him a potentially useful piece the rest of the way for fantasy managers.

Sun Jun 26 202213:14Trent Grisham Remains Out On Sunday
San Diego Padres outfielder Trent Grisham (shoulder) will miss his second straight game on Sunday as the team takes on right-hander Kyle Gibson and the Philadelphia Phillies. Grisham was a late scratch from Saturday's contest due to right shoulder soreness and the injury will continue to keep him out of action on Sunday. Jose Azocar will be in center field for the team once again in Sunday's contest. Grisham has had a rough time at the plate so far this year. Over 71 games, he's slashing .191/.289/.326 with six home runs, two stolen bases, 27 RBI and 29 runs.

Wed May 25 202214:52Trent Grisham Isn't Starting Wednesday
San Diego Padres outfielder Trent Grisham isn't in Wednesday's lineup for a matchup with the Milwaukee Brewers and right-handed starter Aaron Ashby. The 25-year-old is hitting .155 with a .255 on-base percentage and a home run in 160 plate appearances this season. Jose Azocar is starting in center field instead and batting ninth. Azocar is batting .250 with a .320 on-base percentage and a pair of stolen bases in 50 plate appearances this season. Fantasy managers in need of streaming options in the outfield are probably better off looking elsewhere.

Wed May 11 202215:02Trent Grisham In Wednesday's Starting Lineup
San Diego Padres outfielder Trent Grisham is back in the starting lineup on Wednesday for a matchup with the Chicago Cubs and right-hander Keegan Thompson. The outfielder wasn't in the lineup for Tuesday's matchup between the two teams but will hit eighth on Wednesday and start in center field. In 119 plate appearances this season, Grisham is batting .149 with a .265 on-base percentage and a home run. He has yet to face Thompson at the Major League level.

Mon Apr 18 202218:31Trent Grisham Sitting Against Reds On Monday
San Diego Padres outfielder Trent Grisham will be out of the starting lineup for the first time this season on Monday as the team lines up to face the Cincinnati Reds. Jose Azocar is getting the start in center field and batting ninth in the game. Meanwhile, Austin Nola is slotting in at designated hitter and leading off for the game. Grisham hasn't been providing much of a spark as the team's primary leadoff hitter so far this year. He's drawn seven walks over 11 games, but he's slashed just .146/.271/.244 and he's only scored two runs.

Tue Apr 5 202221:18Trent Grisham Slashes .229/.308/.343 In Spring
San Diego Padres outfielder Trent Grisham had a bit of an underwhelming showing at the plate during Spring Training this year. The 25-year-old put together a .229/.308/.343 slash line with just two extra-base hits (a home run and a double) over 13 games. Grisham took a big step back last year. He flashed a lot of potential in his first year with the Padres in 2020, when he posted an .808 OPS and compiled 10 home runs and 10 stolen bases in just 59 games. Last year, however, he had a .740 OPS, 15 home runs and 13 stolen bases over 132 games. He's likely to at least start the season as the Padres' leadoff hitter, which makes him alluring for fantasy purposes in and of itself. He's ranked No. 146 overall in the RotoBaller rankings.

Wed Oct 6 202119:02Trent Grisham Fails To Build On Breakout 2020 Season
San Diego Padres outfielder Trent Grisham finished the season with a .242/.327/.413 slash, 15 homers, 13 steals and 123 runs-plus-RBI in 527 plate appearances. After breaking out in a shortened 2020 campaign, Grisham battled leg injuries early in the season, ultimately disappointing as a player expected to provide OF2/3 value. Despite superb plate discipline, the 23-year-old failed to parlay his eye into hard contact, recording an unflattering .305 xwOBA. Grisham will enter 2022 as the Friars incumbent everyday center fielder but his fantasy stock can likely be had at a discount. Assuming a bounceback, Grisham could contribute another double-digit power and speed season at a reasonable draft cost.

Thu Sep 16 202108:41Trent Grisham Slashing .140/.156/.233 In September
San Diego Padres outfielder Trent Grisham has had a rough time at the plate so far in September. Over 11 games this month, he's slashing just .140/.156/.233 with 15 strikeouts over 43 at-bats. The 24-year-old began the year as a mainstay at the top of the Padres lineup, but he's been getting some starts in the bottom third of the lineup over the past few months. In Wednesday's game, he batted eighth and went 0-for-4, though he had an RBI and he scored a run. Over 115 games on the year, Grisham is slashing .238/.324/.407 with 14 home runs, 10 stolen bases, 55 RBI and 53 runs. He should be held onto in all deep leagues and NL-only leagues, but in shallow leagues, he can be dropped for a hot bat on the waiver wire.
