The San Diego Padres have signed left-hander Austin Davis to a minor-league deal. Fri Jul 30 202119:35AL East-leading Red Sox acquire Robles and Davis in trades
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) — The AL East-leading Boston Red Sox acquired right-hander Hansel Robles from Minnesota and left-hander Austin Davis from Pittsburgh in a pair of trades Friday. Boston sent infielder-outfielder Michael Chavis to the Pirates and minor league right-hander Alex Scherff to the Twins. Robles made 45 appearances for the Twins this season, going 3-4 with 10 saves and a 4.91 ERA. He has appeared in 358 major league games overall. Davis has made 65 relief appearances with the Philadelphia Phillies (2018-20) and Pirates (2020-21), posting a 5.65 ERA. The left-hander has appeared in 10 games with Pittsburgh and 13 in the minors this year. “Everybody has seen our bullpen has done a great job this year, and we wanted to back that up by getting them reinforcements to make sure we have as many good options as possible down the stretch," Boston chief baseball officer Chaim Bloom said. Boston began the day with the third-best AL bullpen ERA at 3.62. Chavis hit .190 with two home... [More]
Fri Jul 30 202118:39Michael Chavis Traded To Pirates For Austin Davis
The Boston Red Sox on Friday traded infielder Michael Chavis to the Pittsburgh Pirates in exchange for relief pitcher Austin Davis. Chavis is having the weakest season of his major league career, hitting .190/.207/.342 with two home runs and six RBI on 15 hits through 79 at-bats. Davis, 28, was one of a few relievers the Red Sox added to their bullpen on Friday to give their tired pitching staff a bit of a reprieve. However, his 5.59 ERA through 9 2/3 innings pitched this season should be a red flag for fantasy managers.

No need to call them cheat sheets.Major League Baseball has told teams that it's perfectly OK for pitchers to carry the kind of scouting cards that umpire Joe West confiscated from Philadelphia reliever Austin Davis on the mound this weekend.Phillies manager Gabe Kapler said he'd been informed the cards were legal. They are, provided they don't delay games, MLB advised clubs in clarifying the policy."I think it's great that our pitchers are able to have their game plans on them," Kapler said Sunday's 8-1 loss to the Chicago Cubs. "I think it takes a lot of mental focus, takes a lot of bandwidth to get out the best hitters in baseball. And when you can just take a little of that off your mind and put it on a card, I think that's helpful for pitchers and good for baseball."It has become common in the age of advanced baseball analytics to see outfielders and infielders pulling info cards from their pockets to check on proper positioning. Sun Sep 2 201813:28Kapler says pitchers allowed to use cheat sheets
PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Phillies manager Gabe Kapler says he has been informed pitchers are allowed to use the type of cheat sheets that umpire Joe West confiscated from reliever Austin Davis on Saturday night.Kapler made his remarks before Sunday's series finale against the Chicago Cubs.Kapler and Davis said the left-hander was using the card merely for information on the Cubs hitters. But West said it was illegal under Rule 6.02(c)(7), which states that the pitcher shall not have on his person, or in his possession, any foreign substance.West, who is in his 41st season as an umpire, indicated Saturday night that he contacted the league office to see if the cards, which aren't specifically banned in the rule book, would be allowed.___More AP MLB: https://apnews.com/tag/MLB and https://twitter.com/AP_Sports
