Wed Feb 2815:05Sam Hilliard Claimed Off Waivers By Rockies From Orioles
The Colorado Rockies have claimed outfielder Sam Hilliard off waivers from the Baltimore Orioles. The O's had claimed him earlier in the offseason from the Atlanta Braves where he appeared in 40 games in the 2023 season, hitting .236 with three home runs and four stolen bases across just 78 trips to the plate. Now, the 30-year-old returns to the organization where he spent the first four seasons of his big-league career from 2019-2022. He appeared in 214 games with the Rockies, slugging a career-high 14 home runs in the 2021 season. His bat has largely been well below the league average in his career as he owns a .215 lifetime average with 32 homers, 19 steals, and a .718 OPS across 254 games, production that grades out 22% below the league average, as per his 78 wRC+.

Wed Nov 1 202316:20Orioles Claim Sam Hilliard Off Waivers From Braves
The Baltimore Orioles claimed outfielder Sam Hilliard (heel) off waivers from the Atlanta Braves on Wednesday and designated right-hander Joey Krehbiel for assignment in a corresponding move. Before missing the end of the regular season in 2023 due to a heel injury, Hilliard went 17-for-72 (.236) with three home runs, five doubles, six RBI, four stolen bases and 15 runs scored in 40 games in his fifth big-league season and first in Atlanta. The 29-year-old should be fully healed up in time for the start of spring training in 2024, where he will compete for a roster spot in Baltimore. In 254 career major-league games, Hilliard has a .215/.294/.424 slash line with 32 homers, 77 RBI and 19 stolen bases.

Thu Jul 20 202308:41Sam Hilliard Lands On The Injured List Tuesday
The Atlanta Braves placed outfielder Sam Hilliard (heel) on the 10-day injured list on Tuesday with a right heel contusion, which he suffered running the bases. There is no timetable for his return. Hilliard was putting up decent numbers with the bat before the injury, slashing .236/.295/.431 with three homers and four steals across 40 games. The injury opens up more playing time for Kevin Pillar, who owns a .245 batting average ad .749 OPS over 48 contests. In a corresponding move, the Braves recalled right-hander Seth Elledge from Triple-A Gwinnett.

Tue May 23 202314:38Sam Hilliard Back In The Starting Lineup Tuesday
Atlanta Braves outfielder Sam Hilliard is back in the starting lineup Tuesday against the Los Angeles Dodgers and right-hander Bobby Miller. It's his first game action since May 16 but Hilliard has been rather productive at the plate this season. The former Colorado Rockie is hitting .258 with three homers, four stolen bases, and a .789 OPS across 72 plate appearances on the season. His 41.7% K% is a concern but Hilliard's overall production has been 12% above the league average, as per his 112 wRC+. His career 33.6% K% is rather bloated but Hilliard has a solid track record of hitting for power given his .211 isolated power for his career. He'll hit ninth and man center field Tuesday night in Atlanta.

Mon Apr 17 202318:03Sam Hilliard Out Of Monday's Starting Lineup
Atlanta Braves outfielder Sam Hilliard is not in Monday's starting lineup versus the San Diego Padres. With Padres left-hander Ryan Weathers on the mound, the Braves are stacking right-handed bats which leaves the lefty-swinging Hilliard on the bench to start. Acquired in an off-season trade with the Rockies, Hilliard has been excellent for the Braves with a .308 average alongside a homer, two steals, and a .976 OPS across 32 trips to the plate. He does sport a sky-high 43.8% K% but has at least mitigated that figure with an excellent 18.8% BB%. Eli White will take over for Hilliard in center field and hit ninth Monday night in San Diego.

Thu Apr 13 202313:09Sam Hilliard Picks Up Second Stolen Base Wednesday
Atlanta Braves outfielder Sam Hilliard went 0-for-2 with a run scored, his second stolen base of the season, a walk and a strikeout in the team's 5-4 win over the Cincinnati Reds on Wednesday. Hilliard is seeing regular playing time in Atlanta's outfield with Michael Harris II (back) on the injured list, and he's impressed with a .333 batting average (7-for-21) with three doubles, an RBI, two steals and four runs scored, although he's also struck out 11 times in just 24 plate appearances. The 29-year-old will only be useful to those in deeper leagues for a little while longer with Harris expected to come off the injured list at some point next week.

Tue Apr 11 202314:38Sam Hilliard Re-Enters Starting Lineup On Tuesday
Atlanta Braves outfielder Sam Hilliard is back in the starting lineup on Tuesday after coming off the bench on Monday. With Michael Harris II on the 10-day injured list, Hilliard is getting an opportunity to put his decent power/speed combination to work against the visiting Cincinnati Reds and right-hander Luis Cessa. While the lefty-swinging Hilliard benefitted from the league's hitter-friendliest venue at Coors Field in Colorado in parts of four seasons to begin his career he also owns a strong .199 isolated power in parks not named Coors Field. He's also ranked in the 85th percentile or better in Statcast's spring speed metric in each of his four first MLB seasons including 93rd or better in each of his first three. He could be a sneaky DFS streaming option on Tuesday.

Mon Apr 10 202314:25Sam Hilliard Starting On The Bench
Atlanta Braves outfielder Sam Hilliard is not in the team's starting lineup for Monday's series opener against the Cincinnati Reds. Hilliard has become the team's starting center fielder with Michael Harris II (back) on the injured list, but he'll take a seat for some rest on Monday. The 29-year-old has gone 5-for-15 (.333) to begin the year with a double in five games played, and he should continue to see plenty of playing time in Atlanta's outfield until Harris is able to return. With Hilliard sitting out on Monday, Eli White will get the nod in center field and will hit ninth against Reds right-hander Graham Ashcraft. White has hit just .185 with nine home runs and 28 RBI in 131 career MLB games to this point.

Sun Nov 6 202222:38Braves Acquire Sam Hilliard From The Rockies
The Atlanta Braves acquired outfielder Sam Hilliard from the Colorado Rockies on Sunday in exchange for right-hander Dylan Spain. Hilliard played in 70 games for the Rockies this year in his fourth major-league season, but he did very little with the bat, slashing .184/.280/.264 with two home runs, 14 RBI, 26 runs scored and five stolen bases in 200 plate appearances. In a career-high 81 games for Colorado in 2021, Hilliard hit .215 with a career-high 14 long balls and 34 RBI. The 28-year-old spent the last month of the season in the minors and won't be a lock to make Atlanta's big-league roster out of spring training. Spain, 24, had a 5.30 ERA, 1.36 WHIP and a 60:13 K:BB in 56 innings over 36 outings (seven starts) for High-A Rome in 2022.

Thu Jun 2 202221:35Sam Hilliard Evaluated For A Concussion
Colorado Rockies outfielder Sam Hilliard was in concussion protocol after making a diving catch in the first game of Wednesday's doubleheader against the Miami Marlins. He missed Game 2 of Wednesday's doubleheader and was held out of Thursday's contest against the Atlanta Braves. The 28-year-old is day-to-day, and there's a possibility that he could land on the 7-day concussion injured list. Garrett Hampson has started the last games in centerfield while Hilliard is sidelined. Hampson should see an uptick in playing until Kris Bryant (back) or Hilliard returns to action and is mainly a speculative add in deep-league formats.

Sat Oct 2 202101:57Sam Hilliard Blasts A Three-Run Homer
Colorado Rockies outfielder Sam Hilliard went 1-for-3 with a three-run homer, one walk, and two strikeouts in a 9-7 win over the Diamondbacks on Friday. Hilliard capped off the Rockies six-run rally in the top of the sixth inning with a three-run blast off Humberto Castellanos. The big home run gives the 27-year-old outfielder 13 bombs to go along with 33 RBI, and four stolen bases over 207 at-bats on the year. Those counting stats aren't bad but his .213/.291/.454 batting line leaves a lot to be desired.

Thu Sep 23 202113:27Sam Hilliard Goes Deep In Win Over The Dodgers
Colorado Rockies outfielder Sam Hilliard went 1-for-4 with a three-run homer and two strikeouts in a 10-5 win over the Dodgers on Wednesday. Hilliard only came up with one hit in Wednesday's victory but it was a big one. He put the nail in the Dodgers' proverbial coffin in the bottom of the seventh inning when he swatted a three-run homer off Alex Vesia to give Colorado a commanding five-run lead. The 27-year-old outfielder has played better lately, slashing .294/.368/.647 over his last seven contests. But he's failed to perform with any level of consistency throughout the season. He's got a .202/.279/.455 batting line with 12 home runs, 27 RBI, and three stolen bases over 178 at-bats on the year.

Sat Sep 18 202112:15Sam Hilliard Goes Yard In Friday's Win
Colorado Rockies outfielder Sam Hilliard went 2-for-4 with a two-run home run, two runs scored, and a strikeout in a 9-8 win over the Nationals. Hilliard came up with a big hit in the sixth inning, blasting a two-run homer off Alberto Baldonado to give the Rockies a one-run lead. The 27-year-old outfielder has homered twice in the last seven games and is slashing .333/.400/.722 over that span. Overall, he's got an ugly .202 batting average and .732 OPS to go along with 11 home runs, 24 RBI, and three stolen bases over 168 at-bats. He should continue to see regular at-bats down the stretch but he's not a reliable fantasy option.

Thu Sep 16 202112:13Sam Hilliard Singles And Scores On Wednesday
Colorado Rockies outfielder Sam Hilliard went 1-for-3 with a single, a run scored, and a strikeout in a 3-2 win over the Atlanta Braves on Wednesday. The Rockies couldn't get a whole lot going on offense against Huascar Ynoa and company but they were able to score enough to win the game. Hilliard and Colton Welker scored all Colorado's runs and collected two of the team's five hits. Hilliard has been up and down all season, which makes his overall numbers hard to look at. He's posted a .195/.275/.433 batting line with 10 home runs, 22 RBI, and two stolen bases over 164 at-bats on the year.

Sat Sep 11 202122:08Sam Hilliard's Injury Not Serious
Colorado Rockies outfielder Sam Hilliard (elbow) got hit by a pitch in his elbow during Saturday's game against the Philadelphia Phillies. Hilliard left the game shortly after, but manager Bud Black said the injury isn't serious and it might heal by Sunday. Hilliard has the tools to be a multi-category contributor but has had a sluggish season at the dish, slashing .193/.270/.435 with 10 HRs and two stolen bases across 64 games. He's been getting everyday playing time as of late but doesn't hit enough to be relevant in most fantasy leagues.

Wed Sep 1 202100:41Sam Hilliard Blasts Ninth Homer Of The Year
Colorado Rockies outfielder Sam Hilliard went 1-for-3 with a solo home run and two strikeouts in a 4-3 loss to the Texas Rangers on Tuesday. Hilliard tied up the ball game in the top of the third inning when he swatted his ninth homer of the season off Jordan Lyles. It was his only hit of the contest and his first home run since August 8. Hilliard was looking good in early August but has slipped into ineptitude over the last 15 contests. He's slashing just .140/.245/.256 over that span and is now batting just .200/.277/.450 with nine home runs, 20 RBI, and two stolen bases over 140 at-bats on the season.

Fri Aug 6 202110:18Sam Hilliard Picks Up Seventh Home Run Of The Year
Colorado Rockies outfielder Sam Hilliard went 1-for-4 with a solo home run and a strikeout in a 6-5 win over the Chicago Cubs on Thursday. Hilliard took Jake Arrieta deep in the bottom of the fourth inning to pick up his seventh long ball of the season. He's now gone deep three times in the last seven games and five times in the last 15. Despite the recent power surge, he's still slashing a meager .190/.269/.488 across 84 at-bats this season. He's got as much upside as any young outfielder in the game but he needs to develop better plate discipline if he's going to take the next step. He's still a name to keep an eye on as he's getting regular at-bats for the rebuilding Rockies.

Wed Aug 4 202101:42Sam Hilliard Goes Yard, Drives In Four Runs
Colorado Rockies outfielder Sam Hilliard went 2-for-3 with a home run, a double, four RBI, two runs scored, a walk, and a strikeout in a 13-6 pounding of the Cubs. Hilliard broke the game open in the bottom of the fourth inning when he swatted his sixth homer of the year, a three-run blast, off Zach Davies to put Colorado up 7-1. He would add an RBI double in the bottom of the sixth as well. He's still slashing an underwhelming .195/.271/.481 with six home runs, 13 RBI, and one stolen base (77 at-bats) on the season but he's really picked it up over the last seven contests, homering three times. He's worth keeping an eye on down the stretch as he's getting semi-regular playing time in the Rockies outfield.

Sun Aug 1 202119:59Sam Hilliard Goes Yard In Defeat
Colorado Rockies outfielder Sam Hilliard went 2-for-4 with a solo home run and two strikeouts in an 8-1 loss to the San Diego Padres on Sunday. Hilliard was responsible for the only Colorado run as he swatted a solo home run off of reliever Reiss Knehr in the top of the second inning. He picked up a single later in the contest as well, he was the only player to record multiple hits for the Rockies. The 27-year-old is getting a chance to play almost every day and has knocked a pair of home runs over the last seven games. Overall, he's slashing .176/.247/.419 to go along with five home runs, nine RBI, and one stolen base over 74 at-bats. He's just a deep NL-only option now at this point.
