Thu Jan 26 202318:33Orioles Designate Darwinzon Hernandez For Assignment
The Baltimore Orioles designated left-hander Darwinzon Hernandez for assignment on Thursday to make room on the 40-man roster for left-hander Cole Irvin, who was acquired in a trade with the Oakland Athletics. Baltimore landed Hernandez in a trade with the Boston Red Sox earlier this offseason, but the 26-year-old southpaw could be on the move yet again. He only tossed 6 2/3 relief innings for Boston in 2022 and was beat up to the tune of 17 runs (16 earned) on 14 hits (four home runs allowed) while walking eight and striking out nine. The Venezuelan reliever has interesting stuff but has yet to put it all together at the big-league level in four years with the Red Sox. If Hernandez clears waivers, he could return to Baltimore.

Fri Jan 6 202318:34Darwinzon Hernandez Designated For Assignment
The Boston Red Sox designated left-hander Darwinzon Hernandez for assignment on Friday in order to make room on the 40-man roster for veteran third baseman Justin Turner. In his fourth big-league season in 2022, Hernandez disappointed and only pitched in 6 2/3 innings in the majors for Boston. He allowed 17 runs (16 earned) on 14 hits while walking eight and striking out nine. The 26-year-old southpaw was much better in 2021, when he had a 3.38 ERA (4.80 FIP), 1.50 WHIP and 29.7 percent strikeout rate, so perhaps he can bounce back in 2023 with a change of scenery. If Hernandez goes unclaimed on waivers, he'll be able to sign with any MLB team on the open market.

Boston Red Sox pitcher Darwinzon Hernandez (knee) underwent surgery on his torn meniscus on Thursday. He will be out for the remainder of the 2022 season as he begins a long rehabilitation process. The 25-year-old appeared in 48 games for the Red Sox last year and pitched to a 3.38 ERA and a 1.50 WHIP while averaging 12.2 K/9. He spent the entirety of his brief 2022 season at Triple-A, where he had a 5.95 ERA and a 1.32 WHIP over 19.2 innings.

Sun Apr 3 202210:26Darwinzon Hernandez To Start At Triple-A
Boston Red Sox manager Alex Cora said that left-hander Darwinzon Hernandez will start the season at Triple-A Worcester and will make the Opening Day start in Jacksonville. The 25-year-old was hoping to open the season in Boston's bullpen as a long man, but he'll instead stay stretched out in the minors and work on his control. The Venezuelan southpaw has shown plenty of strikeout intrigue with 124 K's in 78 2/3 innings over his first three MLB seasons, but he's also walked 65 batters and must refine his control before the Red Sox can trust him back in the majors. In 48 relief outings last year, Hernandez had a 3.38 ERA and 1.50 WHIP with a 29.7% strikeout rate and a way-too-high 17.0% walk rate.

Fri Oct 15 202120:15Darwinzon Hernandez On Boston's ALCS Roster
Boston Red Sox relief pitcher Darwinzon Hernandez is on the team's roster for the American League Championship Series. The left-hander pitched to a 3.38 ERA and a 4.79 FIP in 40 innings during the regular season. He struck out 54 batters while surrendering 31 walks. While he wasn't on Boston's roster for the Division Series against the Tampa Bay Rays, Hernandez gives the club another left-handed option out of the bullpen alongside Martin Perez and Josh Taylor.
