Fri Jan 20 202313:27Cubs Designate Anthony Kay For Assignment
The Chicago Cubs designated left-hander Anthony Kay for assignment on Friday to make room on the 40-man roster for the recently signed Trey Mancini. The Cubs claimed Kay off waivers from the Toronto Blue Jays in December, but he could be moving to another organization shortly. The 27-year-old southpaw tossed only two relief innings for the Blue Jays in 2022 due to injuries and allowed one earned run while striking out three. In his four seasons in the big leagues with Toronto, he's posted a 5.48 ERA (4.67 FIP), 1.63 WHIP, 38 walks and 77 strikeouts in 70 2/3 innings pitched over 28 outings (seven starts). If he clears waivers this time around, Kay could remain in Chicago's organization.

Fri Jun 25 202102:09Cubs combine on record-tying 7th no-hitter of MLB season
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Zach Davies and three Chicago Cubs relievers combined for the seventh no-hitter in the majors this year, blanking the Los Angeles Dodgers 4-0 Thursday night and tying the record for most in a single baseball season since 1900. The Dodgers drew eight walks, getting at least one from each Cubs pitcher, but managed no other baserunners. Davies (5-4) issued five walks and used 94 pitches to get through six innings against the defending World Series champions in the 16th start of his first season with the Cubs. Ryan Tepera and Andrew Chafin each went one inning. Craig Kimbrel then walked Chris Taylor leading off the ninth, but the closer struck out Cody Bellinger, Albert Pujols and pinch-hitter Will Smith to finish the 17th no-hitter in Cubs history — the team’s first combined effort. Javier Báez homered in the first inning and Willson Contreras added a two-run shot in the sixth for the Cubs, who happily celebrated the franchise’s first no-hitter since last Sept. 13, when... Sat May 22 202118:32Blue Jays' Biggio on IL with cervical spine ligament sprain
DUNEDIN, Fla. (AP) — The Toronto Blue Jays put third baseman Cavan Biggio on the 10-day injured list with a cervical spine ligament sprain on Saturday. Toronto manager Charlie Montoyo expects Biggio to be ready to return when eligible to come of the IL. “It's real nagging," Montoyo said. ”He gets loose and then he's fine but then the more he plays it gets too uncomfortable. The best thing for him is just take the 10 days so we can get rid of that pain and be ready to come back after 10 days. Biggio was out of the starting lineup Friday night with neck soreness but did pinch bhit. Montoyo said center fielder George Springer, out with a right quadriceps strain, is running sprints at around 50-60%. Springer needs to run the bases and go out on a minor league rehab assignment before rejoining the team. Reliever Anthony Castro (right forearm strain) and infielder Joe Panik (strained left calf) were both reinstated from the 10-day IL, and right-hander Ty Tice was recalled from Triple-A Buffalo. Left-hander Anthony Kay and right-hander Jeremy Beasley were optioned to Buffalo. ___ More AP MLB: https://apnews.com/hub/MLB and https://twitter.com/AP_Sports

Tue May 11 202117:46Right-hander Nate Pearson sent to minors by Blue Jays
ATLANTA (AP) — The Toronto Blue Jays optioned top prospect Nate Pearson to Triple-A Buffalo on Tuesday and recalled right-hander Jeremy Beasley. Pearson struggled in his first start this season, allowing three runs, four and five walks over 2 1/3 innings Sunday in a 7-4 loss at Houston. The 24-year-old right-hander debuted last July and started this season on the injured list with a right adductor strain. “The main reason we sent him down is because we want him to get more consistency coming off his injury,” Blue Jays manager Charlie Montoyo said before Tuesday's game at Atlanta. “He made some strides in his first Triple-A outing but he’s still got some work to do.” Montoyo said left-hander Anthony Kay will fill the spot in Toronto’s starting rotation. Kay is 0-2 with a 10.24 ERA in three games. He was 2-0 with a 5.14 ERA over 13 appearances last year. Beasley was acquired from Arizona last month for cash. ___ More AP MLB: https://apnews.com/MLB and https://twitter.com/AP_Sports

WASHINGTON (AP) — Huascar Ynoa (3-1) hit a grand slam and allowed an unearned run and four hits in seven innings, leading the Atlanta Braves to a 6-1 victory over the Washington Nationals on Tuesday night. Ynoa drove a fastball from Tanner Rainey 427 feet to center field in the sixth inning for the first grand slam by a major league pitcher since Cincinnati’s Anthony DeSclafani on June 23, 2018. Fri Apr 16 202102:28Ramrez helps Indians bounce back, beat White Sox 4-2
CHICAGO (AP) — Slumping slugger José Ramírez connected for a go-ahead, two-run homer off Lance Lynn in the sixth inning and the Cleveland Indians bounced back from being no-hit, beating the Chicago White Sox 4-2 on Thursday. After Carlos Rodón just missed a perfect game Wednesday night, there was a different kind of tension this time as the benches emptied in the bottom of the first. Adam Eaton singled and tried to advance when Indians right fielder Josh Naylor threw to third, hoping to get the lead runner. Eaton arrived ahead of the throw back to second, but was called out when his hand came off the bag while shortstop Andrés Giménez stood his ground and held the tag. Eaton grabbed Giménez’s leg, began barking and then pushed Giménez in the chest with two hands. Indians starter Aaron Civale plunked Eaton with a pitch in the upper arm in the third. Civale (3-0) allowed only a run — in the first — and five hits through six innings in his third straight strong start. Nick Wittgren and James... [More]

NEW YORK (AP) — Infielder Joe Panik was put on the Toronto Blue Jays' major league roster and George Springer went on the 10-day injured list, among a dozen roster moves ahead of Thursday’s opener at the New York Yankees. The 30-year-old Panik, a seven-year major league veteran, had agreed to a minor league contract ahead of spring training and was selected from Triple-A Buffalo. He gets a one-year contract paying $1.85 million while in the major leagues and $150,000 while in the minors. He also can earn $400,000 in performance bonuses for plate appearances: $100,000 each for 325, 400, 475 and 500. Springer was placed on the 10-day injured list with a strained left oblique muscle that will delay his debut with the Blue Jays, who signed him as a free agent to a $150 million, six-year contract. The 2017 World Series MVP with Houston was scratched from a game on March 9 because of tightness in his abdominal muscles and did not play in any exhibitions after March 21. Jay Bruce returned to the major leagues Saturday, making the New York Yankees' roster at the deadline for decisions on free agents who had gone to spring training with minor league contracts. Atlanta added third baseman Pablo Sandoval, infielder Ehire Adrianza and reliever Nate Jones to its major league roster. The Chicago Cubs told infielder Eric Sogard he will be added. Detroit, having already told pitcher Julio Teheran he will be on the roster, informed pitcher Derek Holland he will be added and decided to pay a $100,000 retention bonus to keep pitcher Erasmo Ramirez. Under baseball's collective bargaining agreement, players who became free agents after the World Series and then went to spring training with minor league contracts had to be told by noon EDT Saturday that they would be added to the 40-man roster, paid the retention bonus or released. Released players can re-sign with the same team. Miami paid the retention bonus to catcher Sandy Leon, the only other player given the bonus.... [More]
