Tue Mar 1900:08Zac Gallen Gets Opening Day Nod
The Arizona Diamondbacks announced Monday that starting pitcher Zac Gallen will be the team's Opening Day starter. This will be the second consecutive season that the 28-year-old has earned the honor. Gallen will get a favorable matchup against the Rockies at home. He put forth another strong season in 2023, going 17-9 with a 3.47 ERA, 1.12 WHIP, and 26.0% strikeout rate in 34 starts and 210 innings pitched. He finished third in the voting for the National League Cy Young Award and will be looking to build off that, making him a high-end fantasy option in all formats.

Wed Feb 2112:31Zac Gallen, Merrill Kelly To Make Spring Debuts Soon
Arizona Diamondbacks right-hander Zac Gallen is scheduled to make his first spring Cactus League start on March 1 against the Cincinnati Reds, while right-hander Merrill Kelly will make his first start on March 8 against the Chicago Cubs. Including the playoffs, Gallen and Kelly threw 243 2/3 and 201 2/3 innings, respectively, in 2023. Kelly took some time off in the offseason before getting back to his training regiment that included range-of-motion exercises, according to manager Torey Lovullo. Because of the big workloads in their run to the World Series last year, the D-backs will make sure to take it easy on both pitchers this spring. Gallen is a low-end No. 1 fantasy starter, while Kelly profiles as more of a No. 4 to round out your fantasy rotation.

Thu Jan 1122:40Zac Gallen Avoids Arbitration With Diamondbacks
Right-hander Zac Gallen and the Arizona Diamondbacks settled at $10.011 million for the 2024 season to avoid salary arbitration on Thursday, according to a source. Gallen will be in his final year of arbitration eligibility going into next season. The 28-year-old made his first All-Star team in 2023 and went 17-9 with a 3.47 ERA (3.26 FIP) and 1.12 WHIP while walking 47 and striking out a career-high 220 batters in 34 starts covering a career-high 210 innings pitched to eventual lead his team to the World Series. He will remain a front-line rotation option for the Snakes going into his fifth full season with the team. Gallen could carry more injury risk because of his huge jump in workload of the last two seasons, but everything else in his profile is rock-solid, most impressive of which is his pinpoint control.

Thu Oct 26 202317:47Zac Gallen To Start Game 1 Of World Series
Arizona Diamondbacks starting pitcher Zac Gallen will start Game 1 of the 2023 World Series against the Texas Rangers on Friday. Not much surprise in the starting pitchers named by manager Torey Lovullo. Merrill Kelly will start Game 2 with Brandon Pfaadt taking the bump for Game 3. Game 4 sounds like a toss-up for now. Gallen has been one of the best pitchers in baseball over the last two seasons. He finished fifth in the Cy Young voting last season and was an All-Star this year. The 28-year-old hasn't been as good in the postseason this year, however. He currently posts a 5.24 ERA and a 6.93 FIP. While facing 96 batters this October, Gallen has 13 strikeouts and has given up six home runs.

Mon Oct 23 202323:32Zac Gallen Expects To Be Available For Game 7 In Relief
Arizona Diamondbacks right-hander Zac Gallen said he expects to be available for Game 7 of the National League Championship Series against the Philadelphia Phillies on Tuesday night in relief. "Game 7, it's all hands on deck," manager Torey Lovullo said. Gallen last pitched on Saturday in Game 5 of the series, when he allowed four runs on six hits while striking out just one over six innings in a loss. The 28-year-old threw 93 pitches in that outing and probably would only be able to give the D-backs an inning or two, at the most, if he appears in the winner-take-all showdown in Philadelphia. Gallen hasn't been nearly as sharp in his first postseason experience this October as he was in the regular season, as he's allowed 13 earned runs on 24 hits (six homers) while walking nine and striking out 13 in 22 1/3 innings over four starts.

Fri Oct 13 202319:22Zac Gallen Named Game 1 Starter
Arizona Diamondbacks starting pitcher Zac Gallen has been named the Game 1 starter for the upcoming NLCS, according to manager Torey Lovullo. This doesn't come as a surprise considering how well Gallen has pitched for the D-Backs this season. The expectation is that right-hander Merrill Kelly will get the ball following Gallen in Game 2. The D-Backs were able to make easy work of the Los Angeles Dodgers, but it won't get any easier versus the Philadelphia Phillies in their next series.

Mon Oct 9 202302:56Zac Gallen Taking The Hill For D-Backs In Game 2
Arizona Diamondbacks starting pitcher Zac Gallen will be on the bump for Game 2 of the Division Series against the Los Angeles Dodgers on Monday. Gallen will go toe-to-toe with rookie Bobby Miller with the D-backs looking to take a stranglehold in the series. The righty was good enough in the Wild Card round, tossing six innings of two-run ball against the Brewers to send them packing. With the Dodgers getting walloped in Game 1 and seeking revenge, Gallen will need to be at his best to thwart their offense.

Tue Oct 3 202300:10Zac Gallen To Start Game 2 Against Brewers
Arizona Diamondbacks starting pitcher Zac Gallen is slated to start Game 2 of the wild-card series on Wednesday on the road against the Brewers. His opposing starter has not yet been named. The 28-year-old had a solid season overall, going 17-9 with a 3.47 ERA, 1.12 WHIP, and 26.0% strikeout rate in 34 starts over 210 innings pitched. However, his second half was not as strong with a 4.03 ERA, 1.21 WHIP, and 25.4% ERA in 15 starts. Both of Gallen's starts against the Brewers in the regular season came in the first half, in which he allowed a single run over 14 IP with 15 strikeouts and two walks.

Fri Sep 8 202308:49Zac Gallen Trying To Get Back On Track Friday
Arizona Diamondbacks starting pitcher Zac Gallen is toeing the rubber for Friday's start against Jameson Taillon and the Chicago Cubs. The 28-year-old has not fared well recently, giving up 11 earned runs over his last 10 2/3 innings of work. Gallen still has excellent numbers, as he's posted a 3.48 ERA, 1.11 WHIP, and 25.9% strikeout rate with 14 victories across 29 starts. Fantasy managers should still view the fifth-year hurler as a must-start arm who can provide solid contributions in all categories.

Thu Aug 17 202314:49Zac Gallen Looks To Dominate The Padres Again Thursday
Arizona Diamondbacks pitcher Zac Gallen will look to dominate the Padres for the second consecutive start Thursday night in San Diego. The right-hander tossed six scoreless innings while allowing just four hits and a walk against eight strikeouts in a winning effort against the Padres his last time out. In fact, he has now tossed 13 innings of shutout ball with just six hits and one walk allowed against 19 strikeouts in his last two outings against the rival Padres. For the season, the 28-year-old owns a 3.24 ERA and a career-best 21.5% K-BB% across 25 starts, going 12-5 in the process. He will take on a Padres offense that has underperformed this season, sitting 19th with a .314 wOBA off of right-handed pitching.

Thu Jul 20 202317:52Zac Gallen Picks Up A Quality Start Against Atlanta
Arizona Diamondbacks starting pitcher Zac Gallen took a no-decision on Thursday when he allowed three runs on five hits with five strikeouts over seven innings in a 7-5 loss to the Atlanta Braves. Gallen actually had a perfect game going through five innings but eventually, the star-studded Atlanta offense had a breakthrough. Orlando Arcia got it going in the bottom of the sixth inning with a solo home run then slugger Matt Olson tacked on a two-run shot of his own in the bottom of the seventh. It's never easy facing the Braves and even after giving up the two home runs, Gallen was still in line for the win before the D-Backs bullpen blew it in the eighth inning. That said, Gallen still has picked up a quality start in 2-of-3 turns. He'll carry a 3.18 ERA, 1.06 WHIP, and 135:26 K/BB ratio over 130 1/3 innings (20 starts) on the year. He'll face the St. Louis Cardinals at home on Tuesday in his next start.

Mon Jul 10 202314:36Zac Gallen To Start For NL In All-Star Game
Arizona Diamondbacks right-hander Zac Gallen will get the starting nod for the National League in Tuesday's All-Star game in Seattle, and he'll be opposed by New York Yankees ace Gerrit Cole for the American League. Gallen is unlikely to go for more than a few innings in the Midsummer Classic after picking up his 11th win over the season in a seven-inning, one-run outing last Friday against the Pittsburgh Pirates. This will be the 27-year-old's first start in an All-Star game, and he's gone 11-3 with a solid 3.04 ERA (league-leading 2.77 FIP), league-leading 1.05 WHIP, 23 walks and 125 strikeouts in 118 1/3 innings over his 19 starts. Gallen's start last Friday was a nice bounce-back outing after giving up eight total earned runs in his previous two starts combined.

Sat Jul 8 202314:32Zac Gallen Adds To Home Dominance In Win
Arizona Diamondbacks starting pitcher Zac Gallen fired seven innings of one-run ball in Friday's 7-3 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates. The 27-year-old struck out five hitters and allowed four hits en route to his 11th win of the season. The only significant damage to Gallen's ledger was a Jared Triolo double which was ultimately driven in by a Tucupita Marcano single during the fifth frame. The right-hander was outstanding at Chase Field once again, now boasting a 1.48 ERA over 67 innings covering 10 home starts this year. Gallen has also withstood seven frames in four of his last five appearances. The 2023 All-Star caps off his first half with a marvelous 3.04 ERA, 1.05 WHIP, and 125:23 K:BB across an MLB-high 118 1/3 innings this campaign. Gallen should take the hill at some time next weekend for a tough draw against the Toronto Blue Jays.

Wed Jun 28 202302:38Zac Gallen Picks Up The Win On Tuesday
Arizona Diamondbacks starting pitcher Zac Gallen earned the win on Tuesday after allowing four runs on five hits with four strikeouts and two walks over six innings in an 8-4 victory over the Tampa Bay Rays. The D-Backs' offense staked Gallen a five-run lead in the bottom of the first inning so he had some breathing room in this one. He then allowed the first three batters to reach in the top of the second inning before recording an out. Randy Arozarena and Isaac Paredes then both scored on wild pitches before a Christian Bethancourt RBI groundout and a Jose Siri solo shot made it a 5-4 ball game. Gallen would settle down after that rough inning and wouldn't allow another run to score. He was able to secure his 10th win of the season thanks to the run support the offense provided. The 27-year-old owns a rock-solid 3.02 ERA, 1.09 WHIP, and 108:22 K/BB ratio over 104 1/3 innings (17 starts) on the year. He'll take on the Angels on the road in his next start.

Sat Jun 17 202309:58Zac Gallen Extends Home Supremacy In Eighth Victory
Arizona Diamondback starting pitcher Zac Gallen launched seven one-run innings versus the Cleveland Guardians on Friday. The 27-year-old allowed six hits and no walks while striking out seven batters on the way to his eighth win of the year in the team's 5-1 triumph. Gallen has been utterly dominant at Chase Field, holding opponents to one run or less in six of his eight starts for a golden 1.00 ERA there this season. The right-hander bears a contrasting 5.79 ERA on the road, however, making him something of a volatile fantasy option depending on venue. Gallen nonetheless carries a 2.96 ERA and exceptional 100:19 K:BB overall into a visit on Wednesday with the Milwaukee Brewers, who he has a 1.50 ERA over 24 frames against since 2021.

Sat May 20 202309:48Zac Gallen Labors, Can’t Escape Fourth Inning
Arizona Diamondbacks starting pitcher Zac Gallen may have had his worst start of the year in Friday's debacle against the Pittsburgh Pirates. He matched his season-worst with five earned runs allowed, permitted a season-high four walks, and fanned a season-low two batters in the loss. It ends an eight-game undefeated streak for the 27-year-old hurler, who was electric in his last seven starts in assembling a pristine 1.16 ERA with 60 punchouts. DFS players who paid the premium price for Gallen are likely none too pleased with Friday's fiasco. Things won't get much easier for the workhorse righty in season-long leagues when Gallen battles the Philadelphia Phillies at Citizens Bank Park on Wednesday.
