Fri Mar 1514:42Griffin Canning Likely To Start Opening Day
Los Angeles Angels right-hander Griffin Canning is likely to start on Opening Day for the club on March 28. If the Angels don't juggle their current schedule when it comes to their pitchers, Canning is indeed lined up to start the opener. After missing the entire 2022 season due to stress fractures in his back, Canning returned in 2023 to work to a 4.32 ERA across 24 appearances (22 starts) while posting a quality 19.2% K-BB% in his career-high 127 innings of work. It was certainly an encouraging return from injury for Canning as he should see an increase in workload this time around. ATC projects a 4.16 ERA and a 17.9% K-BB% across 25 starts for the 27-year-old in 2024, numbers that would serve fantasy managers well as a mid-round pick.

Wed Mar 1314:26Griffin Canning To Throw In Minor-League Game Wednesday
Los Angeles Angels right-hander Griffin Canning is scheduled to pitch in a minor-league game on Wednesday as he looks to continue what has been a strong spring to this point. Through three outings, the 27-year-old sports a 1.17 ERA and has eight strikeouts against four walks across 7 2/3 innings of work. All four of his free passes came in his most recent outing while he also struck out four in a March 7 outing against the Seattle Mariners. Canning worked to a 4.32 ERA across 24 outings (22 starts) in the 2023 campaign after missing all of the 2022 season due to a stress fracture in his lower back. He also posted a stellar 19.2% K-BB% a season ago, making him an intriguing fantasy option ahead of the 2024 season.

Thu Mar 714:56Griffin Canning Clean Through Two Spring Starts
Los Angeles Angels right-hander Griffin Canning has been excellent through his first two starts of Cactus League action. The 27-year-old has yet to allow an earned run through five innings of work with four strikeouts and zero walks in that time. He has allowed seven hits and a .350 average but six of those seven knocks have gone for singles and he has not yielded a home run. It's a nice start for Canning who enjoyed a solid season in 2023 with a 4.32 ERA and a healthy 19.2% K-BB% across 24 outings (22 starts) and a career-high 127 innings of work. Injuries had previously limited Canning's big-league exposure but he was able to post a career-best 25.9% and 6.7% BB% a season ago. He is an intriguing fantasy option heading toward 2024 with ATC projecting 25 starts of 4.16 ERA ball along with another stellar 17.9% K-BB%. He is worth the investment at his 284.2 ADP, if not sooner.

Sun Aug 13 202312:32Angels Reinstate Griffin Canning From Injured List
The Los Angeles Angels reinstated right-hander Griffin Canning (calf) from the injured list on Sunday and optioned left-hander Kenny Rosenberg to Triple-A Salt Lake following Saturday's game in a corresponding move. Canning's calf injury wasn't all that serious, as he was placed on the injured list back on Aug. 1. The 27-year-old right-hander is a candidate to be used in relief in Sunday's contest against the Houston Astros on the road. It's unclear when he'll return to the Halos' starting rotation. Canning has been decent so far in 2023, going 6-4 with a 4.46 ERA (4.60 FIP), 1.24 WHIP, 25 walks and 91 strikeouts in 84 2/3 innings of work in his 16 starts. His 9.7 K/9 mark is the highest of his four-year career.

Tue Aug 1 202319:35Griffin Canning Goes On 15-Day Injured List
The Los Angeles Angels placed right-hander Griffin Canning (calf) on the 15-day injured list (retroactive to July 29) on Tuesday with right-calf tightness and recalled right-hander Victor Mederos from Double-A Rocket City in a corresponding move. Canning was scratched from his start on Monday against the Atlanta Braves with general soreness, but now he'll miss at least the next two weeks with a calf injury. The 27-year-old's injury isn't very serious, though, so he should be ready to rejoin the team's starting rotation when he's eligible in the middle of August. Canning has been much better on the mound for fantasy managers in the last two months, and he's gone 6-4 with a 4.46 ERA, 1.24 WHIP and 91 strikeouts in total over 16 starts (84 2/3 innings) in 2023.

Mon Jul 31 202317:05Griffin Canning Scratched With General Soreness
Los Angeles Angels right-hander Griffin Canning has been scratched from his scheduled start on Monday against the Atlanta Braves with "general soreness" that lingered a bit longer than normal after his last start. Canning isn't overly concerned, though, and he's hoping to rejoin the starting rotation in a few days. With Canning out on Monday, right-hander Chase Silseth will get the spot start in an incredibly difficult matchup against the first-place Braves. In 10 appearances (two starts) for the Halos in 2023, the 23-year-old has a 4.44 ERA, 1.48 WHIP and 25 strikeouts in 24 1/3 innings pitched. Avoid him as a fantasy streamer. Canning has been solid in his last two starts, allowing four earned runs on 13 hits while walking only three and striking out 20 in 10 2/3 frames.

Tue May 30 202300:12Griffin Canning Fans Nine, Earns Win Monday
Los Angeles Angels starting pitcher Griffin Canning improved to 4-2 in Monday's 6-4 win over the White Sox. Canning pitched six innings, allowing three runs on six hits (including two home runs) and no walks with nine strikeouts. The 27-year-old has had some solid starts this season but has been inconsistent and now owns a 4.89 ERA in eight starts. He has been a useful streamer at times this season, but his next start will be a tough one at the Astros. Fantasy managers may not want to start him in that matchup.

Wed Apr 12 202308:40Angels Activating Griffin Canning On Wednesday
The Los Angeles Angels will activate right-hander Griffin Canning (groin) from the injured list on Wednesday, and the team is demoting Andrew Wantz in a corresponding move. The 26-year-old was in a rotation battle during Spring Training but was ultimately placed on the injured list after experiencing groin discomfort. Canning's expected to start Wednesday's matchup against the Washington Nationals. Fantasy managers shouldn't get too excited, as Canning last pitched in the majors during the 2021 season, posting a 5.60 ERA, 22.4% strikeout rate, and 1.48 WHIP across 62.2 innings. However, Canning has some potential, as he showed in his first two campaigns in the big leagues with a 4.36 ERA and 24.4% strikeout rate. Managers should wait and see which version of Canning shows up.

Wed Apr 5 202300:38Griffin Canning To Make Rehab Start Thursday
Los Angeles Angels starting pitcher Griffin Canning (groin) is scheduled to start for Single-A Inland Empire on Thursday in a rehab assignment. The 26-year-old competed for the sixth spot in the team's rotation this spring but felt some discomfort after his final appearance, leading to a stint on the injured list. If Canning's Thursday outing goes well, manager Phil Nevin said he is a candidate to start for the Angels on April 12. Canning showed some promise in 2020 but owns a lackluster 4.73 ERA, 1.34 WHIP, and 23.8% strikeout rate in 209 1/3 career innings pitched, so his fantasy upside is limited.

Wed Mar 29 202318:22Jake Lamb Makes Team, Griffin Canning Placed On IL
The Los Angeles Angels selected the contract of corner infielder Jake Lamb on Wednesday, so he will be on the Opening Day roster. In other moves, the Angels placed right-handers Griffin Canning (groin) and Chris Rodriguez (shoulder) on the 15-day injured list, retroactive to March 27. Lamb dealt with a minor left gluteus injury at the end of spring training, but he's fine now and will give the Angels an experienced left-handed bat off the bench early in 2023. The 32-year-old can fill in at both third and first base. The 26-year-old Canning is expected to miss at least the first couple weeks of the season. With him out, Tucker Davidson is expected to operate as the team's sixth starter, but he won't be needed until mid-April.

Tue Feb 14 202316:11Griffin Canning A Full-Go In Spring Training
Los Angeles Angels right-hander Griffin Canning (back) is pretty much a full-go at spring training after having mostly a normal offseason. He has already thrown a bunch of bullpen sessions and said he took up pilates and will do less lifting this year in order to keep his back healthy all season. Canning didn't pitch at all in 2022 because of a stress fracture in his lower back, but he's entering this spring fully healthy. The 26-year-old should have a place in the Angels' six-man starting rotation to open the year as long as he doesn't have any setbacks in camp. He wasn't very good in 2021 (5.60 ERA, 1.48 WHIP) in 62 2/3 innings, so fantasy managers in mixed leagues will need to see more from him before giving him another shot.

Mon May 16 202211:45Griffin Canning Has A Setback
Los Angeles Angels right-hander Griffin Canning (back), who is currently on the 60-day injured list due to a lower back stress fracture, felt some soreness after a two-inning simulated game on May 9, so he will pause his throwing program for a few days. Canning was set to head to Arizona as part of his rehab, but he will instead remain at Angel Stadium to work with team trainers. He's eligible to be activated on June 6, but he might not be ready for that date now after his setback. The 26-year-old has yet to pitch this season for the Halos after going 5-4 with a career-high 5.60 WHIP and 1.48 WHIP while walking 28 and striking out 62 in 14 games (13 starts) covering 62 2/3 innings last year in his third big-league season.

Thu Apr 14 202221:59Griffin Canning Set For Bullpen Session Tuesday
Los Angeles Angels pitcher Griffin Canning (back) is scheduled to throw a bullpen session on Tuesday. A month ago, he had a setback with his lower back strain while throwing a bullpen session, delaying his 2022 regular season debut. The 25-year-old is competing for a spot in Los Angeles' six-man rotation after missing most of last year with a back issue. He isn't eligible to return from the 60-day injured list until June 1. The right-hander posted a respectable 3.99 ERA and a 56:23 K: BB over 56 1/3 innings in 2020. Canning will continue to work his way from his back issue and remains an IL stash in deep-league formats.

Wed Mar 16 202223:38Griffin Canning Expected To Miss Start Of Season
Los Angeles Angels starting pitcher Griffin Canning (back) had a setback with his lower back strain while throwing a bullpen session a month ago and is expected to miss the start of the regular season. The right-hander was set to compete for the sixth spot in the starting rotation after missing most of 2021 with the same injury. He's scheduled to start playing catch in around a week, but he won't throw off a mound again for four weeks. Jaime Barria and Reid Detmers are now the top candidates to take the Angels final rotation spot, although Janson Junk, Packy Naughton and Jhonathan Diaz could be in the mix as well. Canning had a 5.60 ERA and 1.48 WHIP in 14 outings (13 starts) over 62 2/3 innings last year before his back flared up.

Tue Aug 10 202115:35Griffin Canning Out For The Year
Los Angeles Angels right-hander Griffin Canning (back) is out for the remainder of the season, according to Bill Shaikin of the Los Angeles Times. Griffin hasn't appeared in a major league game since the beginning of July and was optioned to Triple-A Salt Lake on July 3. He made one start in the minors before landing on the IL with a lower back strain. Canning, who the Angels expected to be a key member of their pitching staff, struggled mightily this year, posting a 5.60 ERA with 62 strikeouts, 28 walks, and 14 HRs allowed over 62.2 innings. Fantasy managers should have already dropped Canning in almost every league, but he should now only be stashed in dynasty leagues.

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — Shohei Ohtani struck out nine over six innings of one-run ball for the Angels, but the San Francisco Giants rallied for seven runs in the 13th inning of a 9-3 victory over Los Angeles on Wednesday. Steven Duggar had an RBI double in the 12th and a two-run single in the 13th for the Giants, who finally blew it open while the Angels had outfielder Taylor Ward playing catcher and starting pitcher Griffin Canning playing left field as the fallout from an untimely injury to Kurt Suzuki and a series of strategic decisions made to allow Ohtani to hit for himself. Mike Tauchman struck out five times before hitting a three-run homer to cap the Giants’ 13th-inning rally. Brandon Crawford put San Francisco ahead to stay with a bases-loaded walk from Alex Claudio (1-2), who walked three straight in the 13th. The 13-inning game matched the longest in the majors since the institution of the runner-on-second-base rule to open extra innings last season. Dominic Leone (1-0) won despite... [More]
