Sun May 512:27Wenceel Perez Scratched With Illness
Detroit Tigers outfielder Wenceel Perez (illness) was scratched from Sunday's lineup in the Bronx against the New York Yankees due to an illness. Rookie second baseman Colt Keith will now enter the lineup at second base while batting seventh, with Andy Ibanez at third base and leading off and Matt Vierling in right field and in the two-hole versus Yankees left-hander Nestor Cortes. Perez, who was slated to make his seventh straight start, should be considered day-to-day heading into Monday's series opener against the Cleveland Guardians. The 24-year-old has earned more playing time by hitting .302 (16-for-53) in the early going with three homers, eight RBI and two stolen bases for the Tigers. Ibanez and Vierling are both worth looking at as low-cost DFS sleepers at the top of Detroit's lineup.

Tue Apr 3023:54Wenceel Perez Hits Two Home Runs To Power Tigers To Victory
Detroit Tigers outfielder Wenceel Perez went 3-for-4 at the plate with two home runs in the second game of Tuesday's doubleheader against the St. Louis Cardinals. Perez launched a solo shot in the bottom of the second and then hit a two-run blast in the seventh. The 24-year-old has performed very well in his first 15 games at the major-league level with a .302/.375/.628 stat line with three home runs and two swiped bags. Perez has now started in seven consecutive games and is worth looking into in AL-only formats and deeper mixed leagues due to his recent power surge.

Sat Apr 2009:36Wenceel Perez Collects Three Hits, Two RBI
Detroit Tigers outfielder Wenceel Perez went 3-for-5 with two singles and a triple in Friday's 5-4 win over the Twins. Perez also drove in two runs, scored twice, and stole a base. In a tie ballgame, the 24-year-old's last hit came in the ninth inning after the Twins intentionally walked the batter in front of him, and it drove in what would be the winning run. Perez has only played in seven MLB games, but is 5-for-16 (.313), including a double and a triple, along with two RBI, three runs scored, and a pair of stolen bases. He had 26 steals in the minors last season, so he does have some speed. If he keeps this up he'll certainly put himself on the fantasy radar.

Mon Apr 812:54Wenceel Perez On His Way To The Big Leagues
MLive's Evan Woodbery writes that El Varon Sports is reporting that Detroit Tigers infielder/outfielder Wenceel Perez is being promoted to the big leagues on Monday. Perez also shared the news on his Instagram story on Monday morning. The club's No. 20 prospect, per MLB Pipeline, has been playing the outfield in eight games with Triple-A Toledo to start the 2024 season and had gone 7-for-33 (.212) with a home run, five RBI, four stolen bases and eight runs scored in his first 37 plate appearances this year. The 24-year-old had an .890 OPS at Toledo in 35 games last year and also stole 26 bases in three minor-league stops. It remains to be seen how much Perez will actually play in Detroit, but he's at least worth a waiver-wire consideration for his speed in AL-only fantasy leagues for now.

Tue Apr 218:34Wenceel Perez Off To Hot Start
Detroit Tigers shortstop Wenceel Perez has gradually climbed through the farm system since being signed out of the Dominican Republic in 2016. He made his Triple-A debut last season and looked solid, reaching base at a high rate and maintaining a K/BB rate near 1.0. He lacks power and struggles to hit left-handed pitching but makes up for these deficiencies with solid contact skills, impressive base running, and pure athleticism. Perez is off to a strong start this season, hitting 3-for-11 with a double, two triples, and zero strikeouts last week. He also drove in two runs, walked twice, and stole two bases. If he can continue to avoid strikeouts and extend plays with his legs, he will be able to make up for his lack of power in the majors.
