Wed Feb 2100:37Brendan McKay Faces Live Hitters Tuesday
Tampa Bay Rays pitcher Brendan McKay (elbow) successfully threw live batting practice Tuesday, the first time he had pitched to hitters since August of 2022. The former fourth overall pick in the 2017 draft has endured several injuries, the latest being Tommy John surgery in September of 2022. McKay is at camp as a non-roster invitee and has a long way to get in shape to pitch in the big leagues again, but his pedigree and the way the Rays manage their pitching staff could make him worth monitoring throughout the season. He may have the opportunity to become fantasy-relevant at some point.

Tue Nov 15 202200:39Rays Release Brendan McKay Monday
The Tampa Bay Rays released former first-round pick starting pitcher/potential two-way player Brendan McKay Monday, per Tampa Bay Times' Marc Topkin. The 26-year-old lefty was the fourth overall pick in the 2017 draft. McKay made his big-league debut in 2019, pitching 49 innings with a 5.14 ERA. However, he has dealt with several arm injuries and hasn't played with the Rays since. Most recently, he had Tommy John surgery and will likely not pitch again until 2024. The Rays are interested in re-signing him to a new longer-term, minor-league contract.

Fri Sep 9 202221:15Brendan McKay Needs Tommy John Surgery
Tampa Bay Rays left-hander Brendan McKay (elbow) will go in for Tommy John surgery next week, according to the Tampa Bay Times' Marc Topkin. McKay threw just one pitch in a rehab start for Triple-A Durham in late August after recovering from thoracic outlet syndrome earlier in the season. The once highly-prized prospect hasn't pitched in the big leagues since 2019. McKay is likely to miss all of the 2023 season with a 2024 return to the field the most likely timeframe for his recovery.

Thu Aug 25 202223:24Brendan McKay Exits Thursday's Start Early
Tampa Bay Rays pitcher Brendan McKay (shoulder) exited his start with Triple-A Durham on Thursday after throwing only one pitch. He made his first appearance of the season Thursday after being reinstated from the 60-day injured list on August 23. The 26-year-old had been recovering from thoracic outlet syndrome surgery in November and hasn't pitched in the majors since 2019. The severity of McKay's injury is unknown, and he is considered day-to-day. The southpaw will undergo an MRI on Friday and is mainly a stash in dynasty leagues. Stay tuned.

Thu Apr 28 202211:17Shane Baz To Face Hitters Soon, Brendan McKay Shut Down
Tampa Bay Rays right-hander Shane Baz (elbow), who had arthroscopic surgery on his right elbow in the spring, is throwing bullpen sessions and could start facing hitters in live batting practice soon. Barring any setbacks, Baz could be ready when he's eligible to return from the 60-day injured list on June 6. On a more ominous note, left-hander Brendan McKay (shoulder), who is recovering from surgery for thoracic outlet syndrome, has been shut down for at least a few days due to soreness in his surgically repaired left shoulder. In other rehab news, reliever Ryan Yarbrough (groin) will make his second rehab start on Thursday for Triple-A Durham. Nick Anderson (elbow) is throwing bullpens, while Tyler Glasnow (elbow) and Yonny Chirinos (elbow) are playing catch.

Wed Nov 24 202121:23Brendan McKay Undergoes Thoracic Outlet Surgery
Tampa Bay Rays pitcher Brendan McKay (shoulder) underwent thoracic outlet syndrome decompression surgery Tuesday, according to an announcement from the team. Per the announcement, "McKay will focus on rehabbing as a pitcher ... with the expectation that he will resume throwing no later than early February." The fourth-overall pick in the 2017 draft out of Louisville, McKay owns a 5.14 ERA and 4.03 FIP in 49 career Major League innings. Tampa Bay's current rotation options for next season include Shane Baz, Luis Patino, Drew Rasmussen, Ryan Yarbrough, and Tommy Romero.

Wed Aug 25 202120:36Brendan McKay Likely Done For Season
Tampa Bay Rays pitcher Brendan McKay (elbow) is likely done for the season after suffering a flexor strain during his rehab assignment, according to Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times. McKay had been working his way back from shoulder surgery, and had recently joined Double-A Montgomery for a rehab assignment when he suffered this latest injury. Topkin reports that he has received a PRP injection and will now be shut down for two to three weeks. McKay missed the 2020 campaign following a bout with COVID-19 followed by shoulder tightness that would require surgery. It was unlikely that he would have any fantasy value this year, and now it's all but certain of that fact.

Tue Aug 18 202019:23Rays' 2-way player McKay to have season-ending surgery
NEW YORK (AP) — Tampa Bay Rays two-way rookie Brendan McKay will have season-ending surgery on his left throwing shoulder Wednesday. The 24-year-old McKay tested positive for the coronavirus in early July and missed most of the club's preseason camp. He was cleared to resume activities July 31 and reported to the club's alternate site, but then experienced stiffness in his pitching shoulder and was shut down last week. “Obviously frustration, but we’re optimistic with the procedure that Brendan will have. Hopefully we’ll have him for 2021 spring training and go from there,” Rays manager Kevin Cash said Tuesday night before a series opener against the Yankees. “There’s no doubt it’s unfortunate for him, for us, because we probably would have already been using him, but just the shoulder never cooperated.”Cash said the issue is in the back of McKay's shoulder, but the exact nature of the injury won't be known until after the procedure. McKay was 2-4 with a 5.14 ERA in 13 games (11 starts) last season, and went 2 for 10 with a home run as a designated hitter. He's also played 49 minor league games at first base since being selected fourth overall in the 2017 draft out of Louisville. The Rays sit in second place in the AL East entering Tuesday’s action, 2 1/2 games behind the Yankees.___More AP MLB: https://apnews.com/MLB and https://twitter.com/AP_Sports

Mon Jul 20 202004:22Broken bats: NL pitchers ponder season with no swings
Three or four hours before a National League game, they’d be cackling around the cage.Madison Bumgarner and buddies — or pitchers from any home team, really — taking batting practice under an afternoon sun in an otherwise empty ballpark. After all the bunting drills, when they finally got to swing some lumber, you’d hear oohs and aahs, hoots and hollers, boasting and bragging, teasing and laughing. Maybe even the occasional wager or two. But that merry pursuit of a secondary skill is suddenly an endangered species in baseball. Under new rules for this abbreviated season delayed by the coronavirus, all games will include the designated hitter — knocking NL pitchers right out of the batter’s box.“Well, obviously my thoughts don’t really matter,” said a smiling Bumgarner, the Arizona Diamondbacks newcomer who leads active pitchers with 19 career home runs. “I do what I’m told. I’ll sit there and pitch and that’s it for now. I think that’s obviously where everybody wants the game to go, so... [More]

Sun Jun 28 202020:51Franco one of several top prospects picked for player pools
Top prospect Wander Franco is part of the Tampa Bay Rays' 60-man player pool, and the Detroit Tigers are including their most heralded young pitchers as baseball gears up for its abbreviated season.Sunday was the deadline for teams to submit player pools, although additions can be made later. Many teams announced pools well below the 60-player limit.Franco, a 19-year-old shortstop, is ranked as the No. 1 prospect in baseball by MLB Pipeline. He spent last season at Class A, so it would be quite a jump for him to contribute in the majors in the immediate future, but putting him in the player pool makes him an option for the Rays — and could help his development in a year when the coronavirus shut down the minor leagues.Pitcher Brendan McKay and infielder Vidal Brujan, two other top Tampa Bay prospects, also made the pool.“They are some of our more advanced prospects," Rays general manager Erik Neander said. “Certainly on the position player side that’s where things went and why Wander was...
