Thu Apr 2511:17Garrett Cleavinger Records Second Save Wednesday
Tampa Bay Rays reliever Garrett Cleavinger picked up his second save in four days in Wednesday's 7-5 victory over the Tigers. With closer Pete Fairbanks on the IL, Cleavinger has been used to close out games and has been successful so far in doing so. It was thought that this would be a closer-by-committee situation, but Jason Adam was used in the seventh and eighth innings in Wednesday's game, while Colin Poche blew a save opportunity on Tuesday, so Cleavinger might be the front runner for save opportunities at this point. These two saves were Cleavinger's first two of his career, so he has no prior experience in the role, but has a solid 2.53 ERA so far on the season and has struck out 14 batters in 10 2/3 IP. The command could use some work, as he's walked nine batters thus far including one in the ninth inning on Wednesday, but so far it hasn't been a real problem for him. The 30-year-old could get a handful more save opportunities with Fairbanks on the shelf, and could be picked up in most leagues for managers in need of saves.

Tue Feb 1314:27No Restrictions For Garrett Cleavinger
Tampa Bay Rays manager Kevin Cash said that left-hander Garrett Cleavinger (knee) is considered fully healthy and won't have any restrictions in spring training. Cleavinger underwent ACL and meniscus surgery on his right knee in May of last year but is good to go for the 2024 campaign. The 29-year-old southpaw made 15 relief appearances for the Rays in 2023 before his injury, allowing five runs (four earned) on six hits (two homers) while walking six and striking out 14 in 12 innings. He should return to a high-leverage role in the back of Tampa's bullpen this year if he can stay healthy. Cleavinger doesn't have any career saves or holds, but he should at least get some holds under his belt this year.

Tue May 9 202301:40Garrett Cleavinger Likely Out For The Season
Tampa Bay Rays left-hander Garrett Cleavinger (knee) is dealing with a torn right ACL in his knee and is likely out for the rest of the season. Cleavinger collided with New York Yankees outfielder Aaron Hicks in the game on Sunday and will now face a long rehab. The 29-year-old southpaw was proving to be a key piece of Tampa's bullpen so far this year, posting a 3.00 ERA (4.94 FIP), 1.00 WHIP, six walks and 14 strikeouts in 12 innings over his 15 relief appearances. He was even better in 13 relief outings for the Rays in 2022 with a 2.41 ERA (1.77 FIP), 0.64 WHIP, four walks and 25 strikeouts in 18 2/3 innings pitched.

Sun Aug 8 202114:30Garrett Cleavinger Placed On IL Sunday
Los Angeles Dodgers relief pitcher Garrett Cleavinger (oblique) was placed on the 10-day injured list on Sunday with an oblique injury, according to Bill Plunkett of the Orange County Register. To replace him on the active roster, the Dodgers recalled pitcher Justin Bruihl from Triple-A Oklahoma City. Cleavinger has had a solid year out of the bullpen, going 2-4 with a 3.00 ERA, 1.778 WHIP and 25 percent strikeout rate over 18 innings of work. However he hasn't been an option in SV/HLD formats, as he has no saves or holds over 22 appearances this season. He can safely be left on the waiver wire in all formats.

Wed May 12 202101:46Bieber extends strikeout record, pitching Indians past Cubs
CLEVELAND (AP) — Shane Bieber pitched out of some early trouble before extending his strikeout record and César Hernández hit a two-run homer, sending the Cleveland Indians to a 3-2 win over the Chicago Cubs on Tuesday night. Bieber (4-2) struck out eight and has now fanned at least that many in 20 consecutive starts, a major league mark he builds on every time out. The right-hander’s streak was in jeopardy, but he got Nick Martini for strikeout No. 8 in the seventh. The reigning AL Cy Young Award winner wasn’t as sharp as usual and needed a career-high 121 pitches to go 6 2/3 innings. James Karinchak finished the seventh for Bieber and worked the eighth. Emmanuel Clase gave up two singles in the ninth, but got Matt Duffy to bounce into a game-ending double play for his seventh save. Hernández homered in the fifth off Adbert Alzolay (1-3), who matched Bieber for six innings. SEATTLE (AP) — John Means threw the major leagues’ third no-hitter this season and came within a wild pitch on a third strike of a perfect game, pitching the Baltimore Orioles over the Seattle Mariners 6-0 on Wednesday. Means (4-0) struck out 12. Seattle’s Sam Haggerty raced to first after he struck out swinging on a curveball in the dirt on a 1-2 count with one outs in the third inning that bounced away from catcher Pedro Severino. When Seattle did make contact against the 28-year-old left-hander, it was weak and there were no threats to fall in for a hit. Means lowered his ERA to 1.37 and became the first individual Orioles pitcher to toss a no-hitter since Jim Palmer against Oakland on Aug,. 13, 1969. It was the 10th no-hitter in franchise history — six in Baltimore after four as the St. Louis Browns. Means joined a... [More]

Mon Apr 26 202100:41Bumgarner has 7-inning no-hitter, doesn't count in records
ATLANTA (AP) — Madison Bumgarner threw a seven-inning no-hitter, an achievement that won’t count in the Major League Baseball record book but completed a dominant day of Arizona Diamondbacks pitching for a 7-0 win over the Atlanta Braves and a doubleheader sweep Sunday. Bumgarner (2-2) struck out seven and walked none. The only Braves batter who reached base against him came on shortstop Nick Ahmed’s throwing error in the second inning. Officially, Bumgarner’s gem won’t count in the list of no-hitters. MLB’s eight-man committee on statistical accuracy decided in 1991 that a no-hitter was a game of nine or more innings that ended with no hits. In the opener, Zac Gallen (1-0) pitched a one-hitter, allowing Freddie Freeman’s sharp single to right-center field with one out in the sixth of a 5-0 win. This was the first time a team pitched two complete-game shutouts in a doubleheader since Boston’s Reggie Cleveland and Don Aase at Toronto on Sept. 5 1977 Arizona has won six of seven. Stephen... Mon Mar 29 202100:25Mad Bum gets opener for D-backs; Kluber is Yanks' No. 2
The Arizona Diamondbacks are ready to open the season in familiar fashion: with Mad Bum on the mound. Madison Bumgarner was tabbed by manager Torey Lovullo to make his second straight opening day start for the Diamondbacks on Thursday at San Diego. The 31-year-old four-time All-Star struggled last season — his first in Arizona — going 1-4 with a 6.48 ERA. He was 2-1 with a 6.35 ERA in three spring starts, including allowing six earned runs against Cincinnati on Friday. But Bumgarner, who signed a five-year, $85 million contract before last season, will still lead off a Diamondbacks rotation that includes Merrill Kelly, Caleb Smith, Taylor Widener and Luke Weaver. This will be the seventh opening day start in Bumgarner's career after doing so five times with San Francisco. The Yankees also are setting their rotation, announcing Sunday that Corey Kluber will follow ace Gerrit Cole against Toronto. Kluber, who signed a one-year, $11 million contract with New York, has thrown one inning in... [More]
