Wed Mar 612:24Luis Medina Has Grade 2 Knee Sprain, Won't Be Ready For Opening Day
Oakland Athletics right-hander Luis Medina (knee) was diagnosed with a Grade 2 MCL sprain. There is no timetable for his return, but manager Mark Kotsay said Medina definitely won't be ready for the start of the 2024 regular season at the end of March. The 24-year-old left his Cactus League start early on Monday with a right-knee sprain and arrived to the team's clubhouse on crutches on Wednesday. Medina had been competing for a spot in Oakland's Opening Day rotation this spring, but that's obviously out the window now, and he could miss the first month of the season. In his major-league debut in 2023, the Dominican hurler went 3-10 with a 5.42 ERA and 1.51 WHIP with 57 walks and 106 strikeouts in 109 2/3 innings over 23 appearances (17 starts).

Mon Mar 417:51Luis Medina Exits Monday's Start
Oakland A's right-hander Luis Medina departed Monday's Cactus League game against the Cincinnati Reds due to a right knee sprain. The 24-year-old was appearing in his second spring contest and has done well with six punchouts while allowing just one earned run across 3 1/3 innings of work. As a rookie, Medina tossed 109 2/3 innings with the A's in the 2023 season, working to a 5.42 ERA across 23 outings, 17 of which were starts. He also struggled to a 6.48 ERA across 6 appearances (five starts) at the Triple-A level in his 16 2/3 innings of work at that level. All things told, Medina should line up as the A's fifth starter in the 2024 season but his fantasy value is at a minimum at this point.

Mon Sep 4 202314:12Luis Medina Activated And Starting Monday
The Oakland Athletics reinstated rookie right-hander Luis Medina (finger) from the 15-day injured list on Monday and optioned left-hander Kirby Snead to Triple-A Las Vegas in a corresponding move. Media rejoins the team's starting rotation to face the Toronto Blue Jays after sitting out the last couple of weeks due to a blister on his pitching hand. Fantasy managers should consider the 24-year-old to be a poor streaming option to begin the week in a tough matchup, especially after he went just 3 1/3 innings in his only minor-league rehab start. In his first major-league season, Media has gone 3-8 with a 5.44 ERA (4.91 FIP), 1.53 WHIP, 43 walks and 84 strikeouts in 86 innings over 18 appearances (13 starts).

Thu May 11 202318:22Luis Medina Draws Start On Thursday Against Texas
Oakland Athletics pitcher Luis Medina has been called upon to start Thursday's series opener against the Rangers. It was thought Zach Neal was being recalled from Triple-A to toe the rubber for this one, but he will instead function from the bullpen presumably. Medina, who was also recalled from the minors for Thursday's contest, has a 12.60 ERA in one start against the Angels in the majors this year. Neither of Medina or Neal represent viable fantasy options against a potent Rangers lineup Thursday night.

Tue Apr 25 202316:33Luis Medina Called Up From Triple-A Las Vegas
Oakland A's pitcher Luis Medina has been called up from Triple-A and will start Wednesday's game against the rival Los Angeles Angels. Acquired from the Yankees in last season's trade involving Frankie Montas, the 23-year-old Medina has made three starts for Las Vegas this season, posting a 3.86 ERA alongside a strong 27.5% K%. However, Medina has yet to pitch more than four innings in any of three starts while his long-standing control issues have reared their head as he sports a sky-high 20% BB% after working to a 13% mark in the 2022 campaign. The right-hander doesn't appear ripe with fantasy relevance as he'll need to cut down big-time on the free passes while pitching deeper into games. Right-hander James Kaprielian, who has been blown up for a 12.94 ERA in 16 innings, was optioned to Triple-A in a corresponding move.

Mon Aug 1 202216:50A's Acquire Prospects Ken Waldichuk, Luis Medina
The Oakland Athletics acquired left-hander Ken Waldichuk, right-hander Luis Medina, left-hander JP Sears and second baseman Cooper Bowman from the New York Yankees on Monday in exchange for starting pitcher Frankie Montas and reliever Lou Trivino, according to a source. It's a nice prospect haul for the A's, as MLB Pipeline had Waldichuk ranked as the Yankees' No. 5 prospect, with Medina at No. 10, Sears at No. 20 and Bowman at No. 21. Waldichuk stands at 6-foot-4 and 220 pounds and has a 3.59 ERA, 1.28 WHIP and 70 strikeouts in 47 2/3 innings over 11 starts at Triple-A in 2022. Medina has elite raw stuff on the mound, but his command has been lacking, and he's likely to surface as a reliever in the big leagues. Sears is more of a control artist and has a 2.05 ERA, 0.86 WHIP and 15 K's in 22 innings in the majors this year. Bowman is best known for his speed.
