Thu Apr 2500:43Joe Ryan Tallies First Win Against White Sox
Minnesota Twins starting pitcher Joe Ryan tossed a quality start in Wednesday's 6-3 victory over the division-rival Chicago White Sox, striking out eight hitters while giving up three runs on four hits (two home runs) and one walk for the win. After hurling two clean opening innings, Ryan yielded a couple of solo homers to the seventh and ninth batters in Chicago's lineup during the third before Braden Shewmake stole home in the fifth to tack on another score. The 27-year-old star right-hander is off to a fine start in the 2024 regular season, posting a 3.77 ERA, 1.01 WHIP, and a spectacular 38:4 K:BB over 28 2/3 frames (five starts). Up next for Ryan is another scheduled appearance on Monday against the White Sox, who are now slashing an anemic .189/.263/.292 as a team with an MLB-low 53 runs scored through 24 outings.

Sat Mar 212:58Joe Ryan Displays New Sinker On Friday
Minnesota Twins right-hander Joe Ryan, who has been criticized for relying too much on his fastball at times, displayed a new sinker in his Grapefruit League debut on Friday. Ryan threw five different pitches -- a four-seam fastball, a sweeper, splitter, a "shorter slider," and his new sinker. "It kind of just gives me the options now to throw whatever I want and whatever a lineup might dictate," Ryan said. "Just put a little indecision in the hitters' heads, and I think that always helps." The 27-year-old mostly relied on his four-seamer, sweeper and splitter in 2023, and he mostly used his fastball and splitter in his complete-game shutout of Boston on June 22. Ryan was great to start last year but fell apart and was injured late. If his secondary pitches can improve in 2024, he should serve as a solid high-end No. 3 starter for fantasy managers.

Fri Mar 117:29Joe Ryan Not Sharp Friday
Minnesota Twins pitcher Joe Ryan was not at his best in a Grapefruit League contest versus the Boston Red Sox on Friday. Ryan started the game and allowed two earned runs on three hits and a walk in two innings of work. He also struck out a pair. It was the first outing of the spring for the right-hander as he looks to clean up his run prevention in 2024. After working to a 3.55 ERA in 2023, Ryan posted a 4.51 mark across 29 starts in the 2023 campaign. However, he also increased his strikeout rate and lowered his walk rate, resulting in a fantastic 24.3% K-BB%, the second-best mark in baseball among the 45 pitchers who threw at least 160 innings a season ago. He remains susceptible to the long ball after posting a 31.6% ground-ball rate and 1.78 HR/9 last season but he is a rock-solid fantasy asset heading into the 2024 campaign.

Tue Oct 10 202312:49Joe Ryan To Start Game 4 Of ALDS
Minnesota Twins right-hander Joe Ryan has been named the starter for Game 4 of the American League Division Series on Wednesday against the Houston Astros. Ryan will be making his postseason debut in Wednesday's start after not being used in the two-game sweep of the Toronto Blue Jays in the wild-card series last week. The 27-year-old has the ability to miss bats, but he was inconsistent in his third major-league season, going 11-10 with a career-high 4.51 ERA (4.13 FIP), 1.17 WHIP, 34 walks and a career-high 197 strikeouts in 29 starts covering 161 2/3 innings. Ryan didn't fare well in his two starts against the Astros this year, either, allowing nine earned runs on seven hits (three home runs) while walking four and striking out 16 in 10 innings pitched.

Fri Oct 6 202312:15Joe Ryan, Bailey Ober Could Start Game 1 Against Astros
The Minnesota Twins haven't announced who will start for them in Game 1 of the American League Division Series on Saturday against the Houston Astros, but the likeliest candidates are right-hander Joe Ryan, who was scheduled to start Game 3 of the wild-card series against the Toronto Blue Jays, and righty Bailey Ober, who looked great in his final regular season start last Sunday. Ober wasn't included on the roster for the wild-card series, but the Twins have dropped hints he'll pitch at some point in the ALDS. He was sent to the minors in September for mental and physical rest, and he went 2-0 with a 2.08 ERA and 26 K's in 21 2/3 innings since returning on Sept. 15. Ryan hasn't been nearly as great since returning from the Injured List on Aug. 26, and he had a 4.79 ERA in seven second-half starts.

Tue Oct 3 202300:48Joe Ryan To Start Game 3 If Needed
Minnesota Twins starting pitcher Joe Ryan will start Game 3 of the wild-card series against the Blue Jays if the series lasts that long, per Star Tribune's Bobby Nightengale. Ryan would face Chris Bassitt on the other side. The 27-year-old had a very strong start to the season but was once again plagued by home runs issues and finished with an 11-10 record, a 4.51 ERA, a 1.17 WHIP, a 29.3% strikeout rate, and a 1.78 HR/9 rate in 29 starts over 161 2/3 innings pitched. Ryan only faced the Blue Jays once during the regular season, allowing three runs on six hits and a walk with four strikeouts over six IP.

Mon Sep 25 202300:04Joe Ryan Collects Win Sunday
Minnesota Twins starting pitcher Joe Ryan struck out 10 batters while conceding just three runs over six innings in a victorious outing against the Angels on Sunday. Ryan didn't give up a walk in the contest. As the regular season winds down, he is considered the front-runner to be the Twins' third starter in the postseason. However, final decisions have yet to be made. The 27-year-old's last regular-season start is scheduled for next Saturday in Denver against the Colorado Rockies.

Sat Aug 26 202310:53Joe Ryan Activated From Injured List, Will Start On Saturday
Minnesota Twins starting pitcher Joe Ryan (groin) has been activated from the 15-day injured list and will start against the Texas Rangers on Saturday. Ryan was initially placed on the IL back on Aug. 3 with a left-groin strain, so his return to the Twins' rotation is a welcome sight for the team and fantasy managers alike. The 27-year-old was incredibly effective through the first two months of the season, posting a 2.77 ERA (2.7 FIP), but then began to falter in June (4.83 ERA/4.59 FIP) before the wheels fell off in July (6.39 ERA/5.28 FIP). Overall, Ryan owns a 9-8 record, 4.43 ERA, 1.13 WHIP, and 152:25 K/BB over 126 innings (22 starts). He'll look to lengthen the Twins' lead in the American League Central on Saturday.

Fri Aug 25 202318:42Joe Ryan To Officially Start On Saturday
Minnesota Twins starting pitcher Joe Ryan (groin) was expected to make his return to the mound on Saturday. Twins' manager Rocco Baldelli confirmed that report on Friday, so Ryan will make his return to the mound on Saturday against the Texas Rangers. The 27-year-old has been sidelined since early August due to a left groin strain. Before that, Ryan held a 4.43 ERA, 1.14 WHIP and a 152/25 K/BB ratio across 22 starts. Fantasy managers can prepare to get Ryan back in their lineups for Saturday.

Wed Aug 23 202317:02Joe Ryan Expected To Start On Saturday
Minnesota Twins right-hander Joe Ryan (groin) is expected to return from the 10-day injured list to start on Saturday against the Texas Rangers. The Twins have been pleased with how Ryan has looked on his minor-league rehab start and they announced on Tuesday that his next start would likely be back in the big leagues. The 27-year-old tossed 71 pitches in his last rehab start for Triple-A St. Paul last week and struck out seven in four innings pitched. Ryan will be making his first start this weekend since going on the injured list on Aug. 3 with a left-groin strain. He will have fantasy appeal in all leagues the rest of the way after striking out 152 hitters in 126 innings this year over his 22 starts for the Twins.

Tue Aug 22 202321:08Joe Ryan Finished With His Rehab Assignment
Minnesota Twins starting pitcher Joe Ryan (groin) is likely done his rehab assignment and will make his next start in the big leagues, possibly sometime this weekend, according to Betsy Helfand of the Pioneer Press. The right-hander has been on the sideline since the beginning of August after suffering a groin issue and made just one start during his rehab with Triple-A St. Paul. Over 126 innings this season, Ryan owns a 4.43 ERA, 1.13 WHIP, 29.1% strikeout rate, and 4.8% walk rate with a 9-8 record. The 27-year-old is better than his ERA shows, and fantasy managers should look forward to having him back in their rotation.

Fri Aug 18 202312:35Joe Ryan To Make Rehab Start Friday
Minnesota Twins right-hander Joe Ryan (groin) will make a minor-league rehab start on Friday for Triple-A St. Paul. Ryan will probably only need one or two rehab starts on the farm before the Twins feel comfortable putting him back in their starting rotation. After all, he's been on the injured list for just over two weeks with a groin injury. At the earliest, the 27-year-old could return next week in a tough matchup against the Milwaukee Brewers. In 22 starts (126 innings) this year, Ryan has gone 9-8 with a 4.43 ERA (4.14 FIP), 1.13 WHIP, 25 walks and a career-high 152 strikeouts in his third big-league season. He struggled in three starts before going on the injured list, giving up 15 earned runs on 23 hits (eight homers) while walking four and fanning 21 in 13 2/3 frames.

Tue Aug 15 202322:46Joe Ryan Could Begin Rehab Assignment Soon
Minnesota Twins right-hander Joe Ryan (groin) threw a successful bullpen session on Tuesday, and if he comes out of it feeling good on Wednesday, the next step would be for him to go on a minor-league rehab assignment. It means that Ryan is pretty close to rejoining Minnesota's starting rotation for the stretch run. The 27-year-old will probably be ready to come off the injured list after a couple of rehab starts down on the farm. Barring a setback, Ryan could be back in the big leagues later this month. Before going on the IL, he went 9-8 with a 4.43 ERA, 1.13 WHIP and 152 strikeouts in 126 innings over his 22 starts. The strikeout upside makes him valuable in mixed leagues, but Ryan was struggling before his injury, posting an 8.87 ERA with 11 homers allowed in his previous five starts, although he had struck out 38 in 23 1/3 innings.

Thu Aug 3 202317:01Twins Put Joe Ryan On Injured List
The Minnesota Twins placed right-hander Joe Ryan (groin) on the 15-day injured list on Thursday with a left-groin strain and selected the contract of left-hander Dallas Keuchel from the minors in a corresponding move. Ryan has fallen on hard times on the mound of late for the Twins, and his groin injury might be the explanation. The 27-year-old allowed seven earned runs on nine hits (four home runs) while walking one and striking out four in four innings against the St. Louis Cardinals on Wednesday and has an 8.87 ERA with 11 home runs surrendered in 23 1/3 innings over his last five starts, dating back to July 9. After a very nice start to the year, Ryan is now 9-8 with a 4.43 ERA (4.15 FIP), 1.13 WHIP, 25 walks and a career-high 152 K's in 126 innings over 22 starts. Hopefully he'll be able to find his early season form once he's past his groin injury.

Wed Jun 28 202300:48Joe Ryan Gets Shelled Tuesday, Allows Five Homers
Minnesota Twins starting pitcher Joe Ryan had a very different outcome in Tuesday's 6-2 loss to the Braves than he did in his last start. Coming off of a complete-game shutout, Ryan pitched just three innings and allowed six runs on nine hits (including five home runs) and no walks with five strikeouts. The 27-year-old has a respectable 3.44 ERA through 16 starts but has been inconsistent. He now has two starts allowing six runs sandwiching his complete-game gem. Fantasy managers may be frustrated, but Ryan should have a strong chance to rebound in his next start against the Royals.

Thu Jun 22 202318:22Joe Ryan Twirls Shutout For Tremendous Rebound
Minnesota Twins starting pitcher Joe Ryan went the distance in Thursday's 6-0 triumph over the Boston Red Sox. The 27-year-old spun a shutout for his eighth win with nine strikeouts, scattering a mere three singles over 112 pitches for an utterly dominant showing. Ryan vehemently bounced back from a challenging four-start interval with a 6.08 ERA. The rising star sports a 2.98 ERA, 0.91 WHIP, and sparkling 100:15 K:BB through 93 2/3 innings overall. Ryan faces a stiff test for his next scheduled start on Tuesday against the Atlanta Braves.

Sun May 14 202309:12Joe Ryan Fans 10 Batters For Third Time This Year
Minnesota Twins starting pitcher Joe Ryan dominated the Chicago Cubs on Saturday night, launching six scoreless innings and punching out 10 hitters in the blowout win. The 26-year-old improved his ERA to 2.16 and picked up his sixth victory of the season. He has lasted six innings or longer in all eight starts in 2023, registering an incredible 57-to-7 strikeout-to-walk ratio. Ryan has also given up one run or less during four of his last six starts. The right-hander continues to make his claim for the first all-star nod of his career and will aim to remain one of fantasy's most consistent pitching options for a road visit with the Los Angeles Angels on Friday.

Thu Apr 20 202300:19Joe Ryan Picks Up Win Wednesday
Minnesota Twins starting pitcher Joe Ryan tossed six innings, allowing three runs on six hits in a 10-4 win over Boston Wednesday. The 26-year-old is off to a fantastic start with a 4-0 record, a 3.24 ERA, and a 0.76 WHIP. He's thrown in 25 innings so far, striking out 29 opposing batters. Ryan is slated to start against the Yankees again Monday, and he should be productive in fantasy leagues all season long.

Fri Apr 14 202300:28Joe Ryan Excels With New Pitch Mix
Minnesota Twins starting pitcher Joe Ryan tossed a gem Thursday, throwing seven one-run innings in an 11-2 win over the New York Yankees. Ryan was extremely sharp in this one, allowing just three hits while not walking a batter. He also struck out 10 batters for the second game in a row. The 26-year-old appears to have changed his pitch mix, opting for a sweeper instead of a slider or curveball and a splitter instead of a changeup. The mix seems to be working, as Ryan is 3-0 with a 2.84 ERA, 0.63 WHIP, and 26:3 K:BB ratio. His stock is rising rapidly.

Tue Feb 21 202311:29Joe Ryan Has Some New Pitches
Minnesota Twins right-hander Joe Ryan has been showing off a new slider and splitter in spring training this year. Ryan's slider drew rave reviews from hitters after the first full-squad workout on Monday, and he's also featuring a new split-changeup. He allowed eight home runs among 495 sliders thrown in 2022, so he wanted to refine the pitch this offseason. The 26-year-old isn't going to blow hitters away with his fastball, so more deception on his secondary pitches is key. He also allows more fly balls than ground balls, which can be an issue. Ryan had a strong rookie season, going 13-8 with a 3.55 ERA (3.99 FIP), 1.10 WHIP and 25% strikeout rate in 27 starts and 147 innings in 2022. His nice strikeout and walk rates make him a decent fantasy target as a No. 3 or 4 starter.
