Mon Mar 2518:23Clarke Schmidt Looks Strong On Monday
New York Yankees starting pitcher Clarke Schmidt was impressive during his outing against the New York Mets on Monday. Coming into camp there were some concerns if Schmidt would be able to keep up the high level of pitching that he showed last season. The right-hander has proven himself in camp and earned himself the fourth spot in the rotation. On Monday, Schmidt allowed one hit with six strikeouts over six innings of work. He'll be worth a look as a streaming option in mixed leagues.

Thu Feb 2217:44Clarke Schmidt Guaranteed A Rotation Spot
New York Yankees right-hander Clarke Schmidt is guaranteed a spot in the Opening Day starting rotation, according to manager Aaron Boone. Schmidt made a career-high 33 appearances (32 starts) for the Yankees last year, covering 159 innings. He went 9-9 with a 4.64 ERA (4.42 FIP) and 1.35 WHIP with 46 walks and 149 strikeouts. The 28-year-old hurler didn't really stand out at all despite a big increase in volume and failed to make it very deep into most of his starts. None of Schmidt's four pitches really stand out, but the Yankees will be hoping he can improve in his second full season as a big-league starter in the Bronx. It won't be easy in the tough American League East or at Yankee Stadium. Schmidt currently is outside of RotoBaller's top-100 starting pitcher rankings.

Thu Aug 3 202314:52Clarke Schmidt Getting The Ball Thursday
New York Yankees pitcher Clarke Schmidt will get the start Thursday night against the visiting Houston Astros. This marks the right-hander's 23rd appearance and 22nd start of the season while he has compiled a 4.39 ERA, 4.40 FIP, 4.23 SIERA, and a 15.5% K-BB% in that time. The good news is that he is pitching where he has been at his best this season as Schmidt owns a 4.01 ERA at Yankee Stadium this season, much better than his 4.91 mark on the road. Schmidt also owns a 5.1% BB% at home and an 8.2% BB% on the road. He will take on an Astros team that sits in a share of 18th with a .315 wOBA versus right-handed pitching on the season but recently got superstars Jose Altuve and Yordan Alvarez back from lengthy absences.

Sat May 20 202310:14Clarke Schmidt Picks Up Second Win Friday
New York Yankees starting pitcher Clarke Schmidt picked up his second win of the season in the team's 6-2 win over the Cincinnati Reds on the road on Friday night. Schmidt allowed only two earned runs on five hits while walking two and striking out six in his five innings of work. It was nice to see the 27-year-old right-hander turn things around after he surrendered a season-high seven runs in his last outing against the first-place Tampa Bay Rays. This one was a much easier matchup, and Schmidt delivered for his fantasy managers. Still, Schmidt hasn't been that effective so far in 2023, going 2-4 with a 6.00 ERA (4.41 FIP), 1.62 WHIP, 16 walks, 54 strikeouts and eight homers allowed in 45 innings (10 starts).

Wed May 3 202312:34Clarke Schmidt Taking On The Guardians Wednesday
New York Yankees starting pitcher Clarke Schmidt will take the bump Wednesday to face Shane Bieber and the Cleveland Guardians. The 27-year-old's 6.84 ERA and 1.68 WHIP leave a lot to be desired, but he owns a solid 26.9% strikeout rate and 5.9% walk rate. As his 3.99 xFIP indicates, Schmidt has been unlucky this season but has also completed five innings just twice and is 0-6 over his six starts. Fantasy managers in most leagues should hold onto the former first-rounder and hope a change of fortune, and a longer leash, are on their way. There's a chance that starts on Wednesday, considering the Guardians are running an 81 wRC+, the fourth lowest in baseball.

Tue Apr 18 202309:00Clarke Schmidt Looking To Improve His Numbers Tuesday
New York Yankees right-hander Clarke Schmidt will try to make some progress in his fourth start of the season against Jose Suarez and the Los Angeles Angels. The season hasn't been friendly to the 27-year-old, who owns an 8.44 ERA with 11 strikeouts and five walks across 10.2 innings. Schmidt is in his second campaign at the big leagues and was successful in 2022, when he posted a 3.12 ERA and 3.60 FIP, pitching mostly out of the bullpen. That's where the former first-round draft pick might find himself again if he can't figure things out, and fantasy managers should keep an eye on his performance moving forward.

Thu Mar 9 202312:51Clarke Schmidt, Domingo German Likely To Start In Rotation
With the injuries to New York Yankees starting pitchers Carlos Rodon (forearm) and Frankie Montas (shoulder), it's reasonable to assume that both Clarke Schmidt and Domingo German will start the 2023 season in the starting rotation. General manager Brian Cashman mentioned Deivi Garcia among those who could provide depth. Schmidt is the more attractive option for fantasy managers after he had a 3.12 ERA and 56 strikeouts in 57 2/3 innings last year, mostly in relief. Between the big leagues and minors, Schmidt had 102 K's in 90 2/3 frames, so the strikeout upside is there. German appeared in only 15 games (14 starts) for the Yanks last year due to a shoulder injury, and he had just three quality starts while showing another drop in velocity.

Sun May 1 202219:31Clarke Schmidt Optioned To Minors
New York Yankees pitcher Clarke Schmidt has been optioned to the minor leagues on Sunday. This is somewhat surprising considering Schmidt has been solid in his short time being up at the big league level. He has posted a 1.08 ERA, 0.96 WHIP and 8/4 K/BB ratio over 8 1/3 innings in the MLB. The assumption is that Schmidt is being sent down, so he can stretch out as a starter. He'll likely return to the Yankees rotation at some point this season.

Mon Apr 4 202221:59Clarke Schmidt Likely To Make Opening Day Roster
New York Yankees right-hander Clarke Schmidt has "an excellent shot" to travel north with the club for the start of the season, according to manager Aaron Boone. The young pitcher is currently the Yankees seventh-best prospect, as per MLB Pipeline, and is putting together a strong spring. Over 9.1 innings, he's compiled a 3.86 ERA, 11 strikeouts, and a 0.86 WHIP. Schmidt appeared in the majors last season, posting a 5.68 ERA, though in just over six innings. He had a lot of success in the minors in 2021, pitching to a 2.37 ERA with 46 strikeouts across 38 innings split between three levels. The native of Georgia will likely come out of the bullpen to begin the year but could ultimately pitch himself into the rotation if someone else falters. Schmidt's not worth drafting at this point, but fantasy managers should keep an eye on the Yankees plans and possibly claim him on the waiver wire.

Mon Sep 13 202119:01Clarke Schmidt Sent Back To Triple-A On Monday
The New York Yankees optioned starting pitcher Clarke Schmidt to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre after their 6-5 win over the Minnesota Twins on Monday. The 25-year-old Schmidt was called up from Triple-A to make his 2021 debut against the New York Mets on Sunday. He pitched 4 1/3 innings in the game and allowed seven hits, three walks and five runs (two earned) while striking out two. It's been an injury-plagued year for Schmidt, though he's managed some success in the minors. Over 27.1 innings spread across multiple levels of the minors this year, Schmidt has a 2.96 ERA and a 1.24 WHIP with 11.2 K/9. There's a solid chance he'll get another spot start with the Yankees before the end of the regular season. He may also find himself in a relief role with the team.

Sun Sep 12 202112:25Clarke Schmidt Recalled To Start Against Mets
New York Yankees starting pitcher Clarke Schmidt has been recalled and will take the mound against the New York Mets Sunday night. Infielder Andrew Velasquez was optioned to make room on the active roster. Schmidt has appeared in three games this season, including one start, and the top prospect has allowed five earned runs on seven hits and five walks in 6 1/3 innings. He's struck out seven batters. Fantasy managers in redraft leagues should surely avoid, but managers in dynasty and keeper formats should keep a close eye.

Fri Aug 6 202108:38Clarke Schmidt Transferred To Double-A For Rehab Stint
The New York Yankees transferred pitcher Clarke Schmidt (elbow) from Low-A Tampa to Double-A Somerset on Thursday. Schmidt suffered an elbow strain back in February and has been working his way back ever since. In his only rehab start at Low-A, he pitched three innings and allowed one hit, two walks and one run while striking out four. He could make his way back to the big leagues later this month for his 2021 debut provided he doesn't suffer any setbacks. Schmidt struggled in his first, brief stint in the majors last year, making three appearances (one start) and allowing five earned runs over 6.1 innings.
