Sat Apr 2014:01Gabriel Moreno Getting A Rest Saturday
Arizona Diamondbacks catcher Gabriel Moreno is on the bench for Saturday's game against the San Francisco Giants and left-hander Kyle Harrison. Moreno started and went 2-for-3 with a walk, a double, two runs, and three RBI as part of a massive 17-1 blowout win over the Giants but will get a break in a day game following a night game on Friday. The young backstop is hitting .241 without a homer on the season but his impressive 14.3% BB% is roughly double his tiny 7.9% K% across his first 63 trips to the plate on the young season. Moreno has dealt with a thumb injury that cost him a couple of starts earlier in the week but he is back to health and is a batting average-first fantasy asset.

Thu Apr 1816:01Gabriel Moreno Back In The Lineup Thursday
Arizona Diamondbacks catcher Gabriel Moreno (thumb) is back behind the plate and is batting sixth in the lineup on Thursday against the San Francisco Giants and right-hander Logan Webb. Moreno injured his right thumb on a wild pitch on Monday against the Chicago Cubs and was scratched from the starting lineup on both Tuesday and Wednesday. The 24-year-old did appear as a defensive replacement late in Tuesday's extra-inning game, though. Moreno is still looking for his first home run of the year while going 11-for-46 (.239) in his first 16 games of the 2024 season. Webb isn't the greatest of matchups for those setting DFS lineups, but don't ignore the fact that Moreno is currently hitting .444 in nine career at-bats against Webb.

Wed Apr 1715:12Gabriel Moreno Scratched From Lineup
Arizona Diamondbacks catcher Gabriel Moreno (thumb) was scratched from Wednesday's starting lineup against the Chicago Cubs in the series finale. Moreno suffered a right-thumb contusion on a wild pitch on Monday night and was then scratched from Tuesday's starting lineup as well before appearing later in the extra-inning win as a defensive replacement. The 24-year-old appears to be not quite comfortable enough swinging a bat to return to action for the Snakes, so Tucker Barnhart will catch again and bat eighth against Cubs left-hander Jordan Wicks. Fantasy baseball managers will want to check back on Thursday to see if Moreno is able to return to the field when the team faces the division-rival San Francisco Giants on the road.

Wed Apr 1712:32Gabriel Moreno Back Behind The Plate Against Cubs
Arizona Diamondbacks catcher Gabriel Moreno (thumb) is back behind the plate and is hitting seventh on Wednesday against left-hander Jordan Wicks and the Chicago Cubs. Moreno was scratched from Tuesday's lineup with a right-thumb contusion that he picked up on a wild pitch on Monday night. However, the 24-year-old entered the game as a defensive replacement late in Tuesday's extra-inning win and is now back in the starting lineup a day later for the series finale. One of the best young catchers in the game, especially on defense, Moreno is still searching for his first home run of the year and is hitting a modest .244 (11-for-45) with six RBI and five runs scored in his first 15 games. Moreno is hitless in his two career at-bats against Wicks.

Tue Apr 1619:40Gabriel Moreno Scratched With Thumb Contusion
Arizona Diamondbacks catcher Gabriel Moreno (thumb) was scratched from Tuesday's starting lineup against the Chicago Cubs with a right-thumb contusion, according to manager Torey Lovullo. The skipper said that Moreno is day-to-day, so check back on Wednesday to see if he's back in the lineup. The injury occurred on the wild pitch that Moreno tried to block in the top of the ninth inning that ended up tying the game in Tuesday's extra-inning loss to the Cubbies. The 24-year-old Venezuelan backstop has gone 11-for-45 (.244) to start the year with no homers and six RBI for the Snakes. Tucker Barnhart is catching left-hander Tommy Henry on Tuesday and is hitting ninth against Cubs right-hander Kyle Hendricks.

Sun Apr 1414:30Gabriel Moreno Getting A Rest Day On Sunday
Arizona Diamondbacks catcher Gabriel Moreno will get a breather in Sunday's series finale against the St. Louis Cardinals. Moreno has continued to hit the ball well and post a low strikeout rate once again this season, as he is currently in the 99th percentile among all qualified hitters with an 8.2% K-rate. He also has a strong .256 AVG with six RBI, three doubles, and one triple. Veteran Tucker Barnhart will serve as the backstop for Zac Gallen and make his fifth start of the season. Over his first four, Barnhart has hit for a .300 AVG and swiped one bag. Barnhart, who will bat ninth on Sunday, is worth looking at in DFS as he will face Miles Mikolas, who comes into the game with a hefty 4.76 ERA and 1.47 WHIP.

Wed Apr 1012:20Gabriel Moreno, Joc Pederson Sitting Out Wednesday
Arizona Diamondbacks catcher Gabriel Moreno and outfielder/designated hitter Joc Pederson are both out of the team's starting lineup on Wednesday as they face the Colorado Rockies. Tucker Barnhart is doing the catching and will hit eighth, while Ketel Marte will serve as the designated hitter and bat leadoff against Rockies lefty Austin Gomber. Kevin Newman is at second base and is batting ninth. Moreno had four hits on Tuesday but unsurprisingly will be on the bench in a day game after a night game. Pederson will now be on the bench for the fourth time in five games with Arizona facing a southpaw. After Marte went hitless on Monday and got the day off on Tuesday, he should be thrown back into all fantasy lineups on Wednesday, as he's hit a career .389 with two home runs and five RBI in 18 at-bats against Gomber.

Wed Apr 313:25Gabriel Moreno Getting A Day Off
Arizona Diamondbacks catcher Gabriel Moreno is receiving a day off for the matinee game on Wednesday versus the visiting New York Yankees. Tucker Barnhart will catch right-hander Merrill Kelly and will bat eighth against Yankees left-hander Carlos Rodon. Moreno showed last fall in the run up to the World Series that he's one of the most exciting young catchers in the game. The 24-year-old Venezuelan is off to a bit of a slow start offensively through five games, though, going 4-for-19 (.2110 with a double, triple, five RBI and four runs scored in 21 plate appearances. Fantasy managers shouldn't be very alarmed this early, however. Barnhart is 0-for-4 in his career against Rodon.

Sat Mar 1620:05Gabriel Moreno Expected Back In The Lineup On Sunday
Arizona Diamondbacks catcher Gabriel Moreno (back) is expected to return to the lineup for Sunday's spring game against the Los Angeles Angels. Moreno sat out the last few games due to lower-back tightness. The 24-year-old is slashing .235/.350/.471 with a home run, three RBI, and two runs scored over seven games this spring. He is Arizona's starting catcher and is a top-12 catcher heading into fantasy drafts. Moreno slashed .284/.339/.408 with seven home runs, 50 RBI, 33 runs, and six stolen bases over 111 games in 2023. With an NFBC ADP of 154 in March, Moreno is a solid option and is ninth out of all catchers in the latest RotoBaller consensus rankings.

Thu Mar 1421:31Gabriel Moreno Nursing Back Tightness
Arizona Diamondbacks catcher Gabriel Moreno (back) was scratched from Thursday's Cactus League lineup due to lower back tightness, per manager Torey Lovullo. Tucker Barnhart started behind the plate, and he will also start Friday's spring training game against the Milwaukee Brewers. There's nothing here to suggest Moreno's 174.5 Yahoo ADP should be affected, and he should continue to be drafted as a top-12 fantasy backstop. The 24-year-old Venezuelan contact hitter was the No. 1 prospect for the Toronto Blue Jays in 2022 and achieved a Gold Glove Award during his debut season with the D-backs in 2023 following the trade that sent Daulton Varsho to Toronto. Although Moreno came up small for Arizona during the World Series, he slashed an impressive .311/.382/.496 with four home runs, eight doubles, 22 RBI, and two stolen bases over his final 136 plate appearances of the regular season.

Sun Mar 323:22Gabriel Moreno Launches First Spring Homer
Arizona Diamondbacks catcher Gabriel Moreno went 2-for-3 with a double, home run, and an additional run scored in Sunday's 10-4 spring loss to the Milwaukee Brewers. Moreno launched a 400-foot shot off Freddy Peralta in the third inning for his first spring homer. The 24-year-old is off to a solid start this spring, hitting .300 with a home run and three RBI over four games. He is coming off a fantastic postseason, where he smashed four home runs in 70 plate appearances. Moreno slashed .284/.339/.408 with seven home runs, 50 RBI, 33 runs, and six stolen bases over 111 games in 2023. He is the 11th catcher going off the draft board with a current NFBC ADP of 149. Moreno should contribute enough in each category to become a viable fantasy option in leagues that require just one catcher.

Sun Oct 29 202318:55Gabriel Moreno Homers In Game 2 Win
Arizona Diamondbacks catcher Gabriel Moreno hit his fourth home run of the postseason during Saturday's 9-1 win in Game 2 against the Texas Rangers. It was a solo homer for Moreno, coming in the fourth inning off of starter Jordan Montgomery. The 23-year-old Venezuelan had a fine regular season in Arizona with a .747 OPS but has shown more power in the playoffs, hitting to the tune of a .816 OPS. Before Game 3 of the NLCS, Moreno was batting fifth in the order for the Diamondbacks, since then he's been the three-hole hitter and has hit .276 in that time.

Thu Oct 19 202313:32Gabriel Moreno Hitting Third In Game 3 Of NLCS
Arizona Diamondbacks catcher Gabriel Moreno is behind the plate and batting third in the order in Game 3 of the National League Championship Series on Thursday against the Philadelphia Phillies and left-hander Ranger Suarez. Moreno will move up from the No. 5 spot in Arizona's batting order for this one after going 5-for-23 (.217) with three home runs, six RBI and three runs scored in his first seven postseason games entering Thursday's contest. The 23-year-old Venezuelan backstop hit .352 (38-for-108) with three of his seven regular-season home runs against left-handed pitchers. However, Moreno has never faced Suarez in his career. In the first two games of the NLCS, Moreno has gone 1-for-7 with a walk and two strikeouts.

Mon Oct 16 202315:38Gabriel Moreno Back In Game 1 Lineup For NLCS
Arizona Diamondbacks catcher Gabriel Moreno (hand, wrist) is back in the starting lineup for Game 1 of the National League Championship Series on Monday against the Philadelphia Phillies. He's doing the catching and batting fifth against Phillies right-hander Zack Wheeler. Moreno took a foul tip off his right hand/wrist in Game 3 of the NLDS against the Los Angeles Dodgers and was forced to the game, but he had plenty of time to heal up after the D-backs swept their division rivals in the five-game series. X-rays were negative and Moreno was able to take batting practice on Sunday. The 23-year-old Venezuelan backstop will look to stay hot in the postseason after clubbing three homers and driving in six in his first five playoff games. He's gone 0-for-3 in his career against Wheeler.

Thu Oct 12 202301:31Gabriel Moreno Leaves Game 3 Early, X-Rays Come Back Negative
Arizona Diamondbacks catcher Gabriel Moreno (hand) was forced to leave Game 3 of the National League Division Series against the Los Angeles Dodgers early on Wednesday after he was hit on the right hand with a foul tip in the fifth inning. However, X-rays came back negative and he was diagnosed with a right-hand contusion. The 23-year-old backstop will now have four days to rest up before the start of the Championship Series against either the Atlanta Braves or Philadelphia Phillies. Before leaving the game, Moreno went 1-for-2 with a solo home run (his third of the postseason) in the eventual 4-2 victory to sweep the division rivals in the NLDS. The young catcher has gone 4-for-16 with three homers, six RBI, five strikeouts and three runs scored in his first five career postseason games so far this October.

Thu Oct 5 202322:50Gabriel Moreno Will Return For NLDS Game 1
Arizona Diamondbacks catcher Gabriel Moreno (head) will be back behind the plate for Game 1 of the National League Division Series on Saturday against the Los Angeles Dodgers and left-hander Clayton Kershaw. Moreno took a backswing to the head while catching in the second inning on Wednesday in Game 2 of the wild-card series and was removed an inning later as a precaution. The 23-year-old backstop apparently has passed the league's concussion protocols and will be on the roster for the NLDS. It's great news for the D-backs as they look for a big upset over the division-rival Dodgers in the next series. Moreno is excellent defensively and hit a clutch go-ahead home run in the victory in Game 1 of the wild-card series on Tuesday. He hit .284 (97-for-341) on the season with seven homers, 50 RBI and six stolen bases in 111 games in his first full big-league campaign.

Wed Oct 4 202320:22Gabriel Moreno Leaves Game After Taking Backswing To The Head
Arizona Diamondbacks catcher Gabriel Moreno (head) was forced to leave Game 2 of the wild-card series on Wednesday against the Milwaukee Brewers after taking a backswing from infielder Brice Turang to the head while catching in the bottom of the second inning. Moreno was replaced behind the plate in the bottom of the third inning by backup Jose Herrera. The 23-year-old will be put through the league's concussion protocol, and it remains to be seen if he'll be available for a deciding Game 3 on Thursday if Milwaukee holds on to win Wednesday. If Arizona has to remove Moreno from the roster for a deciding Game 3, he wouldn't be available to play at all in the National League Division Series if the Snakes advance. Moreno struck out in his only plate appearance before leaving, but he hit a big go-ahead home run in the Game 1 victory on Tuesday.

Wed Aug 30 202319:29Gabriel Moreno Takes A Seat Wednesday
Arizona Diamondbacks catcher Gabriel Moreno is receiving the day off on Wednesday night versus the Los Angeles Dodgers. Moreno, the team's everyday backstop, is just getting a normal day of rest. Jose Herrera will catch rookie right-hander Brandon Pfaadt and will hit eighth against Dodgers right-hander Ryan Pepiot. The 23-year-old Moreno doesn't have much power (just six home runs), but he's hitting a strong .283 (76-for-269) in his first year in the desert and has gone an impressive 16-for-47 (.340) with three home runs, three doubles, a triple, 12 RBI and nine runs scored in 13 games (12 starts) since coming off the injured list on Aug. 13. Herrera is hitting only .213 (19-for-89) and is still searching for his first big-league homer in his 84th game on Wednesday.

Sat Aug 19 202313:28Gabriel Moreno Absent From The Lineup For First Game Of Doubleheader
Arizona Diamondbacks catcher Gabriel Moreno is not in the starting lineup for Game 1 of Saturday's doubleheader against the San Diego Padres. It sounds like Moreno will get the first game off as Jose Herrera starts behind the dish. The 23-year-old backstop should start Game 2 of the doubleheader, however. Moreno is batting .313/.313/563 with a double, a home run, and two RBI in the five games since he was activated from the injured list. He's an intriguing add in deeper leagues down the stretch.

Sun Aug 13 202313:14Gabriel Moreno Activated From The 10-Day IL
Arizona Diamondbacks catcher Gabriel Moreno (shoulder) has been activated from the 10-day injured list on Sunday. The 23-year-old catcher has been on the shelf since late July while dealing with left shoulder inflammation. He's compiled a .270/.316/.360 triple-slash line to go along with three home runs, 28 RBI, and four stolen bases over 222 at-bats this year. Veteran Carson Kelly was designated for assignment in a corresponding move. The D-Backs are going to give Moreno every opportunity to showcase his skills down the stretch.
