Mon Feb 518:51Zack Greinke Unlikely To Return To Royals
Free-agent right-hander Zack Greinke wants to return for a 21st season in 2024, according to two sources briefed on his thinking. However, the Kansas City Royals' signings of right-handers Seth Lugo and Michael Wacha almost certainly will preclude him from returning to the Royals. Greinke was 2-15 with a rough 5.06 ERA last year, but he's only 21 strikeouts shy of becoming only the 20th pitcher in major-league history to record 3,000 strikeouts. His Hall of Fame case likely won't be affected by whether he retires now or some point in the future. In addition to winning the 2009 American League Cy Young award, the 40-year-old has made six All-Star teams and earned six Gold Gloves. Greinke and Justin Verlander are the only active pitchers who have worked more than 3,000 innings.

Tue Dec 12 202315:54Zack Greinke Preparing To Pitch In 2024
Free-agent veteran right-hander Zack Greinke's representatives have communicated to major-league teams that he is preparing to pitch in 2024 and is open to contract talks. The 40-year-old former Cy Young winner and six-time All-Star doesn't have much left in the tank but wants to stick around for one more year. He had a rough year in 2023 with the Kansas City Royals, going 2-15 with a 5.06 ERA (4.74 FIP), 1.27 WHIP, 23 walks and only 97 strikeouts in 142 1/3 innings over his 30 appearances (27 starts). Greinke gets by with pinpoint control and relies on inducing weak contact since he's not blowing the ball anyone. With a strikeout percentage of just 16.4 last year, Greinke isn't going to be on the fantasy radar, regardless of where he signs. He will reach the 3,000-strikeout milestone in 2024, as he's only 21 strikeouts shy of the illustrious mark for pitchers.

Tue Nov 7 202323:17Zack Greinke Undecided On His Future
Free-agent right-hander Zack Greinke is still deciding on whether he will return for another season to pitch in 2024, according to Kansas City Royals general manager JJ Picollo. Greinke is now 40 years old and doesn't have much left in the tank, but he's 21 strikeouts away from 3,000 in his career and could decide to come back for his 21st MLB campaign in 2024 on a one-year deal somewhere. The six-time All-Star and former Cy Young winner in 2009 went 2-15 with the Royals in 30 outings (27 starts) in 2023, posting a 5.06 ERA (4.75 FIP) and 1.27 WHIP with 23 walks and just 97 strikeouts in 142 1/3 innings pitched. If Greinke does run it back for one more year in 2024, fantasy managers in standard-sized formats should be ignoring him.

Mon Aug 21 202320:59Zack Greinke Expected To Be Activated From Injured List On Tuesday
Kansas City Royals right-hander Zack Greinke (elbow) is expected to be activated from the injured list on Tuesday. Greinke landed on the injured list back on August 8 after coming down with soreness in his pitching elbow. The Royals are still deciding whether Greinke will get the start against the Oakland A's or if he will enter the game later as Angel Zerpa is currently listed as Tuesday's probable starter. Greinke has struggled this season, posting a 1-12 record, 5.53 ERA, and 73 strikeouts over 110 2/3 innings of work.

Sat Aug 19 202300:19Zack Greinke On Course For Return Next Week
Kansas City Royals starting pitcher Zack Greinke (elbow) is lined up to come off the injured list at some point next week, per manager Matt Quatraro. The 39-year-old recently threw a bullpen session in Arizona, and the Royals have come away satisfied with his progress thus far. Greinke hit the 15-day IL on Aug. 8 due to elbow soreness. It's the second time this year the veteran was sent to the IL after he was sidelined for two weeks during July with right shoulder tendinitis. Greinke shows a dull 5.53 ERA, 1.27 WHIP, and 73:15 K:BB in 110.2 innings this season. The soft-tossing right-hander may see some streaming scenarios for fantasy purposes down the stretch, but managers should not prioritize Greinke as a stash.

Tue Aug 8 202319:11Zack Greinke Back On the Injured List
The Kansas City Royals placed right-hander Zack Greinke (elbow) on the 15-day injured list (retroactive to Aug. 7) on Tuesday with right posterior elbow soreness and recalled left-hander Taylor Hearn from Triple-A Omaha in a corresponding move. Greinke doesn't have much left in the tank at this point in his 39-year-old body. There's really nothing left for fantasy managers to squeeze out of him on a bad Royals team. In his 22 starts in 2023, Greinke has gone 1-12 with a 5.53 ERA (5.14 FIP), 1.27 WHIP, 15 walks and only 73 strikeouts in 110 2/3 innings. He was roughed up in his last start on Sunday, allowing five earned runs on seven hits (two homers) while striking out four in four innings against the Philadelphia Phillies.

Thu Jul 20 202312:28Zack Greinke Activated And Starting Thursday
The Kansas City Royals activated right-hander Zack Greinke (shoulder) from the 15-day injured list on Thursday and optioned right-hander Max Castillo to Triple-A Omaha after Wednesday's game in a corresponding move. Greinke will make the start on Thursday against the visiting Detroit Tigers, and although it's a solid matchup, most fantasy managers shouldn't be looking to use Greinke as a streamer. The 39-year-old will return from right-shoulder tendinitis. He just hasn't been very effective this year with a 1-9 record, 5.44 ERA (4.95 FIP), 1.29 WHIP, 13 walks and 64 strikeouts in 92 2/3 innings covering 18 starts. Greinke can still eat innings, but he's just not missing many bats anymore at this point in his career.

Mon Jul 17 202319:23Zack Greinke Trending Towards Thursday Return
Kansas City Royals right-hander Zack Greinke (shoulder) recently threw a side session and is trending towards making a start for the Royals on Thursday against the Detroit Tigers. Greinke is eligible to return from the injured list on Thursday after landing on it with right-shoulder tendinitis before the All-Star break. The 39-year-old veteran is nearing the end of the line on a fantastic career, but he just hasn't been very competitive on the mound or worth rostering in mixed fantasy leagues in 2023. He's made 18 starts and is currently 1-9 with a 5.44 ERA (4.95 FIP), 1.29 WHIP, 13 walks and only 64 strikeouts in 92 2/3 innings pitched. Stay away from the six-time All-Star if he faces the Tigers on Thursday.

Wed Jul 5 202316:26Royals Place Zack Greinke On 15-Day Injured List
The Kansas City Royals placed right-hander Zack Greinke (shoulder) on the 15-day injured list on Wednesday with right-shoulder tendonitis and recalled right-hander Dylan Coleman from Triple-A Omaha in a corresponding move. Greinke was forced to exit his start early on Tuesday against the Minnesota Twins and now won't be able to return until July 20. The 39-year-old former Cy Young winner is nearing the end of his career and hasn't been very effective in 2023, going 1-9 with a 5.44 ERA (4.96 FIP), 1.29 WHIP, 13 walks and only 64 strikeouts in 92 2/3 innings over 18 starts. He's allowed 19 runs on 35 hits (six homers) while walking four and striking out 10 in 21 innings in his last four starts. Greinke shouldn't be rostered in mixed leagues at this point in his career.

Tue Jul 4 202317:14Zack Greinke Leaves Start Early With Shoulder Injury
Kansas City Royals right-hander Zack Greinke (shoulder) left his start early on Tuesday against the Minnesota Twins in the sixth inning with right-shoulder discomfort. Greinke took his ninth loss of the year in 5 1/3 innings pitched before departing, allowing six runs on seven hits (three homers surrendered) while walking none and striking out three to raise his season ERA to 5.44. Manager Matt Quatraro said that Greinke's shoulder injury was mild, which is good news, and the 39-year-old could avoid the injured list entirely with the All-Star break coming up next week. Greinke has been tough to rely on for fantasy purposes at this stage of his career in KC. He's now 1-9 on the year with a 5.44 ERA and weak strikeout rate.

Tue May 30 202323:35Zack Greinke Puts Bow On Spry-Looking May
Kansas City Royals starting pitcher Zack Greinke tossed five scoreless innings of two-hit ball and matched a season-high with six strikeouts against the St. Louis Cardinals on Tuesday. The 39-year-old settled for a no-decision in a 2-1 defeat. Greinke improved his ERA to 4.19 and WHIP to 1.14 this year. The right-hander's soft stuff sometimes gets him hit very hard, but the former Cy Young award winner let in two runs or fewer in five of six starts in May for a 2.30 ERA in the month. Next Tuesday, Greinke visits the Miami Marlins, a team he is undefeated against (7-0) with a 3.06 ERA in twelve career starts. The Fish are the only team the 20-year veteran has never taken a loss from in his illustrious career.

Sat May 13 202309:38Zack Greinke Unlikely To Find Fountain Of Youth Against Brewers
Kansas City Royals starting pitcher Zack Greinke toes the rubber against the Milwaukee Brewers on Saturday. The 39-year-old presents an uninspiring 5.13 ERA in his 20th campaign, but a respectable 1.32 WHIP serves as the saving grace for his fantasy value. The six-time all-star's annually-low walk rate may entice desperate fantasy managers into streaming Greinke, but he holds a 1-5 record across 55 career innings against Milwaukee. The soft hurler owns a seemingly passable 4.09 ERA in 10 career appearances opposing them, except that all of these outings came during the former Cy Young winner's prime between 2007 and 2019. Greinke may be a future Hall-of-Famer, but he's not much of a fantasy option at the twilight stage of his illustrious career.

Mon Jan 30 202314:51Royals Re-Sign Zack Greinke
The Kansas City Royals are reportedly re-signing veteran starting pitcher Zack Greinke, per a tweet from Bob Fescoe of 610 Sports in Kansas City on Monday morning. Fescoe tweeted the following: "Royals have reached a deal to bring Zack Greinke back for one more year, per source. Deal will be officially announced tomorrow afternoon. #royals." The 39-year-old made his return to Kansas City this past season, making 26 starts. In those 26 starts, the right-hander pitched to a 3.68 ERA, a 4.03 FIP, 73 strikeouts, and just 27 walks allowed in 137 innings of work. Kansas City's other rotation options include the likes of Jordan Lyles, Brady Singer, Ryan Yarbrough, and Brad Keller.

Tue Jan 17 202316:37Royals Still Willing To Re-Sign Zack Greinke
Although the Kansas City Royals don't necessarily need veteran starting pitcher Zack Greinke in 2023, they remain interested in re-signing him. The potential Hall of Famer will probably need to accept a low base salary that could grow with incentives based on innings pitched if he wants to return to KC, according to sources familiar with the team's thinking. The Royals remain open to the idea, even if it would leave fewer innings for their young arms. The 39-year-old means a lot to the organization, which drafted him sixth overall in 2002. Greinke had a 3.68 ERA in 137 innings in his return to the Royals last year, but the soft-tosser with a low strikeout rate won't be very attractive in fantasy, no matter where he signs.

Tue Dec 20 202216:26Royals Still Interested In Zack Greinke
The Kansas City Royals remain interested in rotation help and re-signing Zack Greinke. The Royals added right-hander Jordan Lyles to a two-year, $17 million deal on Tuesday, but apparently they are not done adding to their rotation this offseason. Unlike Lyles, Greinke has actually been pretty good in his career, winning a Cy Young award in 2009 and making the All-Star team six times. The 39-year-old is nearing the end, but he was still decent in 2022 with the Royals, going 4-9 with a 3.68 ERA (4.03 FIP), a 1.34 WHIP and a 12.5 percent strikeout rate in 137 innings and 26 starts. The soft-tossing Greinke has been pretty durable and would be another nice innings-eater for the rebuilding Royals. For fantasy purposes, Greinke has become a low-strikeout, low-upside streamer in deeper leagues.

Fri Nov 4 202219:17Zack Greinke Expected To Return With Royals
Kansas City Royals starting pitcher Zack Greinke is expected to return to pitch another season in 2023 with the team. Greinke's days of being interesting in fantasy are pretty much gone, but he did have a respectable 3.68 ERA (4.03 FIP) and a 1.34 WHIP in 137 innings pitched over 26 starts in his return to the Royals in 2022. However, the seven-time All-Star's 12.5 percent strikeout rate just leaves too much to be desired from a fantasy perspective, albeit with a rebuilding organization. Greinke is still relevant as a real-life veteran inning's eater for the Royals, but there's pretty much zero upside from a fantasy perspective. The 39-year-old right-hander is 118 strikeouts from reaching 3,000 in his Hall of Fame career.

Wed Sep 28 202200:44Zack Greinke Throws Seven Shutout Frames
Kansas City Royals starting pitcher Zack Greinke was at his best Tuesday, throwing seven shutout innings in a 4-3 loss to the Detroit Tigers. He allowed four hits and one walk while striking out two. Fantasy managers have come to expect this type of outing from Greinke, solid innings with limited strikeout upside. He has a 4-9 record with a 3.98 ERA, 1.35 WHIP, and 72 strikeouts in 131 innings this year. The lack of whiffs make him hard to roster, but the 38-year-old continues to get the job done on the field.

Mon Sep 5 202219:04Zack Greinke To Return And Start On Wednesday
Kansas City Royals manager Mike Matheny said that starting pitcher Zack Greinke (forearm) will return from the injured list on Wednesday to start against the Cleveland Guardians. Greinke has been on the shelf since late August with a right forearm injury, but he'll be available once again for fantasy managers in deeper leagues on Wednesday. The 38-year-old right-hander doesn't have a ton of upside left in his right arm, and he'll be extra risky on Wednesday without having made a minor league rehab start. Greinke has an ERA under 3.00 in six starts since the All-Star break, but overall he's 4-8 with a 4.14 ERA (4.27 FIP), a 1.35 WHIP, 64 strikeouts and 21 walks in 108 2/3 innings pitched over his 21 starts in his first year back in KC.

Wed Aug 24 202219:05Royals Send Zack Greinke To The Injured List
The Kansas City Royals placed right-hander Zack Greinke (forearm) on the 15-day injured list with right forearm tightness on Wednesday and recalled right-hander Collin Snider from Triple-A Omaha in a corresponding move. The Royals also placed right-hander Josh Staumont (biceps) on the 15-day IL and recalled left-hander Anthony Misiewicz from Omaha. Greinke's IL stint is retroactive to Aug. 21. The 38-year-old Greinke will miss a couple turns through the rotation. At this point in his career on a rebuilding Royals club, Greinke doesn't have much fantasy appeal with his career-low 13.7 percent strikeout rate. He's gone 4-8 with a 4.14 ERA (4.28 FIP), 1.35 WHIP, 64 strikeouts and 21 walks in 108 2/3 innings over 21 starts.

Tue Aug 2 202211:28Royals Won't Trade Zack Greinke
Kansas City Royals future Hall of Famer Zack Greinke could probably help a contending team this year, but the Royals have decided not to deal him. The rebuilding Royals will keep the 38-year-old veteran around to close out the 2022 season. In 17 starts (87 2/3 innings), Greinke has gone 3-6 with a 4.41 ERA, 1.30 WHIP, 50 strikeouts and 18 walks. He still has pinpoint control with his pitches, but a career-low 13.4 percent strikeout rate has made Greinke pretty much useless in fantasy towards the end of his career. He would've been a bit more intriguing if pitching for a contender the rest of the way, but it looks like that won't be happening.
