In a time when other NPB clubs were signing top Cuban talent, Mejia was kind of an under-the-radar signing, but he wound up leading the Pacific League in home runs with 34.
Mejia has already signed a big extension for 2015, so no need to worry about him for next year. Another big year in 2015 could draw the attention of MLB clubs though.

Braves released 1B Ernesto Mejia.
Mejia has been granted his release from the Braves, and he'll head overseas to join the Seibu Lions in Japan's Pacific League. The 28-year-old was off to a blistering start at Triple-A Gwinnett, slashing .354/.420/.684 with seven homers and 24 RBI in his first 20 games.

No surprises here. Mejia has a chance to make his major league debut at some point this season, but the Braves will use Chris Johnson as Freddie Freeman's backup at first base.

Braves re-signed 1B Ernesto Mejia to a minor league contract.
He'll also receive an invite to spring training. Mejia enjoyed a monster season with Double-A Mississippi in 2011, but turns 26 in December and strikes out much too often to think he could be successful against big-league pitching.
