Herrera has been granted his release in order to play in Japan this season.
Herrera was non-tendered at the beginning of December but was then re-signed to a minor league deal the following day. Rather than attempt to crack the Opening Day roster in spring training, however, Herrera will take his talents to Japan in search of greener pastures. The 33-year-old Cuba native appeared in 20 games for the Angels last season, posting a 2.70 ERA across 16.2 total innings.

Herrera signed a minor league contract with the Angels on Wednesday that includes an invite to spring training, Alden Gonzalez of MLB.com reports.
The Angels non-tendered Herrera prior to Tuesday's deadline, but will welcome the right-hander back on a minor league deal. Herrera averaged 8.5 K/9 in 41 appearances with Triple-A Salt Lake last season, but walked nine in 16.2 innings with the big club and will need to limit the free passes during Cactus League play in order to earn a spot on the Opening Day roster.
