Wed Feb 26 201417:04Carl Pavano retires from baseball at age 38
Carl Pavano has retired from professional baseball.
Pavano's agent shared that news Wednesday with Jeff Todd of MLB Trade Rumors. "Despite my strong desire to compete and hard work in preparing for the upcoming season," the 38-year-old right-hander said in a statement, "I feel that the amount of time lost from my spleen injury, coupled with the recovery from my complications from that injury, preclude me from continuing to compete at my highest level, which is necessary to perform in the major leagues." He registered a 4.39 career ERA in 14 big league seasons.

Tue Feb 11 201419:03Carl Pavano to throw off mound soon
Chris Cotillo of MLBDailyDish.com reports that Carl Pavano (spleen) "feels good" and should begin throwing off mound in the next week or so.
He'll then audition for teams shortly after that if all goes well. Pavano turned 38 last month and missed the entire 2013 season after suffering a ruptured spleen, but he's not ready to give up on his career.

Sun Jan 19 201411:32'Lot of teams' monitoring Carl Pavano
Chris Cotillo of MLBDailyDish.com reports that there are a "lot of teams" monitoring the progress of Carl Pavano.
Pavano missed the entire 2013 season after suffering a ruptured spleen, but he's resumed throwing on flat ground and will audition for teams off the mound next month. The 37-year-old right-hander posted a 6.00 ERA, 1.40 WHIP and 33/8 K/BB ratio in 63 innings in 2012, but someone will surely be willing to offer him a minor league deal if his throwing session goes alright.

Thu Jan 16 201414:40Pavano working out in AZ, close to throwing
Carl Pavano is working out in Arizona and about three weeks from beginning to throw off a mound.
Pavano struggled mightily in 2012 with the Twins and then missed the entire 2013 season after suffering a ruptured spleen. He's likely to host a showcase for teams sometime in February and should be able to find a non-guaranteed minor league contract by the spring.

Sun Dec 29 201321:34Pavano building arm strength for comeback
Chris Cotillo of MLB Daily Dish reports that Carl Pavano had continued to throw, building up arm strength for his potential comeback attempt.
Cotillo notes that Pavano could host a showcase for interested teams at some point this winter. The 37-year-old right-hander made 11 mostly ineffective starts for the Twins in 2012, posting a 6.00 ERA, 1.40 WHIP and 33/8 K/BB ratio in 63 innings, then missed the entire 2013 season after suffering a ruptured spleen. He'll have to settle for a minor league deal, but could be worth a look for pitching-starved teams as a low-risk option.

Fri Dec 6 201312:08Carl Pavano trying to pitch in 2014
Carl Pavano is healthy and hoping to pitch for someone next season.
Pavano missed all of the 2013 campaign after suffering a ruptured spleen that almost killed him, but he was cleared about six months ago to resume regular activities. The righty will turn 38 in January and posted a 6.00 ERA in his last season, though he was pitching through a strained shoulder and a bruised humerus bone in his throwing arm. Pavano will have to settle for a minor league deal.

Thu May 30 201316:41Pavano (spleen) aiming for return in 2014
Carl Pavano's agent, Dave Pepe, told Jon Heyman of CBS Sports that his client is aiming to return next season.
Pavano fell while shoveling snow in his driveway in January and ended up needing his spleen removed. "Carl will not be physically able to play this year as he recovers from his spleen removal and the complications that followed," Pepe told Heyman via text message. "His hope is that he can give it a try next year." Pavano had a 6.00 ERA in 11 starts with the Twins in 2012 and turns 38 next January. Assuming he's physically able, he will almost certainly have to accept a minor league deal.

Thu Jan 24 201321:09Pavano out 6-8 weeks after rupturing spleen
FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal reports that Carl Pavano will be sidelined 6-8 weeks after suffering a ruptured spleen when he slipped and fell while shoveling snow on his driveway.
Well, that sounds about right for the oft-injured right-hander. Pavano had been set to sign somewhere soon to compete for a rotation spot, but teams will likely wait until he's healthy now. The Rockies and Mets were among the clubs that had shown interest in the veteran. Pavano is coming off a 2012 season where he posted a 6.00 ERA and dealt with shoulder issues.

Thu Jan 24 201315:06Rockies 'out' on right-hander Carl Pavano
According to Troy Renck of the Denver Post, the Rockies are "out" on free agent Carl Pavano.
Renck suggests that the Mets and Marlins might be potential destinations for the veteran right-hander, who posted a 6.00 ERA and 1.40 WHIP in 11 starts last season with the Twins. It's quite possible that he will have to settle for a non-guaranteed minor league contract.

Sun Jan 20 201323:23Rockies to aggressively pursue Pavano, Lowe
Troy Renck of the Denver Post writes that the Rockies are aggressively pursuing free agents Carl Pavano and Derek Lowe.
Even after signing Chris Volstad, the Rockies are looking to add another veteran pitcher to their starting rotation mix. Pavano has received interest from as many as five teams this offseason, but has yet to receive any offers. Despite posting a 5.11 ERA and 1.62 WHIP in 142 2/3 innings between the Indians and Yankees this past season, Lowe is holding out for a guaranteed job as a starter.

Mon Jan 7 201314:03Mets and Carl Pavano have 'mutual interest'
According to Andy McCullough of the Newark Star-Ledger, the Mets and Carl Pavano have "mutual interest."
Pavano's agent clarified to McCullough that negotiations are still "very preliminary," but it sounds like there could be a marriage here. Pavano posted an ugly 6.00 ERA in 11 starts last season for the Twins while fighting right shoulder issues. So he should came rather cheap.

Wed Dec 5 201211:41Five teams interested in Carl Pavano
Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe reports that five teams are interested in free agent right-hander Carl Pavano.
Pavano's agent, Dave Pepe, said that the Red Sox have "checked in," though that doesn't necessarily mean anything. Pepe reportedly spoke with the Marlins on Tuesday, but the club "didn't seem enthusiastic" about working out a deal. Pavano posted a 6.00 ERA over 11 starts this past season while dealing with a nagging shoulder issue and may struggle to find a guaranteed major league deal.

Sun Nov 18 201210:06Carl Pavano getting some interest
Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe writes that Carl Pavano's agent, Dave Pepe, has "received a few preliminary calls" on his client.
Pavano was limited to just 11 starts this season due to shoulder issues, but Cafardo says he was "given a clean bill of health in September." If he is indeed healthy, the veteran right-hander wouldn't be a bad gamble on a modest one-year deal. He might have to settle for a non-guaranteed contract.

Tue Aug 21 201216:24Pavano (shoulder) shut down for rest of 2012
Carl Pavano (shoulder) has been shut down for 2012.
An MRI and examination by specialist Dr. David Altchek on Tuesday in New York revealed a bruise on Pavano's humerus bone. "The good news is, it doesn't require surgery," said the veteran right-hander. "But as far as I'm concerned, this whole season has been a failure on many levels, for myself, for the team." He posted a 6.00 ERA and 1.40 WHIP in 63 innings (11 starts).

Fri Aug 17 201212:30Carl Pavano's velocity down
Carl Pavano (shoulder) was clocked only at 85-86 mph during his rehab start with High-A Fort Myers Thursday.
It's not far off from what Pavano was throwing earlier this season for the Twins, when his average fastball was clocked at 86.8 mph, according to Fangraphs.com. But, the right-hander admitted that he would "like to see the velocity come back a little more." The good news is that Pavano threw three scoreless innings and his shoulder feels much better, though he concedes that he's "dealing with it just being a little dead, where it's just not coming alive as quick as I'd like to." Pavano will throw another rehab game Tuesday and remains hopeful of rejoining the Twins' rotation later this month.

Carl Pavano (shoulder) threw live batting practice again Thursday but is not ready to pitch in a game.
The Twins had been hoping the veteran right-hander would be ready to begin a rehab assignment Thursday. It shouldn't be long if he can avoid a setback, though he figures to need a handful of rehab starts given that he's been out two months.

Carl Pavano (shoulder) is headed to the Twins' spring training complex in Florida to continue his rehab.
Pavano has thrown a couple bullpen sessions without issue. He'll throw another one Saturday before throwing live batting practice next Monday. A rehab assignment should be in the offing soon after that, putting him on track to return sometime in August if all goes well.
