Fri May 7 202120:55Angels boost catching depth, acquire Drew Butera from Texas
ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — The Los Angeles Angels have acquired catcher Drew Butera from Texas in exchange for cash considerations. The Angels also designated catcher Jack Kruger for assignment Friday. The 37-year-old Butera will back up Kurt Suzuki in Anaheim while catchers Max Stassi and Anthony Bemboom are sidelined by injuries. Stassi went on the injured list Thursday with an apparent concussion after hitting his head on a stanchion while chasing a foul ball two days earlier. Bemboom has back problems that are preventing him from playing, manager Joe Maddon said Friday. Butera appeared in 10 games for the Angels in 2015 before he was traded to Kansas City, where he won a World Series ring. A career .198 hitter and a strong defensive catcher, Butera has been behind the plate for two no-hitters in a 12-year major league career with five teams. ___ More AP MLB: https://apnews.com/hub/MLB and https://twitter.com/AP_Sports
Sat Apr 10 202118:04Catching No-Nos: Padres' Caratini an MLB 1st with 2nd in row
ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Victor Caratini is a no-no catcher. When hometown pitcher Joe Musgrove threw the first no-hitter for the San Diego Padres in their franchise history, Caratini became the first MLB catcher to be behind the plate for consecutive no-hitters in the league for different teams. “He was the first one to embrace me,” Musgrove said of Caratini. “And it just felt good. I know he wanted that as bad as I did.” While Musgrove had never thrown a no-hitter at any level, Caratini was on the receiving end last Sept. 13 when Alec Mills threw one for the Chicago Cubs at Milwaukee. The offseason acquisitions by the Padres got one together Friday night in a 3-0 win against the Rangers in Texas. “Just super happy. I think it’s pretty rare to find yourself in those situations,” Caratini said Saturday through a translator. “Joe had everything working, had all of his pitches working. It’s really awesome. Really happy to be a part of it, really happy for him, and really happy for the team... [More]

Wed Jan 13 202115:27Rangers sign P Anderson, C Butera to minor league deals
ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — The Texas Rangers have signed right-handed pitcher Justin Anderson and veteran catcher Drew Butera to minor league contracts that include invitations to major league spring training. Butera got a one-year deal that will be worth $1 million if he is on the big league roster after he played the past two-plus seasons with Colorado. The 37-year-old catcher has played 541 games for five teams over the past 11 seasons. He caught the final out of Kansas City’s World Series championship in 2015 when he was teammates with new Rangers general manager Chris Young. The 28-year-old Anderson, who is recovering from Tommy John surgery last July, got a two-year minor league deal that would be worth $850,000 in the majors. Anderson’s elbow ligament replacement surgery was performed by Rangers team physician Dr. Keith Meister. He suffered the injury while pitching an intrasquad game for the Los Angeles Angels last summer. Anderson, a Texas native, made 111 career relief appearances for the Angels from 2018-19, going 6-3 with a 4.75 ERA and five saves while averaging 11.2 strikeouts per nine innings. ___ More AP MLB: https://apnews.com/MLB and https://twitter.com/AP_Sports

Wed Sep 2 202001:28Chapman's 1st save seals Yankees' 5-3 win over Tampa Bay
NEW YORK (AP) — Yankees closer Aroldis Chapman threw a 101 mph fastball near the head of pinch-hitter Michael Brosseau while closing out his first save of the season, prompting the benches to empty after New York ended a six-game losing streak against the Tampa Bay Rays with a 5-3 victory Tuesday night.Chapman’s first pitch to Brosseau with two outs in the ninth inning whizzed past Brosseau’s head, and umpires met before issuing warnings to both benches amid a budding rivalry that’s been dominated this season by Tampa Bay. Chapman struck out Brosseau to end it, and Brosseau began walking toward the visiting dugout before turning back to exchange words with someone on the Yankees. The dugouts and benches emptied and players gathered near home plate, but they mostly kept their distance before dispersing to their respective clubhouses.DJ LeMahieu homered twice, and Gio Urshela hit a tiebreaking, three-run Little League homer in the sixth inning as New York beat the Rays at Yankee Stadium for...
