(AP) — Texas Rangers shortstop Elvis Andrus prepared for the first full-squad workout at a different locker than in past springs.Now 30 and going into his 11th season, Andrus is in a much different place than just his spot in the clubhouse.With star third baseman Adrian Beltre now retired, Andrus will be assuming a bigger leadership role on a team with a lot of 20-something position players in the lineup with him."It's something as a player, when you get more years and more experience, you're looking forward," Andrus said Monday. (AP) — Speedy outfielder Ben Revere is in spring training with the Texas Rangers after signing a Triple-A contract.Revere was with the Rangers for their first full-squad workout Monday after completing a successful physical. The 30-year-old left-handed hitter last played in the majors with the Los Angeles Angels in 2017, when he hit .275 with 21 stolen bases in 109 games.He is a .284 career hitter with 211 stolen bases for five teams over eight big league seasons.There are certainly no guarantees for Revere with the Rangers, who have young outfielders Joey Gallo, Nomar Mazara, Delino DeShields and Willie Calhoun. Veteran Hunter Pence is also in camp on a minor league deal.Cincinnati released Revere at the end of spring training last year. The outfield used to be a prime destination for the fantasy needs of every baseball shopper. Times have changed.Other positions are more fruitful and stolen bases are more valuable than ever because they're not as readily available.In 2017, outfielders accounted for 38 percent of all plate appearance in Major League Baseball, and accordingly represented 38.9 percent of home runs and 37.9 percent of all RBIs. Looking at other standard categories, outfielders accounted for 41 percent of runs scored and 54.9 percent of stolen bases. They hit an average of .260 versus the typical .255 batting average. They were even better with on-base percentage, earning a .332 mark compared to baseball's average OBP of .324.Combine those numbers with the reality that HRs overall are up 45.8 percent since 2014, and RBIs increased by just 15 percent - but stolen bases are down 29.8 percent from their peak this decade.The takeaway: You can get power anywhere, but steals are at a premium and the outfield is a...
