Schilling was third behind Derek Jeter and Larry Walker with 278 of 397 votes last year, finishing at 70% and 20 votes shy in balloting by the Baseball Writers’ Association of America. Clemens had 242 votes for 61% and Bonds 241 for 60.7%, both well short of the 75% needed, which was 298 votes last year. Both were overwhelming favorites before suspicions of steroids use. Clemens has denied using performance-enhancing drugs, and Bonds says he never knowingly took performance-enhancing drugs. All three will be making their ninth appearance on the BBWAA ballot this year, one short of the limit. Omar Vizquel was next in last year's voting with 209 ballots for 52.6%. Pitchers Barry Zito, Tim Hudson, Mark Buehrle and A.J. Burnett, and outfielder Torii Hunter are among the top newcomers on the ballot announced... [More]

Mon Sep 23 201922:41Injured Yelich still in the hunt for batting title
The Milwaukee Brewers are charging toward a playoff spot without Christian Yelich. And even while injured, Yelich is inching closer to a nice individual honor.Yelich is currently the National League's batting leader, although he's out with a fractured kneecap and can only watch as his team chases a postseason berth. The batting race may not be foremost on his mind, but that's coming down to the wire too — with Yelich's .329 average holding the lead.Ketel Marte is also batting .329, but he's been shut down for the season with back problems. With an additional decimal place, his average of .3286 trails Yelich's .3292. Mon Feb 26 201819:19Adding Addison: Signing Reed gives Twins big bullpen boost
FORT MYERS, Fla. (AP) — The Minnesota Twins signed Fernando Rodney to be their closer, bringing his 300 career saves to a bullpen that's needed a boost for several seasons. In an age when ninth-inning use isn't necessarily for a team's best reliever anymore, Addison Reed might have been the more valuable addition."There's no question he wants to find his way into the biggest situations of the game that lead you to your closer," Twins manager Paul Molitor said. "He knows it might not always be the eighth inning. He's more than open to do it. He's got a nice resume which includes a fair amount of saves, and he's more than capable, but to hear him talk about how important those things are to him is more than refreshing."The last four World Series participants, starting with defending champion Houston last fall, have provided a prime-time snapshot of the importance of having multiple hard throwers capable of commanding high-leverage situations once the starting pitcher is removed. That can start... [More]

OF/1B Michael Cuddyer seemed to age 10 years this season, during which he battled a knee injury before hitting .151 with 16 strikeouts in his final 53 at-bats. He can still provide value as a right-handed-hitting platoon partner at first base and/or left field as well as in the clubhouse as a terrific mentor, but $12.5 million is an awfully expensive price to pay for that, Moving him likely would require taking on someone else's bad contract.
