ATLANTA (AP) — The Atlanta Braves acquired catcher Kevan Smith from the Tampa Bay Rays for cash on Wednesday and designated catcher Jeff Mathis for assignment. Smith, 32, was designated for assignment by the Rays on Sunday. He was 1 for 4 in only three games with the Rays this season. Smith has a .271 career batting average in six seasons with the Chicago White Sox, the Angels and the Rays. Mathis, 38, was 0 for 9 with five strikeouts in three games with Atlanta. The Braves also optioned left-hander Tucker Davidson to Triple-A Gwinnett and activated left-hander Grant Dayton from the 10-day injured list. Davidson allowed three runs in six innings against the New York Mets on Tuesday night in his 2021 debut Dayton will be active for Wednesday night's game against the Mets after recovering from a thigh inflammation. ___ More AP MLB: https://apnews.com/hub/MLB and https://twitter.com/AP_Sports
Sat May 15 202120:48LEADING OFF: Pujols joins Dodgers, Bieber faces Kelenic, M's
A look at what's happening around the majors on Sunday: ___ DODGEBALL Albert Pujols didn’t have to travel far to find a new opportunity -- released by the Angels, the 41-year-old slugger has reached a deal up the freeway with the Los Angeles Dodgers. Pujols is expected to finalize the agreement Monday. The oldest player in the majors batted .198 this season with five homers and 12 RBIs for the Angels. The three-time NL MVP is fifth in major league history with 667 career homers and 13th with 3,253 hits. Pujols left Anaheim hoping to play every day for another team, but that might be tough with the World Series champions. The Dodgers have veteran Max Muncy as their regular first baseman and also former NL MVP Cody Bellinger, who’s been out with a leg injury. The Dodgers, however, have not hit well against left-handed pitching and hope the righty-swinging Pujols can provide some pop. Pujols is making $30 million this year, and the Dodgers will pay him only the pro-rated portion of the major... [More]
Fri May 14 202119:27Veteran catcher Tyler Flowers retires at age of 35
MILWAUKEE (AP) — Veteran catcher Tyler Flowers has retired a week after signing a minor league contract with the Atlanta Braves. MLB.com first reported Flowers’ decision and noted that he hurt his back last weekend. Braves manager Brian Snitker confirmed Flowers’ retirement while speaking to reporters before their game Friday with the Milwaukee Brewers. Flowers, 35, played for the Braves from 2016-20 after spending seven seasons with the Chicago White Sox. “You don’t appreciate guys like that enough until you don’t have him,” Snitker said. “I just think the presence that he had in the clubhouse, the stability that he added, the professionalism. He had a really, really strong, good career. He’s just a wonderful person, carried himself as a pro all the time. It’s a really good career — a really good career. Hopefully he stays around and helps us out.” Flowers had signed a minor league deal after Braves catcher Travis d'Arnaud hurt his thumb applying a tag at the plate in a game against the... [More]
Sun May 2 202117:33Braves put catchers Travis d'Arnaud, Alex Jackson on IL
DUNEDIN, Fla. (AP) — The Atlanta Braves put catchers Travis d’Arnaud and Alex Jackson on the injured list Sunday. D’Arnaud was placed on the 60-day IL with a torn ligament in his left thumb after getting hurt on a tag play at the plate in the sixth inning of Saturday night's game against Toronto. Atlanta manager Brian Snitker said after the Braves lost 7-2 to Toronto that d’Arnaud is being set for surgery sometime in the next few days. Snitker expects d’Arnaud to return before the season ends. Jackson, who replaced d’Arnaud in the game, went on the 10-day IL with a strained left hamstring. Catcher William Contreras was recalled from the Braves' alternate site and started Sunday against the Blue Jays. Catcher Jeff Mathis had his contract purchased from alternate site. D’Arnaud has a .220 batting average with two homers and 11 RBIs in 23 games. Jackson was 1 for 23 (.043) in 10 games. Contreras, 23, made his major league debut last season, going 4 for 10 in four games. He was the 27th man for Atlanta's doubleheader on April 25 against Arizona. Mathis, 38, spent the previous two seasons with Texas. The 16-year veteran known for his defense has a career .194 batting average in 945 games. ___ More AP MLB: https://apnews.com/hub/MLB and https://twitter.com/AP_Sports

Fri Mar 26 202115:14Veteran pitchers Nova, Rondn, catcher Mathis cut by Phils
CLEARWATER, Fla. (AP) — Pitchers Iván Nova and Héctor Rondón have been released from minor league contracts by the Philadelphia Phillies along with catcher Jeff Mathis. Philadelphia still had to make decisions on whether to add right-hander Brandon Kintzler, left-hander Tony Watson and outfielder Matt Joyce to the major league roster. Nova, a 34-year-old right-hander, had a 7.30 ERA in five spring training appearances. He allowed 10 runs and 15 hits in 12 1/3 innings with nine walks and six strikeouts. He would have received a one-year contract paying $1.5 million while in the major leagues. Rondón, a 33-year-old righty, had a 7.71 ERA in eight spring training games. He gave up seven runs — six earned — and eight hits in seven innings with two walks and eight strikeouts. He also would have received a contract paying $1.5 million while in the major leagues. J.T. Realmuto flashed a slight smile and shared encouraging words for fans reeling from news about Carson Wentz’s trade and his thumb injury. “Hang in there,” Realmuto said. “I can’t speak too much on the Carson situation but I’m not very worried about my thumb, so if I was a Phillies fan, I wouldn’t be too worried.” The Philadelphia Phillies' two-time All-Star catcher found out Thursday that he has a small fracture in his right thumb and will be evaluated again in two weeks. Tue Feb 16 202114:11Phillies invite Odubel Herrera to camp, sign Jeff Mathis
PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Former All-Star center fielder Odubel Herrera was among 31 non-roster players the Philadelphia Phillies have invited to spring training. Herrera, who will earn $10 million this season, hasn’t played for the Phillies since 2019 when he was suspended under Major League Baseball’s domestic violence policy. The charges against Herrera were dismissed but he was removed from the team’s 40-man roster last year and wasn’t part of the 60-player pool for the shortened season. He will report to the team’s minor league mini-camp. Catcher Jeff Mathis signed a minor league deal with the Phillies on Tuesday and will join the major league camp. Mathis batted .161 in 24 games for Texas last season. Other non-roster players invited to major league spring training include: pitchers Neftalí Feliz, Brandon Kintzler, Bryan Mitchell, Iván Nova, Héctor Rondón and Michael Ynoa; catchers Christian Bethancourt and Rodolfo Durán; infielder Ronald Torreyes and outfielders Travis Jankowski and Matt Joyce. ___ More AP MLB: https://apnews.com/MLB and https://twitter.com/AP_Sports¶
