Sat Feb 16 201920:42Rockies relievers ready for strong bullpen minus Ottavino
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. (AP) — The Colorado Rockies will be without the reliever who boasted he could strike out Babe Ruth, but they believe the bridge between their solid starting rotation and premier closer Wade Davis remains sturdy.Colorado is counting on a veteran bullpen group that includes Scott Oberg, Seunghwan Oh, Chris Rusin and Bryan Shaw to step up the way Adam Ottavino did in 2018, when his career year with the Rockies led to a three-year, $27 million free agent deal with the New York Yankees."I think we have a lot of good arms and a lot of talented guys back there," catcher Chris Iannetta said."I think we can piece it together and be really good. Guys have good years. Guys have bad years. I don't think anyone expected Adam to have the year that he had last year after the previous year. It happens all the time."Oberg had a strong second half last season, Oh pitched well after being acquired at the trade deadline and the Rockies are counting on a return to normalcy by Shaw, Rusin,... DENVER (AP) — Colorado Rockies left-handed reliever Mike Dunn says he is planning on having season-ending shoulder surgery.Dunn has been on the disabled list since July 7 with discomfort in the AC joint. He's anticipating surgery possibly as soon as next week and expects to be sidelined between six to eight weeks. The 33-year-old Dunn said he's at peace with his decision for a procedure because, "ultimately, I gave it everything I could to be back, but it just didn't hold up."Dunn appeared in 25 games this season and had a 9.00 ERA over 17 innings.___More AP MLB: https://apnews.com/tag/MLB and https://twitter.com/AP_Sports

LHP Mike Dunn made his 500th career appearance Monday when he came on in the ninth and got Derek Dietrich, the only batter he faced, to pop out to end the inning with runners at first and third. Dunn spent six seasons with the Marlins before signing a three-year, $19 million contract as a free agent last winter with the Rockies -- the largest contract they have ever given a reliever. In a team-leading 66 appearances, Dunn has pitched 49 innings and is 5-1 with a 4.69 ERA. He has inherited 36 runners and has allowed nine to score.

LHP Mike Dunn gave up two walks and two hits in one-third of an inning. Dunn also gave up two runs on Friday when he allowed PH Daniel Descalso's three-run homer. The past two outings raised Dunn's ERA from 4.17 to 4.89.

LHP Mike Dunn gave up a leadoff single in the eighth and then struck out Eric Hosmer, Jorge Bonifacio and Brandon Moss swinging. "I think the slider has really been effective," Rockies manager Bud Black said of Dunn. "The slider, more than anything, has come back to where it was early in the year. And the times that he throws well, I think the slider is always in play. I think the fastball command is much better, too. I think it's more consistent strikes, the sharpness of the slider, and he's just getting himself in better pitcher's counts. And when you do that consistently you should have success."

LHP Mike Dunn struck out the first two batters he faced but walked the next three before giving way to Jordan Lyles, who ended the ninth. Before going on the 10-day disabled list retroactive to April 23 with back spasms, Dunn made nine straight scoreless appearances to begin the season and allowed one run and three hits in 7 2/3 innings in his first 10 games with three walks and 11 strikeouts. Since being reinstated May 3, Dunn has made 10 appearances totaling seven innings and has allowed 10 hits, eight walks and eight runs with 10 strikeouts.

LHP Mike Dunn still is trying to get back on track since returning from the disabled list on May 3 after being out with back spasms. On Saturday, he allowed three runs in two-thirds of an inning -- all on Scott Schebler's three-run blast -- to earn the loss in a 12-8 defeat at Cincinnati. Rockies manager Bud Black said he spoke with Dunn following the game. "The layoff might have had a little bit to do with it yesterday," said Black. "It might have had an impact on him, whether he was a little bit rusty coming back. He hasnt't gotten back to the consistency he showed early in the year."

LHP Mike Dunn (2-1) allowed three runs in two-thirds of an inning on Saturday -- all on Scott Schebler's three-run blast -- to take the loss for Colorado in a 12-8 defeat in Cincinnati, which rallied from a five-run deficit in the final four innings against a typically steady Rockies bullpen. "Today was a rare occurrence," Rockies manager Bud Black said of the bullpen collapse. "That hasn't happened. They strung some hits together. They crawled back into it with their bats. We helped them a touch with the bases on balls."

LHP Mike Dunn (back spasms) was placed on the 10-day disabled list retroactive to Sunday. Dunn is 2-0 with a 1.17 ERA in 10 games with three walks and 11 strikeouts in 7 2/3 innings. He said while warming up for his last appearance Saturday -- when he gave up his first run of the season -- he felt mid-back spasms for the first time. He said he tried to pitch through it, thinking the spasms would go away but "the back tightened up quite a bit." Dunn took Sunday and Monday off and tried to throw a bulpen Tuesday. "Fastball felt fine, but trying to crank on a slider, the back just kind of locked up a little bit." Dunn underwent an MRI that showed no structural damage. Dunn said he expected to take a couple days off and perhaps start playing catch in Arizona where the Rockies begin a series Friday and then progress to throwing a couple bullpens. He is eligible to be reinstated May 3.
Mon Apr 17 201702:12LHP Mike Dunn has now pitched six scoreless innings this season
LHP Mike Dunn, who got two outs in the eighth inning, has now pitched six scoreless innings this season. Dunn, closer Greg Holland and relievers Scott Oberg, Adam Ottavino and Chris Rusin are contributing to a bullpen renaissance for the Rockies. The five have given up only three earned runs in just under 32 innings this season. A year ago, Colorado had baseball's worst relief staff, with 28 blown saves and a 5.13 ERA.

LHP Mike Dunn, who is 31, has survived six seasons with the Marlins as a middle reliever. Because of that longevity and generally solid production there is a good chance he returns in free agency this winter. He was 6-1 with a 3.40 ERA, and there is also a solid chance that the Marlins will be outbid for his services, leaving them without a proven lefty in their bullpen.

LHP Mike Dunn gave up the game-winning two-run homer to lefty batter James Loney on Friday. Loney hit the first pitch he saw -- a fastball down the middle -- for an upper-deck shot. It was the second straight game in which Dunn was brought in to get a lefty batter and failed to get the job done. Against the Pirates, it was Matt Joyce who had a two-run single off of Dunn.

LHP Mike Dunn (forearm) returned from the disabled list on Tuesday and got his first action of the year on Wednesday. It did not go well for Dunn, who gave up a two-run single to the only batter he faced. Worst of all for Dunn, a lefty, he allowed a lefty pinch-hitter, Matt Joyce to get that hit that tied the score.
