Mon Dec 21 202015:19Bucks lose 2022 2nd-round pick over early Bogdanovic talks
NEW YORK (AP) — The Milwaukee Bucks were docked a 2022 second-round pick after the NBA determined the team held discussions with Bogdan Bogdanovic or his agent before it was allowed under free agency rules. The league said Monday the Bucks’ rule violation constituted “conduct detrimental to the NBA.” Reports surfaced in the days leading to the start of last month’s free agency period that the Bucks had agreed on a sign-and-trade that would have brought Bogdanovic and Justin James to Milwaukee while sending Donte DiVincenzo, D.J. Wilson and Ersan Ilyasova to the Sacramento Kings. The trade fizzled as the NBA announced it was investigating whether the move had been agreed upon earlier than league rules allow. Bogdanovic, a restricted free agent, ended up signing with Atlanta when Sacramento chose to not match the Hawks’ four-year, $72 million offer sheet. Ilyasova was waived, but DiVincenzo and Wilson remain with the Bucks. NBA officials said they took into account several factors in the decision: the Bucks’ cooperation with the investigation; the Bucks ultimately not signing Bogdanovic; and the lack of evidence of an impermissible early agreement on contract terms. "We were fully cooperative with the league and we look forward to our season beginning on Wednesday,” the Bucks said Monday in a statement. ___ More AP NBA: https://apnews.com/NBA and https://twitter.com/AP_Sports

Fri Dec 27 201919:27Giannis Antetokounmpo ruled out because of back soreness
ATLANTA (AP) — Giannis Antetokounmpo sat out the Milwaukee Bucks' game at Atlanta on Friday night because of back soreness.Coach Mike Budenholzer ruled out Antetokounmpo, last season's NBA MVP and the second-leading scorer this season, before league-leading Milwaukee faced the Hawks. “His back is something I guess would be in that category of something we manage and keep our eyes on, and sometimes it flares up," Budenholzer said. “Today it’s enough that he can’t play. But you’re hopeful that it’s not anything significant even though it is something that we kind of monitor on a regular basis."Ersan Ilyasova started in Antetokounmpo's spot. It was too early to tell if Antetokounmpo also will sit out Saturday at Orlando.Antetokounmpo was favoring his back while scoring 18 points and getting 14 rebounds in a loss Wednesday night at Philadelphia, but Budenholzer said the decision to hold out him was mostly precautionary.“Except for that he’s out tonight, I think he’s been doing really well," Budenholzer said. “I think he’s felt good and looked strong just even to kind of to the general eye test."Antetokounmpo has missed one game this season, a home victory over New Orleans on Dec. 11 because of right quad tendon soreness. He is averaging 30.1 points and 12.9 rebounds.Milwaukee leads the NBA with a 27-5 record.___More AP NBA: https://apnews.com/NBA and https://twitter.com/AP_Sports
Sun Oct 13 201922:30Celtics, Zion remain sizzling to start preseason
Preseason numbers often mean almost nothing. Rotations are unusual, starters rarely play much, and few if any teams are putting a premium on winning games. As such, it's tough to glean much from exhibition stats. But what the Boston Celtics and New Orleans rookie Zion Williamson — the No. 1 pick in this year's draft — have been doing so far in the preseason certainly stands out.The Celtics are 3-0 after beating Cleveland on Sunday — and have put together a huge run in all three of those games. The latest was a 50-17 spurt against the Cavaliers, a game that was close for most of the first quarter before Boston built what eventually became a 54-point lead.Boston's other big runs of note in this preseason were a 41-17 stretch last Sunday against Charlotte, and opening the game with a 29-4 burst at Orlando on Friday. On top of the 50-17 run against the Cavs, they added a 26-8 run in the fourth quarter as well.No matter who the Celtics have on the court, defense has been the constant. Boston is... [More]

Tue Jun 25 201921:57Bucks' Horst wins Executive of the Year, heads back to work
MILWAUKEE (AP) — Milwaukee Bucks general manager Jon Horst took a break from his busy schedule Monday night to collect the 2018-19 NBA Executive of the Year Award.Horst won the honor during the league's awards show in Santa Monica, California, four days after he and his staff put a bow on the draft and six days before the anticipated NBA free agency."We congratulate Jon on earning this well-deserved award," Bucks owners Wes Edens, Marc Lasry and Jamie Dinan said in a statement. "Jon has played an instrumental role in building the Bucks into a championship-caliber organization and we are thrilled that his fellow team executives throughout the league recognize his great work."The Bucks' ownership group presented Horst with a multiyear extension earlier this month and for good reason. In his second season as the team's general manager, Horst hired Mike Budenholzer, who was honored as the NBA's Coach of the Year on Monday night, and assembled a team that had the best record in the NBA at 60-22."The... MILWAUKEE (AP) — Giannis Antetokounmpo has carried the Milwaukee Bucks to the Eastern Conference finals for the first time since 2001.The Bucks have reason to believe they can go even further, thanks to a deep roster that received a boost with the return of guard Malcolm Brogdon for the clinching game of their semifinal series win over the Boston Celtics.Brogdon missed the Bucks' first eight playoff games and final 13 regular-season games with a plantar fascia injury in his right foot. He was able to shake off some of the rust as he scored 10 points and played 17 minutes in Milwaukee's 116-91 victory over Boston in Game 5 on Wednesday."It was like he never left," Bucks center Brook Lopez said of Brogdon's long-awaited return. "He just picked everyone up. Our crowd felt it; our team felt it."Now the Bucks will turn their attention to a conference final matchup against either Toronto or Philadelphia. Mon Sep 24 201817:47With new coach and new arena, Giannis, Bucks are all smiles
MILWAUKEE (AP) — Giannis Antetokounmpo was all smiles but had no jokes. The Milwaukee Bucks' All-Star forward was more business this time around: While he didn't indulge reporters by opening his media day session on Monday with a gag, as he had done in previous years, Antetokounmpo still flashed an infectious grin.Things are looking up for the Milwaukee Bucks as they move into a new arena this fall, with a new coach leading a team headlined by one of the NBA's bright, young stars. The organization once had billboards around the city that read "Own the Future." That future is here."You could make an argument that we're number 1, 2, 3, or 4" in the Eastern Conference, co-owner Marc Lasry said when asked about where the Bucks might fit in the conference picture. "I mean I think if we stay healthy and we play to our potential, we'd be one of the top two or three teams, so I think we're there."The Bucks have made slow, steady progress since an ownership group including Lasry bought the team in... Sun Apr 29 201811:1776ers-Celtics Preview Capsule
Capsule for the Philadelphia 76ers-Boston Celtics second-round NBA playoff series that starts Monday:___EASTERN CONFERENCENo. 2 BOSTON CELTICS (55-27, 4-3) vs. No. 3 PHILADELPHIA 76ERS (52-30, 4-1)Season series: Celtics, 3-1.Story line: These teams last met on Jan. 18, and they are a whole lot different now. The Celtics are without Kyrie Irving, and the 76ers have added Marco Belinelli and Ersan Ilyasova — two players who were great for Philadelphia in its first-round win over Miami. Philly has won 20 of its last 21 games, and is playing with incredible confidence. And this series will surely bring back memories of the Celtics-76ers rivalry of years gone past; this is only the third time the franchises have met in the postseason since 1985.How They Got Here: Boston beat No. 7 Milwaukee 4-3, and Philadelphia beat No. 6 Miami 4-1.Key Matchup: Boston coach Brad Stevens vs. Philadelphia coach Brett Brown. The Celtics will have matchup problems with Philadelphia, so it's incumbent on Stevens — who is a brilliant tactician — to be at his scheming best in this matchup. Brown was a calming force in the series against the Heat, not wavering from message even after Philadelphia lost home-court edge in a Game 2 defeat.Prediction: 76ers in 6.___Compiled by AP Basketball Writer Tim Reynolds___More AP NBA: https://apnews.com/tag/NBAbasketball
Thu Apr 26 201813:36Wizards' Lawson among late pickups helping NBA playoff teams
WASHINGTON (AP) — Less than three weeks ago, Ty Lawson was playing professional basketball in China.Nowadays, he's one of the first subs off the bench for the Washington Wizards in their Eastern Conference first-round series against the Toronto Raptors.Lawson is hardly the only player who went from not having a spot on an NBA roster to getting some run, and maybe even filling a key role, during these playoffs. As much as teams develop plans for acquiring talent via the draft, free agency or trades, sometimes a late pickup can become a piece that completes the puzzle."It's not ideal," Wizards coach Scott Brooks said about adding someone on short notice. "It (requires) a lot of work that has to be done in trying to figure it out and try to incorporate him and integrate him into our offense and defensive schemes."With Lawson, though, Brooks added, "It probably is not as much of a disadvantage because he's been in the league, understands the NBA and understands the schemes. A lot of the schemes... [More]

MIAMI (AP) — Philadelphia's six leading average scorers so far in the playoffs, in order are: Ben Simmons, Dario Saric, Joel Embiid, JJ Redick, Marco Belinelli and Ersan Ilyasova.Their homelands: Australia, Croatia, Cameroon, the United States, Italy and Turkey.Philadelphia — a melting pot of humanity for more than 300 years — has a basketball team probably as diverse as the city itself. The 76ers, 19-1 in their last 20 games and suddenly looking very much like an NBA Finals contender, will try to close out the Miami Heat and clinch their Eastern Conference opening series when they play host to Game 5 on Tuesday night.About a dozen languages and dialects can be spoken in the 76ers locker room at any time, but clearly, winning is a universal language."It's all basketball, but the true side of how people coach, speak, say, play the game is different," 76ers coach Brett Brown said. "And that collection now that I have with everybody is like is a melting pot of all peoples experiences. That... [More]
