Tue May 1 201212:15Rockies discussing whether to pursue Cantu
Troy Renck of the Denver Post writes that the Rockies are "internally discussing" whether to pursue Jorge Cantu.
Cantu was recently given his release by the Angels after exercising the opt-out clause in his minor league contract. The 30-year-old played with the Rockies' Triple-A affiliate last year and would likely serve as minor league depth if he returned to the organization.

Angels reassigned INF Jorge Cantu and OF Ryan Langerhans to Triple-A Salt Lake.

Fri Jan 6 201221:07Angels ink INF Jorge Cantu to minors deal
Angels signed INF Jorge Cantu to a minor league contract.
He'll also get a spring training invite. Cantu, who turns 30 later this month, batted just .194/.232/.285 with three homers and 16 RBI over 166 plate appearances with the Padres last season. The Angels have a bit of a logjam with their position players, so he's likely a longshot to make the Opening Day roster.

Tue Jun 21 201116:15Padres release 1B Jorge Cantu
Padres released 1B Jorge Cantu.
It's basically a formality, as Cantu was designated for assignment by the club last week. The 29-year-old batted just .194/.232/.285 with three homers and 16 RBI over 155 plate appearances as a part-time player with the Padres. He has a measly .654 OPS over the past two seasons.

Wed Jun 15 201119:00Padres DFA Jorge Cantu
Padres designated 1B Jorge Cantu for assignment.
It shouldn't come as a big surprise. Since the arrival of top first base prospect Anthony Rizzo, the 29-year-old Cantu has seen very limited playing time. He hit just .194/.232/.285 in 57 games with San Diego.

Wed Jun 8 201121:50Jorge Cantu has rare big night
Jorge Cantu went 2-for-3 with a walk in San Diego's loss to the Rockies on Wednesday.
The walk was Cantu's first since May 3 (23 games), while tonight was the first time all season he reached base three times in a game. It may be the last.

Fri Apr 22 201101:27Padres' Cantu goes hitless in loss
Getting a start against a right-hander, Jorge Cantu went 0-for-4 as the Padres were shut out on Thursday.
Cantu might have a chance to overtake Brad Hawpe and become the Padres' first baseman, but he's struggling himself. The 0-for tonight left him with a .152 average in 46 at-bats, though he does have six RBI. Hawpe, who struck out as a pinch-hitter tonight, is hitting .116 with two RBI in 43 at-bats.

Sun Apr 17 201117:50Cantu doubles RBI total in 8-6 win
Jorge Cantu homered and drove in three runs on Sunday, leading the Padres to an 8-6 victory over the Astros.
The three RBI doubled his season total. Platooning with Brad Hawpe at first base, Cantu is a poor NL-only league option.

Wed Jan 26 201119:37Padres ink Jorge Cantu to one-year contract
Padres signed 1B Jorge Cantu to one-year, $850,000 contract.
At such a low base salary, it's a worthwhile risk for the Padres. Cantu was awful in the second half of the 2010 season, but he still boasts a decent .274/.320/.446 career batting line and he can serve as insurance at first base if Brad Hawpe doesn't pan out. His fantasy value, though, may be zero.
Tue Jan 25 201101:01Cantu's deal with Padres not guaranteed
According to Dan Hayes of the North County Times, Jorge Cantu has a non-guaranteed major league contract with the Padres.
Official terms haven't been disclosed, but Marty Caswell of XX1090 Sports Radio in San Diego is reporting that he could earn a base salary of $850,000 with the club. Given the modest terms of his potential base salary, this is the very definition of a low-risk move.

Mon Jan 24 201123:37Cantu to make $850K with Padres
According to Marty Caswell of XX1090 Sports Radio in San Diego, Jorge Cantu will make an $850,000 base salary with the Padres.
We're guessing there will be some performance-based incentives in there, but this is a pretty worthwhile gamble. Cantu stumbled to a .695 OPS last season, but was a productive player in 2009 and 2008. At the very least, he should be a decent backup for Brad Hawpe at first base and Chase Headley at third base. Still, it's unlikely he'll have much fantasy value outside of deeper NL-only formats.

Mon Jan 24 201122:41Report: Padres agree to deal with Jorge Cantu
According to Ken Rosenthal of FOXSports.com, the Padres have signed Jorge Cantu.
This one came together rather quickly after the Padres were willing to give him a guaranteed major league deal. Cantu, who turns 29 later month, batted just .234 with a .647 OPS against southpaws last season, but his career splits suggest that he's a perfect platoon partner for either Brad Hawpe at first base or Chase Headley at third.

Mon Jan 24 201113:00Pads only interested in minors deal for Cantu
According to Jon Heyman of SI.com, the Padres are only interested in signing Jorge Cantu to a minor league contract.
Cantu hasn't drawn a ton of interest this winter. In fact, the market for him has been rather weak. But with a decent .274/.320/.446 career batting line and the ability to also play third base, he should be able to do slightly better than a minor league contract. Some more suitors could step forward as teams look to add corner infield depth heading into spring camp.

Mon Jan 24 201107:03Braves no longer pursuing Jorge Cantu
According to David O'Brien of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, the Braves are no longer interested in free agent first baseman Jorge Cantu.
Stephen Goff of the Houston Astros Examiner linked the two together on Sunday, but there's nothing to it anymore. The Braves seem committed to handing starting first base duties to Freddie Freeman when the regular season opens and Cantu would only be a distraction from that plan. The 28-year-old Cantu batted just .256/.304/.392 across 515 plate appearances last season. He has also drawn minor interest from the Padres and Indians.

Sun Jan 23 201113:59Report: Padres, Braves leaders for Cantu
The Padres and Braves are potentially the front-runners to land free agent first baseman Jorge Cantu, according to Stephen Goff of the Houston Astros Examiner.
Cantu boasts a .274/.320/.446 batting line over 2,984 at-bats and always found a way to knock in runs during his time in Florida. The 28-year-old has also received interest from Cleveland, while talks with Houston broke down.
