NEW YORK (AP) — For the Mets, July 30 will be a dark day — in a good way. New York will use black jerseys for the first time since 2012 when the Mets play Cincinnati at Citi Field that night. The Mets said Thursday that they will use black jerseys for all remaining Friday night home games this season. The Mets last wore a home black jersey in July 2012, an 8-5 home defeat to the Los Angeles Dodgers that included R.A. Dickey's first relief appearance in 10 years. It was New York's eighth loss in nine games. Memorable Mets games in black jerseys include: Bobby Valentine returning to the dugout with eyeglasses and a fake mustache of eye black following an ejection on June 9, 1999; Robin Ventura's game-ending grand slam single in Game 5 of the NL Championship Series against Atlanta that Oct. 17; and David Wright's first major league home run, against Montreal on July 26, 2004. New York will wear black jerseys on Aug. 13 against the Los Angeles Dodgers, Aug. 27 against Washington, Sept. 10 against the New York Yankees, and Sept. 17 against Philadelphia. ___ More AP MLB: https://apnews.com/hub/MLB and https://twitter.com/AP_Sports

Thu Apr 1 202120:06Lindor: Easy decision to sign $341M, 10-year deal with Mets
NEW YORK (AP) — Francisco Lindor was alone in a Washington, D.C., hotel room Wednesday night when he got the call from agent David Meter: the New York Mets had offered $341 million — $1 million more than Fernando Tatis Jr. got in February. The biggest payday ever for a shortstop. “I wanted to yell," Lindor said Thursday. “I wanted to scream as loud as I could.” Lindor kept his cool — mostly — and told Meter to get it done. The sides agreed to a $341 million, 10-year pact on the eve of opening day, terms that could keep the four-time All-Star in Queens for the rest of his career. The deal kicks in for the 2022 season, meaning Lindor will be 38 when the contract expires. “To the fans of New York, here we go baby!" Lindor said. “Here we go. We have 11 years together. I can't wait.” The Mets acquired Lindor this offseason from the Cleveland Indians, who were unable to negotiate a long-term contract with the face of their franchise. New York nabbed him knowing he could walk as a free agent after... [More]

Thu Apr 1 202100:16AP source: Lindor, Mets agree to $341 million, 10-year deal
NEW YORK (AP) — Francisco Lindor and the New York Mets have agreed to a $341 million, 10-year deal, keeping the All-Star shortstop in Queens for the long haul after acquiring him from Cleveland in the offseason, according to a person familiar with the agreement. The person spoke to The Associated Press on Wednesday night on condition of anonymity because the deal hadn't been announced. Lindor was eligible for free agency after this season and said this spring he wouldn't negotiate with the Mets on a long-term contract after opening day. Less than 24 hours before New York starts its season Thursday night in Washington, an agreement was reached. The 27-year-old Lindor has two Gold Gloves and made four All-Star teams in six seasons with the Indians, hitting .285 with an average of 29 homers, 86 RBIs and 21 stolen bases per 162 games. He was the prized pickup in new owner Steve Cohen's first offseason, acquired from Cleveland along with right-hander Carlos Carrasco for infielders Amed Rosario,... [More]
Mon Jan 11 202114:04Francisco Lindor all smiles after trade from Indians to Mets
NEW YORK (AP) — Francisco Lindor smiled widely for a full 40 minutes, enthralled to join a New York Mets team bulking up under new owner Steven Cohen. “They say it’s probably very contagious,” the Mets' new shortstop said. “I’m living my dream. I’m living the life I always wanted, so I don’t see why not.” Cleveland traded the four-time All-Star to New York along with pitcher Carlos Carrasco on Thursday for infielders Andrés Giménez and Amed Rosario plus a pair of minor league prospects, right-hander Josh Wolf and outfielder Isaiah Greene. “I’m excited to be with the Mets organization. I’m not against a long term. I’m not against it,” Lindor said in a news conference from Florida, wearing his new team’s royal blue cap. “It has to make sense of both sides.” Lindor said he would not want to negotiate once he starts spring training, preferring to focus then on playing and hopefully winning. He earned $6,481,481 prorated from a $17.5 million salary last year, is eligible for arbitration next... [More]

A spring training scuffle. The Sidd Finch prank. Shea Stadium turned into a staging area for Ground Zero recovery efforts after 9/11.What many people around the Mets all those years didn’t know was how the omnipresent Horwitz saw it: with a glass right eye.Diagnosed with glaucoma soon after he was born, Horwitz was blind on that side.“Something I’ve never made public before,” Horwitz wrote in his recently released memoir published by Triumph Books.“Mr. Met: How a Sports-Mad Kid from Jersey Became Like Family to Generations of Big Leaguers,” with a foreward by Mets two-time Cy Young Award winner Jacob deGrom, covers plenty of All-Stars who played for New York: Tom Seaver, Gary Carter, Keith Hernandez and David Wright, among them.Horwitz, who turns 75 next month, recounts his own path to Queens,... Pollock. Those four players received $62 million in signing bonuses during 2019 that are prorated over the length of each contract in the calculation of the average.
