Wed Jul 14 202120:50Angels sign veteran OF Adam Eaton after White Sox release
ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — The Los Angeles Angels signed veteran outfielder Adam Eaton two days after he was released by the Chicago White Sox. The Angels announced the move Wednesday. They also designated left-hander Dillon Peters for assignment to clear a spot on the 40-man roster. The White Sox designated Eaton for assignment July 7 after he batted .201 with five homers and 28 RBIs in 58 games during his return season with Chicago. After a strong start to the year, his production slumped badly from mid-April onward. The 10-year major league veteran also struggled at the plate with the Washington Nationals in 2020, a year after playing well and winning a World Series ring with new Angels teammate Anthony Rendon. Eaton is a career .278 hitter with 65 homers and 317 RBIs across a decade with Arizona, Washington and two stints with the White Sox. Eaton will provide immediate depth in the Angels' injury-plagued outfield. Left fielder Justin Upton has been out since June 22 with a lower back injury,... [More]

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — Shohei Ohtani hit his major league-leading 31st homer in the third, and Juan Lagares ended it with a two-run double in the ninth inning of the Los Angeles Angels’ 6-5 comeback victory over the Baltimore Orioles on Sunday. Cedric Mullins hit a tiebreaking homer for Baltimore in the ninth in his first game after making his first All-Star team, but the Angels jumped all over Cole Sulser (2-1) without making an out in the bottom half. After Los Angeles loaded the bases on a walk and two short singles, Lagares doubled to the gap in right-center, extending the Angels’ winning streak to five games. Raisel Iglesias (6-3) got the win. Ohtani tied the MLB record for the most homers in a season by a Japanese-born player when he blasted a 459-foot solo shot off Thomas Eshelman to straightaway center. It was his 14th homer in 17 games overall. Less than an hour later, Ohtani became the first player in major league history to be picked for an All-Star Game as both a hitter and... [More]

Ramírez drove in a run off Dean Kremer (0-6) in the first inning when Baltimore left fielder DJ Stewart slipped in the wet grass going after a routine fly. Indians rookie reliever Nick Sandlin (1-0) picked up his first career win by striking out three of the five batters he faced. Emmanuel Clase worked a 1-2-3 ninth for his 10th save. Mon Jun 7 202121:05Angels star Trout doesn't have timetable for return
ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — Mike Trout says his right calf is starting to feel better, but the Los Angeles Angels superstar still doesn't know when he will be able to return. The time-time AL MVP went on the injured list on May 18 after straining his calf the night before against the Cleveland Indians. The Angels said at the time that Trout would miss six to eight weeks, which would sideline him through the All-Star break. “Today was probably my best day yet, just tolerance-wise. As far as activities, I’m doing as much as I can to strengthen around the calf muscle,” Trout said before Monday's game against the Kansas City Royals. Trout said he would like to start jogging soon but doesn't have a timetable on when he would be able to do that, much less resume baseball activities. He said he is walking on a treadmill but not with any intensity. “I’m happy with my progress so far. It has been good the last couple of days,” he said. “I should have a better idea on a return date once I start moving... [More]

Tue May 18 202122:19Angels star Mike Trout out 6 to 8 weeks due to calf strain
ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — Mike Trout instantly figured something was wrong. And the Angels star was right — he's now out for the longest stretch of his major league career because of a strained right calf. The three-time AL MVP is expected to miss six to eight weeks, which would sideline the Los Angeles outfielder through the All-Star break. “It is not just a little bump in the road. I mean, I’m really crushed about it,” Trout said Tuesday. The Angels put Trout on the injured list, a day after he came up limping when he headed toward third base on a popup that ended the first inning. Trout said when he put his head down to run, he thought he'd been hit by a line drive. “I knew it was bad when it happened. I felt the pop and was just hoping for the best,” Trout said. “I wanted to make sure it wasn't my Achilles. So I guess if there’s any positive that comes out of this, at least it wasn't that. It was just a freak thing.” Trout slammed down his batting helmet as he exited the field, an injury... [More]
Tue May 18 202101:38Angels star Trout leaves game due to right calf strain
ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — Los Angeles Angels star Mike Trout exited Monday night's game against Cleveland after the first inning because of a strained right calf. The outfielder was limping after running to third on an inning-ending popup. Los Angeles manager Joe Maddon said after his team's 7-4 victory that Trout was undergoing further evaluation, including an MRI, and the Angels will know more on Tuesday. “I saw nothing. I looked up and he was limping to the third base bag,” Maddon said. “It was kind of innocuous and I had no idea why. It was hurting him pretty good.” The three-time MVP entered the day sixth in the American League with a .333 batting average, but was 1 for 17 in his past six games. He snapped a five-game hitless streak Sunday at Boston, which was one game shy of the longest of his career. Trout has missed at least 22 games the last three years there has been a full season. He missed no more than five in each of his first four full seasons in the majors. Juan Lagares moved to center field after Trout was removed, and Jose Rojas entered the game in left. ___ More AP MLB: https://apnews.com/hub/MLB and https://twitter.com/AP_Sports

Sun Apr 11 202114:05Angels OF Fowler needs season-ending surgery for torn ACL
DUNEDIN, Fla. (AP) — Los Angeles Angels outfielder Dexter Fowler has a torn ACL in his left knee that requires season-ending surgery. A date for the procedure has not been set. Recovery time is expected to be six to nine months. “Comeback season has commenced,” Fowler said Sunday. “The cards I've been dealt, so you've got to deal with them and go at it like that.” Fowler was hurt when he took an awkward step on second base in Friday night’s game against Toronto. At first he thought he was hit by a thrown ball. The Angels initially thought Fowler had avoided a serious injury but an MRI exam on Saturday found the tear. “The preliminary tests were fine,” Fowler said. “Thought the ACL and everything was fine, and then woke up the next morning and it was kind of sore. ... Went and got an MRI and the doc told me that I tore my ACL and my medial meniscus and strained my MCL.” Fowler doesn't think the injury is career-ending. “I want to continue to play,” the 35-year-old said. “I think I've still... Mon Mar 29 202100:25Mad Bum gets opener for D-backs; Kluber is Yanks' No. 2
The Arizona Diamondbacks are ready to open the season in familiar fashion: with Mad Bum on the mound. Madison Bumgarner was tabbed by manager Torey Lovullo to make his second straight opening day start for the Diamondbacks on Thursday at San Diego. The 31-year-old four-time All-Star struggled last season — his first in Arizona — going 1-4 with a 6.48 ERA. He was 2-1 with a 6.35 ERA in three spring starts, including allowing six earned runs against Cincinnati on Friday. But Bumgarner, who signed a five-year, $85 million contract before last season, will still lead off a Diamondbacks rotation that includes Merrill Kelly, Caleb Smith, Taylor Widener and Luke Weaver. This will be the seventh opening day start in Bumgarner's career after doing so five times with San Francisco. The Yankees also are setting their rotation, announcing Sunday that Corey Kluber will follow ace Gerrit Cole against Toronto. Kluber, who signed a one-year, $11 million contract with New York, has thrown one inning in... [More]
Fri Mar 26 202113:54Los Angeles Angels release veterans Jon Jay, Jesse Chavez
TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) — The Los Angeles Angels have released outfielder Jon Jay and right-hander Jesse Chavez. The Angels made the moves Friday as they trim their roster for opening day. Jay and Chavez both signed minor league deals with invitations to big spring training last month. The 36-year-old Jay batted 2 for 29 in 15 spring training games, while the 37-year-old Chavez had a 14.54 ERA in five appearances. Jay was attempting to make the roster of his seventh big league team, but his departure means Juan Lagares is increasingly likely to make the Angels' opening day roster as a backup outfielder. Lagares is batting .378 in his first spring training with the Halos, who signed the former Gold Glove winner last month after the Mets dropped him. Jay would have received a deal paying $1 million in the majors had he been added to the 40-man roster and Chavez $750,000. The Angels will be back in Anaheim on Sunday night for the first of three exhibition games against the Dodgers. They host the Chicago White Sox on opening day Thursday. ___ More AP MLB: https://apnews.com/hub/MLB and https://twitter.com/AP_Sports

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — The Los Angeles Angels have signed outfielder Juan Lagares and utilityman Phil Gosselin to minor league deals with invitations to spring training. Lagares spent most of the past eight seasons with the New York Mets, batting .254 with 25 homers and 179 RBIs. He appeared in just 165 games over the past three seasons in New York, and he didn't record a plate appearance in the pandemic-shortened 2020 season before being designated for assignment in August. Lagares won a Gold Glove in 2014, and he remains a strong fielder who can play all three outfield spots. He made the all-tournament team this month in the Caribbean Series while playing for his native Dominican Republic's Águilas Cibaeñas. Lagares is expected to compete with Taylor Ward, Scott Schebler, Jo Adell and Brandon Marsh for a job as a backup outfielder with the Angels. NEW YORK (AP) — New York Mets hitting coach Chili Davis hasn’t decided if he will rejoin the team at any point this season because of concerns about the coronavirus. The 60-year-old Davis has been working remotely from his Arizona home during the pandemic, doing his best to help Mets hitters throughout their summer training camp in New York this month.
