Tanaka struck out eight and allowed just Andrelton Simmons' sixth-inning home run in his longest outing in nearly a month.Pitching on his 30th birthday, Angels right-hander Garrett Richards (4-4) allowed three runs over 2 1/3 innings and matched a season high with five walks.Aroldis Chapman walked Ohtani to begin the ninth, but struck out a pair to earn his 10th save in 11 chances.BRAVES 7, RED SOX 1BOSTON (AP) — Prized rookie Ronald Acuna Jr. took a high-flying tumble while beating out an infield hit, exiting... KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Eric Thames earned a reputation as a workout warrior during his days playing professionally in South Korea, where he cultivated the prodigious power that served him so well last season with the Brewers.Well, his leg muscles are going to be pretty strong in a couple months.Thames joked Wednesday that he won't be able to exercise much else after an MRI exam revealed that he had torn the ulnar collateral ligament in his left thumb. The first baseman will head back to Milwaukee after his team wraps up its two-game set in Kansas City and be examined by team doctors, then likely schedule surgery in the hopes of returning for the second half of the season."Personally I feel like I let everybody down, but it's nothing I can control," said Thames, who was hitting .250 and second in the National League with seven homers. "I saw on (television) that I'll be out six to eight weeks, so I guess that's what it is. It all depends on when the surgery is."The Royals recalled right-hander... [More]

Thu Mar 22 201820:38Brewers say Logan, Miley to miss opening day with injuries
PHOENIX (AP) — The Milwaukee Brewers say injured left-handers Boone Logan and Wade Miley won't be ready to pitch opening day.Logan will start the season on the disabled list after an MRI revealed a left triceps strain, Milwaukee said Thursday. The reliever threw only three pitches in the seventh inning of a game Wednesday before leaving with discomfort. Logan was 1-0 with a 4.71 ERA in 38 appearances with Cleveland last season.Miley was also injured Wednesday, exiting his start in the fifth inning after trying to field a bunt. The team says an MRI showed a slight muscle tear in his left groin that will keep him from throwing for two weeks. The 31-year-old has been competing for a spot in Milwaukee's rotation.Miley is in camp on a minor league contract and has an opt-out clause for Thursday. If he requests his release, Milwaukee has 72 hours to either let him go or add him to the 40-man roster. He would have to be on the 40-man to be placed on the disabled list. If Milwaukee puts him on the major league roster, he would earn $2.5 million on a one-year deal with up to $3.2 million in performance bonuses.___More MLB baseball: https://apnews.com/tag/MLBbaseball
Thu Mar 22 201815:08Lorenzo Cain, Christian Yelich boost Brewers with glove, bat
MILWAUKEE (AP) — The Milwaukee Brewers' pitching could improve this year better because of two new bats in the lineup: Outfielders Lorenzo Cain and Christian Yelich are just as capable of changing games with their gloves, too.Think fewer bloopers dropping in for hits, or a hard liner into the gap cut off in time to prevent extra bases. Any edge will help the Brewers in what should be a competitive race in the NL Central."We had a great outfield before; I know I benefited from it, too," starter Zach Davies said. "But it's shoring up spots that the front office wanted to. Both guys are great defensively."The offseason acquisitions are each Gold Glove-winning outfielders, in fact. Yelich arrived in a deal with the Miami Marlins on Jan. 25, one day before the Brewers signed former farmhand Cain as a free agent from the Kansas City Royals. The additions led to speculation that Milwaukee might deal one of their quality outfielders to bring in another starter, especially with Jimmy Nelson expected...
